Frank Lowy’s incredible impactJOSHUA LEVI
FRANK Lowy doesn’t need an intro-duction because he is one of the mostrecognisable businessmen inAustralia, particularly in the Jewishcommunity.
Since migrating to Australia in1952, he has built a commercialempire that now has more than 100shopping centres across the world, transformed football in Australia, and has been one of the country’sbiggest philanthropists for more thana decade.
Next month his legacy will be hon-oured with his induction into theMaccabi NSW Hall of Fame as one ofAustralia’s top sporting administrators.
Maccabi NSW president MaxFuteran said Lowy’s involvement withMaccabi started so long ago that mostof the club’s members were not evenborn when it began.
“Most people will think that FrankLowy’s induction into the MaccabiJewish Hall of Fame relates solely tothe enormous contribution he hasmade to Australian sporting life ashead of the FFA [Football FederationAustralia],” Futeran told The AJN.
“Many though will remember hispivotal role in the establishment andrunning of the Hakoah Club andassociated football teams [Hakoahand Sydney City Football Club] andhis support and efforts in establishingthe original Maccabi Tennis Clubin Wellington Street.
“I am sure most would not knowthat Frank represented Australia
at Masters Tennis at the 1993Maccabiah. Frank and the Lowy fam-ily continue to be strong supportersof Maccabi.”
Maccabi Australia chairman BarrySmorgon said Lowy’s contribution to
Maccabi mustn’t be underestimated.“Frank’s acknowledgement is for
his contribution for sport overall and, obviously Football Federationrestructure being a prime one, notjust for his assistance with Maccabi,”
Smorgon said. “He, and the family, have been major supporters ofMaccabi for many years.
“He has attended at least twoMaccabiah Games, his sons Stevenand Peter have both been twice andhis contribution, in my view, to thebetterment of Jewish sport hasbeen invaluable.”
The Maccabi NSW Hall of Fame gala event is on Sunday, November 11.
To attend call (02) 9331 0573.

The 18-year-old won the silvermedal in the K1 slalom event at the2012 London Olympics, as well aspreviously picking up gold at the2010 Youth Olympic Games inSingapore and bronze at the 2010World Championships in Slovenia.
“Jess’s medal was very impor-tant and she’s young and done verywell,” Myriam said.

But Fox has some strong compe-tition, with gold medallists SallyPearson and Anna Meares, as well asmultiple Paralympic gold medal win-ner Jacqueline Freney, also up for theaward.
