SINGING BETWEEN THE HANDSA Journey Among the Ismaelits of Hindukush by Martino Nicoletti

Size: 14 x 21 cmNumber of pages: 190Illustrations: b/w photographsPaperback

Born during a long author’s journey under the protection of an armed escort in themountain region of Hindukush, between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the book offersan unprecedented insight into the spiritual life and the universe of the Ismailits, oneof the most fascinating and controversial Shiite Islam groups, today in direct strug-gle with the Taliban threat. For centuries the West has considered them wrapped inan aura of mystery and terror, linked to legendary and dark figures such as their cha-rismatic leader, «the Old Man of the Mountain», and his dreadful «Assassins» – war-riors consacreted to martyrdom. Ismailits are a rich and complex religious minority, characterized by an unquestioned faith in the person of the Imam – the Prophet's ear-thly representative and depositary of the esoteric interpretation of the Qur’an – anda strong mystical vocation, aimed at a tangible and intimate union between the belie-ver and the divine. The high quality of Nicoletti’s writing is also reflected in the sug-gestions of the black and white photographs made with vintage cameras, turning apersonal diary into a document with a broader meaning: a statement of the beautyand depth of the encounter between different cultures and the complexity that everygenuine dialogue between worlds, as always, reserves.

Martino Nicoletti, orientalist, writer and multimedia artist, has been working formore than two decades in Asia, a continent where he has also traveled and lived.Author of literary and photographic essays, he lives between Paris and England, where he is Senior Lecturer in Art at the University of Derby.

LOVE, ALWAYSThe Meaning of Life in the Stories of the Sickby Attilio Stajano

Size: 14 x 21 cmNumber of pages: 168Illustrations: NoPaperbackSOLD IN FRANCE

FRENCH AND ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS AVAILABLE

The experience of terminal illness is a challenge full of meaning for contemporarysociety, and it can and should measure its ability to welcome, support and help peo-ple, even when their life is coming to an end. But what happens in the places wherepatients spend the last days or the last weeks of their lives? What stories intertwine, what dialogues are born, what feelings grow? The stories collected by Attilio Stajanoreflect very different events and situations, but have one common trait: in the end, when gestures and words fatally begin to fade, only love remains. Patiently and sen-sitively listening to those who are leaving us can teach us a lot about the deeper mea-ning of life and death. Above all, it teaches us to live better, until the end.

Attilio Stajano works as a volunteer in a hospital in Brussels. He has been an indu-strial researcher, director of research programs at the European Commission andUniversity Professor at Georgia Tech and in Bologna.

THE RED ATLANTISThe End of Communism in Europeby Luigi Geninazzi, with a foreword by Lech Walesa

Size: 14 x 21 cmNumber of pages: 288Illustrations: 12 b/wPaperbackSOLD IN POLAND

Once upon a time there was «the Eastern Europe», a world that in the collective ima-gination has disappeared in just one night along with the fall of the Berlin Wall onNovember the 9th 1989. Gone, like the mythical Atlantis. In fact, the end of commu-nism has come after long years of suffering and nonviolent struggles conducted bythousands of citizens, in more or less organized forms, with great hardship and sacri-fice. The Author, Luigi Geninazzi, lived all that in first person, as a special correspon-dent on the field, from Gdansk and Warsaw to Moscow, from Prague to Vilnius, fromBerlin to Bucharest. In this book the author recalls his experience by sliding underour eyes large and small events of daily life, anecdotes, important historical figures –as John Paul II, Lech Walesa, Vaclav Havel – such as well as ordinary anonymouspeople, brave and fearless. The result is a passionate chronicle of a crucial decade ofthe twentieth century, which marked the passage – very complex, difficult and fullof shadows and half-truths – from the time of the opposite blocs up to contempora-ry Europe.

Luigi Geninazzi, journalist and writer, is an expert of international politics. For theweekly magazine «Il Sabato» and the newspaper «Avvenire» he has followed eventsin many areas of the world, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe. He receivedmany awards and won the prize «Europe for Journalism» in 1990. For his articles onSolidarnosc he got in 1995 the Cross of Grand Officer of the Republic of Poland, oneof the highest honors awarded by the Government of Warsaw to a foreigner.

