I love London, I love the constant hustle and bustle and the thousands of faces that pass me daily. Here of all places is the observers heaven, maybe not at first glance, I mean they don’t walk around in tight groups like in the playground and talk to no one but their own kind. However, if you look closely you will see the groupings that occur, the fashion tribes, the obsessive’s, the cult members.

London really is a battleground of rival fashion tribes seeking desperately to be no-ticed, to stand out and be counted.

Whether it’s tattooing your body in order to show your absolute loyalty to a brand, or by buying every latest bag that your favourite designer has just brought out, its obvious

that fashion followers come in every differ-ent variation possible. I think that its safe to say the more that one tries to be ‘differ-ent’ the easier it is to put them into groups and section them.

It is human nature to stick to what you know and mingle with your kind. If you were to walk the busy streets of London you would see with your own eyes the different groupings of people. Just by taking a closer look at these tribes it is clear that the one thing determ-ing all this is, postcode. In one day you could mix with the Shoreditch 'trendies', with the 'rar's' in Chelsea and the 'IT' girls of Primrose Hill. All of this just by hopping on the tube, arent you lucky!

Fashion TRI-BES

Obsessed much?

Right so lets do a 360 degree tour around Lon-don town, revealing who these fashion tribes are, what they wear and where they hang out. beginning logically in the North.

NORTH

Camden/ Primrose Hill

WHO? Creative’s with Dollar.

In times gone by, this well known part of Lon-don was the watering hole for hormonal, emo-tional teens tripping over there baggy long trousers on their way to Maccy-d’s! No longer is this the case, Camden has changed roles. It’s now more of a 'spot the Camden trendy' sort of place. Whether they’re a radio One DJ hitting the Odeon on an evening or your very own Pete Docherty doing his rounds at Proud nightclub your sure to spot someone on the celebrity list. Full of markets and freaky little shops selling platformed boots and neon raver gear this area is not short of creativity. Just a short walk along the canal you’ll reach Prim-rose Hill, the leafy area which reminds me of reading books in front of the fire. Full of directors, actors and men wearing cords with torteshell glasses resting on their noses, this is an expensive area. Very desirable, darling.

EAST

Shoreditch/old Street

WHO? The Shoreditch cheesy quavers

Inner East London. Very fashionable right now. Whether it’s munching down a curry late night on Brick lane or having a cheeky drink at the George and Dragon on a school night, this area has a camp frivolity that makes you watch and stare. The characters are intense, the uniform plaid shirts and Ray bans. The need to stand out is so great here that the tribes can be pointed out with very little ef-fort. There is a great buzz to this area which retro seems to inspire. East End ‘caffs’ line the streets and the cockney accent is rife, after all it is cool to be a commoner in these parts. No longer is it cheap to buy here, huge warehouse conversions are top of everybody’s wish list.

SOUTH

Knightsbridge/Chelsea/ South Kensington

WHO? Old money, collars up people

Think Harrods, think Harvey Nicks, think of the people who actually buy their groceries from these stores and you’ve got your next tribe. The Sloane rangers who like to hang out on the K.R. at ‘Bluebird’ in the middle of Summer. You wouldn’t dare spit out the words ‘New money’ you really would be jolly hockey-sticked right back down to the Fullham Road. The uniform tends to include a well-heeled suede loafer, teamed with a Ralph Lauren jumper, very Jilly Cooper. Their kids attend the school’s published in Tatler and their houses, not flats, cost a bomb! On the night-club front Boujis and Mahiki’s take centre stage with treasure chests and fake palm trees galore.

WEST

Notting Hll/Shepherd’s Bush

WHO? Fever for the flava

I first fell in love with this area on my first viewing of that great British comedy Notting Hill. It is safe to say this film really does encapsulate the true essence of this part of London. Notting Hill’s bright vibrant colors are the outcome of Caribbean and African influences. This area really is a melting pot of different cultures, and they are all show-cased at the Notting Hill carnival in the summer. E & O is the drinker’s destination in Westbourne Grove with the middle classes swarming here to get their pints of bitter in. The residents here tend to be more conserva-tive then their East London paradox, with their professional jobs and well established backgrounds they are more inclined to be reading the papers then be returning from an all nighter.

Introducing Joey Yandell- the 23 year old new music blogger on the scene. With a background in graphic design and a passion for all things techno his new blog has all th trimmings to be a huge success. No longer is it 7.30 on a Friday night watching Top of the Pops, with your mum, that you can get your music fix, it’s right here right now. With his tall phisique and even bigger heart it proves that BIG THINGS really do come in big packages after all…

A blog is the compression of the term web log…. Web log… blog…. You get it? A blog for those who don’t know,(or should I say who

have been hibernating like a bear in winter for the last five years) it’s a type of website usually maintained by an individual. A blog can be kept of, well, es-sentially anything whether your interest lies in fashion, sex, music or for those just egotisti-cal enough to blog about their own day to day lives. YAWN… no-body really gives a shit…

JOEY YANDELL’s blog on the other hand is bursting at the seams full of wit and so crammed full of music that you can practically feel the bass just logging on. Joeyplays.com is updated regu-larly with his favourite “tunes”

to break up your day and make you smile as you whack on your headphones and feast your ears on Joeys new musical offering. With his good ear for music, Joey hopes to spin this into a career in the industry and to one day be a music producer.

