Franklin Helps to Create Bright Futures!
Last week Franklin was a sea of bright colours during a mufti day that was held to
raise money for the Songs for Sam Scholarship, which aims to support the future of
the Tumut community by encouraging and empowering local people to follow their
dreams. Miss Page and the SRC would like to thank all those that supported this
worthy cause!
Strengthening our Knowledge in Numeracy!
Teachers at Franklin have been developing
their learning this year in Numeracy, Learning
new ways to strengthen the skills of our
students. This year we have introduced a
variety of new things into our mathematics
program. Teachers are using “talk moves” to
support classroom discussion in mathematics,
“number talks” to provide students the
opportunity to explore and share their
understandings in number, and “problem
solving” developing a variety of strategies to help students to explore and solve
problems. Teachers have been using “How To Learn strategies” to support students
learning through the concept of having a “Sweaty Brain”, understanding that learning
is about challenges and if we don’t challenge our brain we won’t develop our brain.
The term “Sweaty Brain” is used in reference to making our brain work. Recently our
Building Numeracy team attended an end of year sharing session where our team was
acknowledged for their outstanding gains in the area of mathematics.
CELEBRATING FRANKLIN!
TOGETHER WE LEARN
Franklin Public School is now enrolling for 2019!
Hands-on Learning at Franklin!
Mathematics Students are being involved in many hands-on activities during math lessons. By utilising manipulatives during lessons students are better able to visualise math concepts. When students use manipulatives they create, represent, organise, record and communicate their mathematical thinking and begin to develop a positive attitude towards maths and take ownership of their own learning. Students are more engaged and focused when they're working on hands-on projects. They collaborate and problem solve and develop effective team work skills.
L3
All students from Kindergarten to Year Two keenly participate in the L3 Program (Language, Learning and Literacy),
which encourages students to become self-regulated as they embark on daily challenges within a quality teaching
and learning environment. The K-2 classes demonstrate explicit teaching, language opportunities, shared
experiences, problem solving and ultimately personal success.
STEM STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM lessons involve a combination of skills and knowledge from all these areas. STEM encourages students to be problem solvers. It develops science concepts, involves critical and creative thinking, it applies maths skills and knowledge, uses and investigates technology and it also encourages innovation. STEM requires students to be reflective and resilient with their learning. It allows for collaboration and co-operation. The students in Bass really enjoy STEM activities because they are fun, interesting and completely ‘hands-on’. They get to use a variety of materials, including many recycled items, to design and make their projects. They are required to digitally record and write a report on their project before giving an oral presentation to the class.

Chisholm
in Action!
From the library
This term Stage One children have been learning about mini beasts and habitats. We have been learning how to find the information we need using non-fiction books and computers in the library. During our class visits to the library we have been collecting items from our natural environment and using them to create our own habitat. How impressive it is!
Billie, Bobbie-Lee and Rhiannan working on our habitat project and Aiden and Miley enjoying creating the bush habitat.