COSMIC SOMERSAULTFrom Here to Eternity (and Back) Hand in Hand With Dante and Chestertonby Annalisa Teggi

Size: 14 x 21 cmNumber of pages: 152Illustrations: NoPaperback

It is thought that the Divine Comedy begins with a man lost in a forest; in fact, the manwas found and this is the only reason why the story of his journey begins. A paradoxi-cal point of view is a surprising weapon in life and in literature, and it is what links thewriters so far away in history like the medieval Dante and the modern Chesterton. They both put heaven and earth upside-down, just to give us a look of wonder on rea-lity. Following them, walking between chronicle and literature, entails the risk of livinga strange day, in which the dawn talks about fatigue and tiredness, the afternoonunchains heroic adventures and the sunset brings an unexpected joy!

Annalisa Teggi has a PhD in Comparative Literature and in 2009 she translated andedited a new edition of Dante’s Epistle to Cangrande. She is a translator of prose andpoetry from the English language, and in particular of the works of Gilbert KeithChesterton.

GIANNI VERSACEThe Biographyby Tony Di Corcia

Size: 14 x 21 cmNumber of pages: 288Illustrations: 32 col. PaperbackSOLD IN POLAND

Gianni Versace’s life was both fabulous and tragic. It is the fairytale of a Calabrianyoung boy – whose mother was a dressmaker – who fell in love with fashion, becomingone of the most famous and successful Italian fashion designers: from a child crawlingon lace and trims to the designer of Princess Diana’s and Madonna’s dresses (just tomention two examples), he also designed costumes for the theatre and for a number ofBéjart’s ballets. Tragic was his murder in Miami Beach, which surprised the entire worldand remains unexplained to this day. Shy, reserved, and designer of seductive andeccentric fashion at the same time, Gianni Versace was a man of contrasts: innovator, provoker, and an expert in sartorial tradition; cosmopolitan and very much attached tohis Italian origins; skilled businessman and «avant-garde» artist. Fifteen years after hisdeath, this final biography highlights all his life stages and artistic career steps: from hisapprenticeship, helping his mother, to his first important collaborations, from the foun-dation of his international fashion house to his tragic and mysterious death. The story of Versace’s life is enriched with first person accounts by personalitiesfrom the world of fashion, culture and entertainment who were close to him; itrecalls one of the most brilliant Italians of the last fifty years, who was the protago-nist of a unique adventure.

The latest discoveries of science around the three Big Bangs that brought the worldto be as its (the birth ot the universe, the emergence of life on Earth, the emergenceof man) are, in Straffellini’s opinion, the lights of rationality that illuminate the pathto God. It could be said – paraphrasing Bacon – that while «a little science bringsmen’s minfs to atheism, a lof science brigs the back to faith». According to the author, the spiritual dimension of our existence is indeed not separated from rationality andfrom their inner dooubts but it is, instead, fed by tehm. Straffellini’s book is a passio-nate reflection on the mystery that surrounds us and aspires to be a «manifesto» foranyone who is on a journey towards faith combined to reason.

Giovanni Straffellini is Professor of Metallurgy at the University of Trento. He is theauthor of more than a hundred papers published in scientific journals, as well asbooks and handbooks. He has been working for years eith the Diocesi of Trento forthe initiative «The Chair of Confrontation» between believers and atheist.

PATHS OF BEAUTYFor a Theological Aesthetics

by Umberto Casale

Size: 14 x 21 cmNumber of pages: 352Illustrations: NoPaperback

«Christianity is the overflowing and never-overcome principle of every aesthetics. It isthe aesthetic religion par excellence» wrote Hans Urs von Balthasar. The theologicalrelevance of beauty, however, is like an underground river, which shows and hides her-self throughout the course of the Christian history. In this wide-ranging and in-depth study Umberto Casale approachs this subject by fol-lowing three different routes. The first one is devoted to the ancient Greek philosophy(Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus), which has produced reflections on beauty great intensity andcharm. The second analyzes the biblical tradition (the old and new Testament): the Bibleis indeed a real «aesthetic code» which has inspired architecture, painting, sculpture, music in every age. The third goes through the theological tradition (Eastern andWestern) from the Patristic to the Middle Age, from modernity to contemporary, through the authors who spoke about the Saving Beauty, the glory of God shining onthe face of Christ: Augustine, Dionysius the Areopagite, Thomas Aquinas, Kierkegaard,Dostoevsky, Florensky, Balthasar and Ratzinger. At the end of the analysis it is evidenthow the via pulchritudinis (the way of Beauty) and the via veritatis (the way of Truth) con-verge in the same way, via amoris (The way of Love).