I met up with Joey one Autumn sunny day in a small café just off the Fullham Road in West London. As I sipped my Mocha latte looking at my watch won-dering how many minutes past the hour he would turn up, the door opened and in came a rushing Mr. Joey Yandell all of a flutter… He wasn’t late just “wanted to be

TRI reading a blog, go on you might like it

early” for me. In he zimmed wear-ing slick black puma trainers with bright green flashes through them, plain blue jeans teamed with a black and bright pink Nike jacket. Very east London! As we greeted each other the young waitress came over offering him the menu giving him a cheeky look and fluffing her feathers all of a sudden at the sight of him. Joey absentmindedly noticed nothing, this prompting me to think that her reaction wasn’t unusual.

We exchanged casual conversation and he was funny and charismatic just as I’d imagined he would be from reading his blog.

So Joey, How old were you when you first got into music on a deeper level?

JOEY- How old was I? (he smiles) well, I first got into music when I was 8 or 9, when I was travel-

ling to and from school. I guess, my dad first really got me into music, my dad definitely encour-aged me! The reason I did the blog and started, you know, writ-ing the blog is because, well it sounds big headed but I have got quite good taste in music, and at the same time it’s a hobby and its quite nice when people say yeah it’s a cool tune, people come back to me and they’re like how’s your blog going and stuff like that which is quite nice to have a bit of credit for it.

FRANKIE-What’s your favourite type of music?

JOEY- Favourite genre urmmmm… id probably say, due to my brother deep house… that’s really my core roots, but at the same time I like tech house and I’m getting into stuff like techno, dubstep and two step… but i’d probably say tech house and deep house are

up there too!

FRANKIE- What’s your favourite party song?

JOEY- Well, if I could put on a tune to get the ‘party started’ (cringed out laugh) it would have to be some house not hard cord techno or anything, do you know what im sayin? It would be jamirqoi, space cowboy the club remix, which is pretty amazing if you’ve heard it? I heard it played live at bestival this year and it was pretty amazing! It’s one of my tunes that I’ve loved forever! He’s such a legend he’s a dude!

FRANKIE- Where’s your favourite club in London?

JOEY- Probably at the moment id probably say Matter, be-cause there are just wiked tunes there!! And I used to love The Key at kings cross but its closed now, but yeah as of now defiantly Matter nightclub!

FRANKIE- What’s the magazine that you buy religiously?

JOEY- Yeah I have one, but it’s nothing to do with music! (chuck-les away) It’s the National Geographic!! I buy it cos’ it has such random stuff in it! Are aliens really around us and all that shit! (Still chuckling)

FRANKIE- I love that! That is so so sweet! Ok, so your favourite decade in fashion and music?

JOEY- Hummm… The nineties were pretty cool! Old school dance! Just wicked tunes, I think incog-nito were from that era! And all my cheesy old school dance an-thems that everyone just loves. I need to put some more up actually but my computer’s screwed! I’ve actually just lost all my shit on my hard drive, it’s just broke actually!

FRANKIE- Oohhh NOT COOL!!! Right moving on to brighter things! Do you have a style icon that in-spires you?

JOEY- Errrrmmm, I dunno I guess loads of people do.

FRANKIE- Anyone they can be dead or alive (I prompt)

Page 39: Francesca Pizzolon's portfolio

JOEY- Richard Branston!

FRANKIE- You like his style?

JOEY- Yeah I like what he’s done I really respect him!

FRANKIE- No I mean style as in clothes!

JOEY- Oh OK, well I don’t know, I could tell you what shops I like if that helps!

FRANKIE- Yeah definetly!

JOEY- Uniglo, Clay, ermmm.. WESC, and ermm, actually I’m not gonna say it’s pretty gay..

FRANKIE- No go on!

JOEY- Ok, id say GAP!

FRANKIE- GAP is a very cool shop!

JOEY- I just love their jeans man…

FRANKIE- They have great tghts for the winter months as well…

JOEY- Errr gay… (chuckles)

FRANKIE- They keep you snugly and warm….

JOEY- Hahaha

FRANKIE- Ok, moving on to more things musical. Who do you think will be big in the New Year?

JOEY- Joy Orbison has just come on the scene and is only 22. He is a 2step DJ and has a lot of talent. Everyone is trying to get him to play right now. Pantyraid are also very sought after at the mo, they are considered ‘grimey’ but are heavy. I am loving Keaver and Brause too, especially the tune ‘Awake’..have a listen, it will be on the blog soon.

FRANKIE- Cool, ok what’s your favourite DJ that you have seen playing live?

JOEY- Jazzy B, Bullion, Fake Blood. Underworld (electronic band)

FRANKIE- Right my last question that I put to you is, if you got marooned on a desert island, what 3 tracks would want with you?

JOEY-I would have to say some-thing that is close to me and my family. So it’s very different to what I would post on my blog or play at a party. It is ‘Pat Metheny - Last Train Home.’ The other has to be ‘Jamiroquai - Space Cowboy(Club Mix)’, a;ways gives me a smile! The final one would be ‘Steely Dan - Peg.’
