Foxworthy Baptist Church

In Mar 2010, Lifeway, CA Convention and CC Association offered a program to 8 smaller churches in the area:

• Consulting/mentoring from large growing churches – in our case: Broadmoor Baptist, Jackson, MS • Called the Momentum Project – momentum for growth and change in order to become more effective in bringing others to Christ

Two staff members and the pastor from Broadmoor spent time here:

• Walked around the facility; observed worship, Sunday School; interviewed neighbors• Led several sessions with 20-25 Foxworthy participants

Suggested we could benefit from an in-depth, prayerful look at everything we do

Don suggested we call our project, “FOXWORTHY 2020”

Comments/observations from the consultants:

• FBC is a strong Christian family• FBC is a strong praying family• However, FBC is missing opportunities to spread the gospel –

missing opportunities to reach the unsaved in the San Jose area• FBC has not been successful at bringing young families to the

church• FBC’s facilities are outdated, confusing & cluttered

Conclusion: FBC has a strong base to build on.• Suggested we look at church attendance and population trends to

see if FBC was “keeping up.”

The Process:• Don asked Chris Evans, Rod Kriewall and me to come up

with a process for the church to use to evaluate the consultants’ findings/observations

• The consultants suggested the book, “Leading Congregational Change”

• We invited everyone in the congregation to join the process• Beginning on June 16 a group that ranged in size from 30-45

met for six sessions as a group (and many more times in teams) over the summer

• Our starting point was FBC’s Mission Statement: “Love God, Love People”

Foxworthy 2020Here is the process we followed and will follow:

• Collect data• Understand current realities• Look at God’s ideal for a new testament church• Formulate a vision for the church• Select priorities and form teams• Make recommendations

Some, not all, recommendations will take a voteSome, not all, recommendations will require a budgetA few recommendations will necessitate changes in Constitution

and/or Policies & Procedures• Involve all who want to participate• Implement recommendations

The VisionA congregation can perform many valuable ministries, all of which can serve

God – a clear vision (20/20) helps us choose which ministries at Foxworthy can have the most impact for the Kingdom.

We studied the bible for examples of God revealing his vision:

• When God revealed His plans to Moses & Paul, did He provide all of the details and explanations? Did they know everything that would happen?

Ex 3:10; Heb 11:24-28; Acts 9:15

• Does God have visions for us today as individuals? As a congregation? How do you know? Matt 28:18-20

We prayed , we discussed, we discussed, we prayed – and we drafted a Vision Statement for Foxworthy Baptist Church

Vision StatementVision Statement Foxworthy Baptist Church is committed to fulfilling its mission to “Love God, Love

People” by creating an environment where visitors are welcomed and where disciples are equipped to live out their faith victoriously, sharing Christ and His promise of salvation with all.

We seek to accomplish that mission by being a place where:

1. Prayer is an active part of the church life. 2. The worship service is personally welcoming, culturally relevant and biblically sound.3. Our church is visible and active in our community. 4. Families within our church and community are actively nurtured through ministries to

children, youth, young adults, parents and couples.5. Senior adults are valued and integrated into the full spectrum of church life and ministry.6. Friendship, encouragement and support are available to all members through active group

relationships. 7. Structured ministries are in place for believers to grow deeper in their relationships to God and

each other. a. Believers will move from first contact through growth and ministry to life-long

discipleship.b. There is a constant equipping and releasing of new disciples into ministry and leadership.c. All ministries share a common sense of purpose and cooperation.d. Mission involvement and financial support is encouraged locally, nationally and

internationally through the established SBC agencies and through the sending of our own people to the mission field.

8. Quality facilities are accessible and well-maintained.

9

Page 10: Foxworthy 2020 report final

We focused on 4 priorities and formed teams around those priorities:

• Worship: the reason we were created

• Sunday School : Primary vehicle for fellowship, discipleship, ministry, evangelism

• Children/Youth Ministries: The future

• Facilities (greeting/frontline team, signage, lighting, décor, maintenance, landscaping, parking, clutter): Our first Impression to visitors

10

Page 11: Foxworthy 2020 report final

We set high expectations for the teams

• Current Reality for your team’s area: What is it? What methods/data did you use to describe current reality?

• God’s ideal for Foxworthy – What is your vision for your team’s area of responsibility: Beyond the specific recommendations for 2010/2011, what is your dream/God’s ideal for your area? – How would you describe the gap (for your area) between current reality and God’s ideal?

• What 4-5 specific things are you recommending for 2010/2011? For each recommended action:

How do they link to our Vision Statement? How? Who? When? Needed resources?

• Recommended first communications activities for your team’s activities.

The reasons for changing “Sunday School” to “Life Groups” are as follows:1. Some adults consider “Sunday School” to be childish, for kids only.2. “Life Group” more accurately reflects people sharing, studying & applying

God’s Word and reaching out to others.3. “Life Group” symbolizes the higher expectations for both members and teachers
