In today’s readings we hear a lot about sinfulness. We should not be blinded to the reality of sin which is part of our unhappy worlds. It is foolish and dangerous self-deception to point the finger at others without taking note of our own sins. Our Lord Jesus Christ suffered and died on the cross because of sin and each of us in some way contributed to His passion and death. The genius of man has built up in our age an imposing scientific empire, but the sinfulness of man has made him a slave in his own kingdom! Man is in conflict with man, and nation with nation. The fundamental division are the product of sin, for sin is separation: man is separated from God, and man from man. When an individual realises his personal sinfulness, it ought not to lead to depression but it should lead to an act of humility before God. It is this which prompts us to seek from God what we cannot achieve for ourselves, namely that peace, which comes from forgiveness and CAFOD HARVEST FAST DAY – Please pray for the work of CAFOD this Harvest Fast Day, Friday 5 Oct, focusing on hunger and food.