Umberto Casale is a Professor of Fundamental theology at the Thaology Faculty ofTurin and is a member of the ATI (Italian Theological Association ). He has publishedhundreds of articles and around 20 theological and philosophical books.

Don Bosco, The MysticA Life Between Heaven and Earthby Cristina Siccardi

Size: 14 x 21 cmNumber of pages: 408Illustrations: NoPaperbackSOLD IN BRASIL

Don Bosco is one of the most famous but also most misunderstood Saints in theChurch history. Although certainly there is no shortage of books about him, rarelyhis person and, above all, his spirituality are presented in a deep and complete waylike this. As Cristina Siccardi shows drawing on the rich primitive sources – the mostreliable of all – he was continually visited by the Divine, because it asked him to crea-te a great project in which the supernatural and natural touch would led the «badboys» to become «honest citizens and good Christians» (in the sense that the bookreveals at best). What emerges from these pages is thus not the «Social Saint» ideo-logically set, not the «Manager» so popular in the 70s and 80s, nor the precursor ofmodern psychology, nor of the Second Vatican Council, but a man made of heavenand charity, who worked to establish the Kingdom of God on earth. An extraordina-ry priest who fought tirelessly, following the guidelines of Tradition and using thetools of the dialectic and the press, against mistakes and heresies, against liberalismand Freemasonry, defending with courage, passion and determination the Catholicfaith and his Church.

Cristina Siccardi is a journalist and writer. She writes for several cultural and reli-gious magazines. She is founder of CESCOR (Centre for Historical Studies on theCounter-Revolution).

Size: 14 x 21 cmNumber of pages: 272Illustrations: NoPaperback

The apparitions of the Holy Mary offer many opportunities for a theological and spi-ritual reflection, as we can see in them the divine pedagogy which, through the per-son and the words of Mary, draws everyone towards Jesus Christ, Savior of theworld. By reading the recall of the various Marian apparitions by Daniela DelGaudio, the reader may meditate on how concretely the Virgin calls every man toopen his heart to the love of God, manifested on the Earth by the Son, be encouragedto listen to Him, as she did at Cana in Galilee, and to do whatever he tells us andtransform our lives according to His plan of salvation. This book will help us, moreo-ver, to understand how Mary enters into dialogue with all peoples and cultures –taking expressions, symbols, traits specific to each nation.

Daniela Del Gaudio belongs to the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of theImmaculate. She is Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical UrbanUniversity ISCSM and at the Theological College of Benevento, affiliated with thePontifical University Antonianum.

ENQUIRY ON CHRISTIANITYHow Civilization Has Been Builtby Francesco Agnoli

Size: 14 x 21 cmNumber of pages: 220Illustrations: NoPaperback

Catholics know too little of the history of their Church. It is a serious ignorance, which has among its consequences the undermining of a fruitful comparison withthe non-believers, who do not find in the believers informed interlocutors. What didthe advent of Christianity in history mean? To understand it, it is good to make acomparison between the first pagan world and Christianity. You might notice thatthe Incarnation of Christ was an extraordinary event not only for those who believe, but it has had an impact on the lives of peoples and individuals in general.Christianity, in fact, freed man from ancient superstitions, it introduced the idea offreedom and equality and changed the way we look at poor and sick people, womenand children. The new religion has fostered the birth of schools, universities andhospitals and the emergence of modern science, offering a full humanism and uni-versal solidarity, compassion and dialogue. Christianity is a social, political and cul-tural revolution and it is still in progress….

Francesco Agnoli is an historian. He writes for newspapers and magazines. Hepublished many books on the History of Religion and Christianity.
