FATHER JARETT’S ~ Q & A
Do you think the Catholic Church will ever give up the idea of Natural Family Planning and change its teaching on contraception? When men and women “never” again find themselves, alone, broken, and unhappy after uninhibited sexual relations, the Catholic Church will then change its teaching on contraception. In other words, to answer the question, no, the Church’s teaching will not change, because God’s plan for life, love, marriage and happiness will not change. As the elderly often remind me, over the last few generations America has quickly been “going to hell in a handbasket,” especially in the area of sexual morality on television and so many other forms of media. Therefore, if that handbasket is falling by way of sexual immorality (addiction, pornography, and adultery), then it would seem, the only way the handbasket will be saved is through a new evangelization in this same area, sexual morality. Pope Paul VI knew this when he wrote Humanae Vitae, Pope St. John Paul II knew this when he lectured on the Theology of the Body, Pope Benedict XVI knew it in his encyclical Deus Caritas Est, and Pope Francis knew it in writing Amoris Laetitia. These vicars of Christ on earth knew that the renewal of a culture revolves around its understanding and practice in regards to, love, sex and marriage. There are some other perceptions out there. Perhaps you have heard this one. It seems the real reason that the Catholic Church forbids sex outside of marriage stems from an age old perception of sex as sinful or dirty? Let’s take a look at this reasoning. Do you think that as a child the real reason you weren’t allowed to play with your great grandmother’s good china was because your mother believed the use of it was inherently wicked and inappropriate? Of course not; you were not allowed to use the china to make mud pies in the yard because of the china’s priceless beauty and value. It certainly could be used, but only in the right context with people who held for it, similar appreciation. The Catholic Church’s teaching on marriage and sex does not come from a negative view of sex, but from an amazing appreciation of the beauty and value of it. Sadly, it seems that today, we have taken sex out of its appropriate place within the context of marital love and are using it to make mud pies. Here are three reasons why I think Natural Family Planning has an integral part in the new evangelization and the renewal of married love. 1. Communication 2. Discipline 3. God. Couples are comfortable talking on just about anything and everything, but the “why’s, how’s, and when’s” of marital sex and children remains somewhat taboo. Utilizing the gift of the cycle of fertility in

the woman’s body through hormonal and biological signs forces a communication and intimacy between man and woman that would not otherwise exist. When husband and wife are forced to communicate about how, when, and why they are trying or are not trying to have children, they are led to a greater appreciation for one another as well as greater appreciation for each other’s bodies. Secondly, discipline. We want diets without discipline, we want angelic children without setting boundaries, and we want love without self-sacrifice. None of which are possible. We cannot have the joy of Jesus Christ in this world without taking up our cross and following Him. Regulating the “when” of sex within marriage requires a level of mastery of the will, of sacrifice, of discipline that is so greatly needed in order to have a joy filled marriage. Lastly, God. Using contraception says not Thy will, but my will be done. While, NFP allows for God’s will for sex in the sense that every conjugal act is left unobstructed and open to the beauty of God’s gift of fertility. Our world absent of God’s presence says such actions are irresponsible. But, in a world where God is given full control and there is a trust that he doesn’t give more than we can handle, such actions are faithful and reasonable. God rewards the faithful, and as mom liked to say, sometimes we don’t see it in this life but our reward will be great in heaven.
