The Dynamics of Change

Franchising is dynamic in its technological, managerial and systemic requirements. To keep pace with the systems and documents required to control and optimise opportunities, it is essential to embrace innovation with creativity. All franchisors need to review their business model, systems and documentation on a regular basis to maintain leadership and keep abreast of change, and importantly ahead of the pack! Our work in this area is often to design and document certain elements of a franchise system for established franchisors, or indeed to complete a full review of the business model with a view to adopting ‘best practice’ standards. Some examples follow:

wokinabox – Existing established SA franchisor

Design and document Franchisee Training Programme and Assessment Tools

Re-design and re-document the Franchisee Operations and Procedures manual.

Design and Document the Franchisee Recruitment System, Manual and provide franchisor Training

Chooks fresh & tasty – Existing established WA franchisor

Provide Strategic Coaching and management advice on a retained basis

Re-design and re-document the Franchisee operations and procedures manual and related systems and

forms

Complete a strategic review of the entire System with a view to upgrading all systemic elements to

‘best practice’ guidelines to then facilitate further expansion across Australia and international markets

Strategic advice & support during the process of divestment to a large National fast food group

Beaumont Tiles – Existing SA based franchise system

Review of current business model and provision of advice on appropriate changes to adopt ‘best

practice’

Design and documentation of Operations and Procedure Manual, Field Support framework, Training

Programme and Performance Review module.

Provision of training for field support personnel.

Ongoing Coaching and strategic advice in respect to the growth plan, on a retained basis

Alberts Car Stereo – existing WA based ‘licensed’ business model

Convert the ‘licensed’ model into a full format franchise system including financial models, territory

issues, marketing platforms and the appropriate systems and documentation to support the growth

plan

About John Brown

The Experience, Knowledge and Support Essential for Franchising Success

With over 34 years of experience in all facets of the franchise industry, John Brown offers an unparalleled level of knowledge and expertise in consulting to this specialised business sector. Following six years in banking John began his career in administration and accounting where he worked for several large multi-national industrial and mining/construction companies across Australia. John entered the franchise sector in 1981 and became a franchisee in the Bedshed Group. Over time, he owned and successfully operated five stores. His strategy at the time was to acquire underperforming stores and improve profitability for a profit on resale. After a brief period as a Business Broker, John became a partner at Franchise Alliance, a small but specialised advisory company operating across Australia that provided recruitment services to franchisors supplemented with a small range of development programmes. Alongside Franchise Alliance the partners also founded Expense Reduction Analysts in Australia, with John as the founding Managing Director. The partnership also held other service based business format franchise systems. With a proven track record as a franchise business owner, able to identify and implement performance enhancement strategies, and as a past partner and director of Franchise Alliance and past founder and owner of Business Development Alliance (BDA), John’s unique understanding of franchising has allowed him to guide many through the often complex and sometimes confusing disciplines of setting up and profitably operating a franchised network. Today, through his new brand Franchise Australia, John provides advice on all aspects of franchising. Specialising in strategic advice for small to medium sized enterprises involved in all manner of business segments in Western Australia and South Australia, he enjoys strong and mutually valued relationships with his clients. John resides in Perth W.A. and travels as required to his home town of Adelaide as and when necessary to service his clients. His vast experience and unique skill set in the strategic design and systemisation of ‘business format franchise’ models is rare. He is highly respected across Australia for his abilities and achievements.

Our Adaptability to Client Needs

We maintain an adaptable, open minded approach because not all businesses are the same and not all should become a franchise. The key is to not contemplate becoming a franchisor unless the decision is based on sound strategic logic, and good information. To access good information, and the supporting logic, business proprietors would be advised to have a study completed which will answer one vital question:

“Can my business be franchised?” To answer this question correctly, we would seek to undertake a ‘whole of business’ Feasibility Review and Study, thereby ensuring that the answer to this key question considers all key structural matters plus financial, operational and other matters which might impact on any future franchise plans. To contemplate becoming a franchisor without such a study would be unwise in today’s business environment, and fraught with commercial risk. Equally, we could not accept a full development project without a considered and informed view as to how it may work based on that review process. It is best to build the solutions to suit a client’s particular business, rather than adopt some elements of a past model because ‘it might work’. This ‘old world’ consulting approach is naïve and dangerous, and a good business doesn’t deserve such an approach. With a sound and logical answer to the key question, we then approach the project with all the benefits and experience that have been gathered in our collective years of actively being involved in the sector. Once it is established that a particular business has a bright future in franchising, we know we can help. Even if a business’s immediate future is not as a franchise network, assistance is available to prepare the business along similar structural lines to reach the scale of systemisation required, and perhaps then readiness for conversion to a franchise plan in the future?

Our Whole of Project Commitment

Like business and life in general, franchising is essentially a journey, not a destination, and our strategic goal is to work with committed people, who own or operate a growing business which has strong future growth potential. Combining that with our extensive range of services and experience as previously detailed, and your decision to proceed, entry into the franchise sector should be carefully considered, planned and executed effectively. We seek to work alongside clients who truly value our knowledge and expertise and for whom we can add value to their business enterprise. During the entire project ‘journey’ we also seek to build the friendships that are a vital component in all truly successful business relationships. Our proven services throughout John Browns extensive franchise career on a continuing basis include the provision of support in most areas of growing and managing a network, in addition to providing strategic and operational advice as required. We would like the opportunity to help you - and we believe that we can.

Commitment to the Value of Strategy

The task of designing and building a franchise or a business model of any type must, of necessity, have a strategic core guiding it. Without a strategy that controls the very essence of every action and reaction within a business, there is great risk of losing focus. During a typical project we would work alongside you the client, to ensure the following are in place:

A simple, effective Franchise Business Plan

A Vision Statement

A Mission Statement

A Cultural Values Statement

A Franchise Management Organisational Structure

Without these guiding principles an organisation would find it difficult to optimise its opportunity and relationships, and that is what we are engaged to help achieve - to grow and to prosper. We trust that this brief Capability Statement sufficiently answers preliminary questions about the services offered by us and we keenly look forward to answering questions about your specific needs and how we might assist in achieving your particular business or franchising goals.
