Well, 3 transactions later, it’s a no brainer especially when my time & negotiation skills are not in the same league. Regards, Mark Frank Lowy’s incredible impact JOSHUA LEVI FRANK Lowy doesn’t need an intro- duction because he is one of the most recognisable businessmen in Australia, particularly in the Jewish community. Since migrating to Australia in 1952, he has built a commercial empire that now has more than 100 shopping centres across the world, transformed football in Australia, and has been one of the country’s biggest philanthropists for more than a decade. Next month his legacy will be hon- oured with his induction into the Maccabi NSW Hall of Fame as one of Australia’s top sporting administrators. Maccabi NSW president Max Futeran said Lowy’s involvement with Maccabi started so long ago that most of the club’s members were not even born when it began. “Most people will think that Frank Lowy’s induction into the Maccabi Jewish Hall of Fame relates solely to the enormous contribution he has made to Australian sporting life as head of the FFA [Football Federation Australia],” Futeran told The AJN. “Many though will remember his pivotal role in the establishment and running of the Hakoah Club and associated football teams [Hakoah and Sydney City Football Club] and his support and efforts in establishing the original Maccabi Tennis Club in Wellington Street. “I am sure most would not know that Frank represented Australia at Masters Tennis at the 1993 Maccabiah. Frank and the Lowy fam- ily continue to be strong supporters of Maccabi.” Maccabi Australia chairman Barry Smorgon said Lowy’s contribution to Maccabi mustn’t be underestimated. “Frank’s acknowledgement is for his contribution for sport overall and, obviously Football Federation restructure being a prime one, not just for his assistance with Maccabi,” Smorgon said. “He, and the family, have been major supporters of Maccabi for many years. “He has attended at least two Maccabiah Games, his sons Steven and Peter have both been twice and his contribution, in my view, to the betterment of Jewish sport has been invaluable.” The Maccabi NSW Hall of Fame gala event is on Sunday, November 11. To attend call (02) 9331 0573. Fox in running for The Don ASHLEY SHENKER AUSTRALIAN Jewish Olympic silver medallist Jessica Fox is in the run- ning to win one of the country’s top sport prizes – the Sport Australia Hall of Fame’s The Don Award. “We found out a few weeks ago and we’re very proud,” Fox's mother Myriam told The AJN. “She's really honoured. When we received the letter we both said ‘wow’ because it was great.” Named after the great cricket player Sir Donald Bradman, the award honours an Australian athlete whose achievement has inspired the nation. The 18-year-old won the silver medal in the K1 slalom event at the 2012 London Olympics, as well as previously picking up gold at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and bronze at the 2010 World Championships in Slovenia. “Jess’s medal was very impor- tant and she’s young and done very well,” Myriam said. “She is inspiring people her age and that's the strength of being enthusiastic and giving happiness.” But Fox has some strong compe- tition, with gold medallists Sally Pearson and Anna Meares, as well as multiple Paralympic gold medal win- ner Jacqueline Freney, also up for the award. If the young star is named the winner, she would join the likes of cricket legend Glenn McGrath, ten- nis champ Pat Rafter, Tour de France winner Cadel Evans and veteran jockey Damien Oliver. “There are some big names also there,” Myriam said. “They are people she has looked up to, they are heroes and inspira- tional, so of course I'm proud of her and a lot of other people are too.” Maccabi NSW 2012 Hall of Fame Lowy’s honour roll Chairman, Westfield Group: 1960- present Board member, Reserve Bank of Australia: 1995-2005 Named a Companion of the Order of Australia, 2000 Awarded Centenary Medal for service to Australia through business, 2001 Australia’s leading philanthropist, Philanthropy Australia, 2002 Chairman, Football Federation Australia, 2003-present Recognised on a stamp as part of the Australian Legends series, 2008 Governor, Sydney City Soccer Club Founding president, Hakoah Club Founder and chairman, Lowy Institute Foundation shareholder, Sydney FC Life Governor, United Israel Appeal NSW Life Governor, Masada College Life Governor, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Frank Lowy with former Socceroos skipper Mark Viduka just after Australia qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
