- Written by the Irish author Frank McCourt
- Originally published in 1996
- It won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography
- Frank describes the overview of his miserable life as he lives in poverty with odd parents
- He also talks about a disease (Typhoid Fever) spreading throughout the town
- Frank then talks about his parents history before they gave birth to his siblings and he
- Malachy McCourt, Frank’s father, used to work for the IRA and thus committed a crime which put his life on a death sentence, He ran away to the U.S. to avoid being executed
- He brought along his regular drinking habits to slowly kill himself
- Angela Sheehan, the mother of Frank, was a woman who grew up in the slums and her father ran away after leaving her with a child
- Angela then travels to the U.S. to visit Malachy who is in jail service for 3 months, they then get married and give birth Frank
- The family lived in poverty, they were broke and dwelled in slums due to their low income
- For the most part, Frank enjoys his childhood, he has good memories with his dad
- Malachy continuously drinks and spends most of the family’s money in a bar causing a lot of hunger between the different members, he thus loses many jobs
- Margaret, one of Frank’s sisters temporarily stops Frank from drinking but soon dies of the disease
- Angela and Malachy leave the family due to the great depression
