Essential Question: “ How can the choice of media

influence the outcome of a work of art?”

•From the initial line drawings, students will develop a printing plate and an edition of prints.

•Finally, students will create a line drawing using Photoshop Elements and explore the impact of technology on drawing and creating multiple images.

•Students will compare and contrast the impact of methods used as the way they change the appearance of the same theme

Phase 1 - Modified Contour Drawing

“How can the way an artist chooses to use line affect the outcome of the image?”

• *Review linear qualities from last class.

• Discuss Van Gogh via PowerPoint presentation.

• Use interactive site http://www.metmuseum.org/explore/justforfun.asp(How Van Gogh Made His Mark)

• Print out linear example.

Modified Contour Drawing

• Review Van Gogh and his use of expressive lines.• Introduce Modified Contour Drawing, demonstrate methods.• Discuss concept of Variety.• Practice drawing multiple sizes and views. Use live

sunflowers in season if possible.

• Create final composition demonstrating variety.

Phase 2 - Printmaking“What are the differences between printmaking and drawing?”

• Present video on basic printmaking (reduction prints)

• Demonstrate transfer methods.

• Demonstrate safe carving methods.

• Create printing plate.• Demonstrate how to pull

prints and create reduction plates.

• Create a series of two color prints.

Phase 3 - Computer Graphics“By using a computer program, how can I alter my original

drawing and change the impact to the viewer? In what ways have I altered the message or appearance of my

original art work?”

• Introduce students to Photoshop Elements.

• Create tracing on acetate of original contour drawing.

• Demonstrate how to “draw” with the mouse and use tools to fill in color areas.

• Demonstrate how to save files.

• Print final image.
