Dragons Den Report by Mrs Chudley

Yet again this year it was a great day and good to see so many pupils taking part . The task was to choose one aspect which students believe could be improved and see what could be done to overcome this. The pupils were amazing - they were phoning companies around the country, exchanging emails with various top organizations, designing web pages, interviewing, designing, painting and con-ducting surveys and working as cross year groups. The themes included - outdoor classrooms and making the school more welcoming and anti - bullying strategies. Well done to all those who took part and to the team from Toro who won overall. Thanks also to the Dragons, Gill Jacobs, Gavin Bray, Jo Carpenter and Clive Bath.

Bridport Pantomime Report by Sarah Williams On the 1st - 4th February I took part in Bridport Pantomime. I danced ballet and tap and took part in all 6 performances. (Thursday and Saturday). Three in ballet on Thursday (both) and Saturday evening. I did every performance in tap as I am in the adult group. Over all I really enjoyed it and will be taking part next year as well. Congratulations to Amy Davies and Nia Kanillaki in T8ML who raised over £700 for Diabetes UK and MS Society at the Burton Bradstock Village Hall

House News ADLER

Report by Mrs Andrews

‘It’s just not wise to start smoking!’

This is the message that a group of Year 8 students have been spreading to others – both in school and out! We have been lucky enough to take part in this exciting initiative that has been run successfully by the NHS Decipher-Assist team in other schools in Dorset. Peer Mentors were chosen by the year group in January and they took part in a 2-day training course to learn about all the positives of being smoke-free and how to communicate this effectively to others. All students involved have a log-book to com-plete and several follow-up sessions had been held in school to support them and give advice and further guidance where necessary. The initiative may be at an end but the impact will be on going in school. The students really have been fantastic to work with!

‘It’s all happening in The Street’

This was the theme of the FDL non-uniform day to raise money for our house charity –Shelterbox. We try to provide a box a year for their charitable efforts in disaster hit areas and the charity day puts us on track to achieve this again in 2012! Special thanks must go to the Year 11‟s for the Valentine heart chocolates – delivered to staff and students alike in hand-decorated envelopes! Music on the speakers at break and a live band in the hall at lunch provided a great sound track to the graffiti trail, video booth and face-painting in the main street of the school!

Report by Mr Herbert Picking up the reigns of Adler House this term it has been really great meeting lots of students and discussing how they have been getting on this year. In particular I was very impressed with my first meeting of the House Council Team who have been putting forward their ideas for discus-sion at the next full school council meet-ing. It is good to see democracy and stu-dent voice is alive and well.

Year 11 Year 11 Adler students have also been leading the way outside of the classroom both in and out of school. It is great to see them pursuing other interests away from their important exam preparations. Jaz Mather and Lucy Paull have been brilliant student leaders during the recent „Global Rock Challenge‟ well done girls. Jordan Daniels continues to excel at Bas-ketball and his team „Weymouth Tropics‟ currently head the Solent League. Ryan Gall has been improving his football all the time and has been playing for Beaminster men‟s first team. Phillipa Gatehouse has for the second year running been crowned as Dorset Ladies Fencing Champion, a future Olympian in the making.

Ali G in da house! Adler were thrilled that Will Pearce (A9NAS) managed to get over his normal-ly shy and retiring nature to put in an uncanny and impressive Ali G impersona-tion during the variety show. It unanimous-ly earned him the honour of winning the Year 9 part of that competition. Will has been inspired by the stage and is one of a number of boys who have joined this years „Rock Challenge‟ team which is really great to see, well done boys!

Well done A7JS! Mr Sutcliffe‟s group are leading the way in Adler this year for house points. 2144 points have been amassed this year and are being closely followed by A8KK. The challenge has been laid down to the other groups to catch up and get over the 2000 mark. Come on everybody!

Sixth Formers Get a Taste For Life

After School Report by Mrs Fender

Governors attached to the sixth form have arranged a series of Careers Talks for the Sixth Form every Tuesday from January to March. The talks have covered broad areas including the Media, NHS, Engineer-ing, Medical Profession and Construction. Mr Nic Jeune spoke eloquently about the Opportunities in the Media which has given students a fascinating insight into the world of film; how vital it is that everyone contributes and that flourishing careers commence with the most menial of tasks. Mrs Nic Armstrong described the broad and engaging range of career choices avail-able in the NHS. Mr Noonan spoke about Engineering and the Motor Industry. It was good to learn that there are good opportuni-ties for both males and females in the motor industry and it was incredible seeing a car being constructed, from wax model to proto-type. The Sixth Form have really enjoyed the talks and found them inspiring

Sixth Form Mock Interviews

In the Sixth Form we help equip students to face the world after school. Securing a place at university is increasingly challenging and the job market is extremely competitive. Students are given support when constructing their CVs or Personal Statements and are supported Learning managers and the Mentoring Programme. They also have the choice of optional interviews for those who wish to have the experience of a mock university or job interview. In the past the academic and business interviews have been conducted by the Head of Sixth Form alone but in future the Sixth Form Governors will be involved in mock job interviews and have expertise in Teaching, The Arts, the NHS and Business including Engineering.

News Rock Challenge 2012 Report by Mr Bray

The Rock Challenge 2012 took place in Bournemouth with a record eighty five students taking part this year our entry in the dance event. Rehearsals have been taking place since October last year on the students‟ own chosen theme of "Child abuse". The performance was entitled "Suzie's Story" named after the Michael Jackson song used in the opening scene. Performers from all over the region take part in a day which includes warm ups and meetings with various technical groups before a public performance in the evening. Thirteen schools were involved this year ranging from dance specialists to primary. All were a very high standard. The students worked extremely hard throughout the rehearsal process and the whole dance was choreographed by four brilliant year 11 students: Jaz Mather, Harry Poole, Emily Meech and Lucy Paull. After a long day and night of rehearsing and performing the results were announced, Colfox were first of all awarded a very special "Ten Year" award for taking part in the contest every year since 2002. We were also given "The Spirit of Rock Challenge" award - voted for by all the other schools taking part on the day for most supportive and well mannered performers and our final award of "Healthiest Lifestyle" previously nominated by Rock Challenge co-ordinator, Gavin Bray for preparation and rehearsals. Overall a valiant effort and a great experience for everyone involved, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone from performers, crew, staff and travelling audience alike.

News Report by Mr Bray After six months hard work the Colfox KWN team have com-pleted their Olympic themed documentary. This has since been sent to the head of Panasonic UK for judging and the team will find out if they have been lucky enough to win an award at

the UK Grand Finals in Red-ditch in May. Over the past few months the team have inter-viewed Paul Blake, the world

800 metre Paralympic champion and Adam Pengilly, Team GB Skeleton Bobsleigh com-petitor. They asked each athlete interviewed how young people in the local area may find Olympic success, how they began in their respec-tive sport and if they had any ad-vice for young people aspiring to feature at future Olympics. If the “Olympic Aspirations” documentary is lucky enough to be selected as UK Grand Prix winner then some of the team will be flown to Germany for the Euro-

pean finals and then, as the UK are host-ing the World Finals some of

the team will attend a week of special events in London, culminating in a day at the 2012 London Olympics in August. Mr Bray the co-ordinator of the KWN project commented “The hard work of the team is clearly reflect-ed in the quality and professional look of the finished film – I am so proud of the effort and commitment they have shown and know that whatever the result at the awards in May they have learnt and achieved so much”

Report by Miss Barr

Amy Van Zyl was voted „Best Individual Speaker‟ in Rotary‟s Youth Speaks com-petition on Friday, 27th January. Speak-ing on freedom of speech and its limits, Amy impressed the judges with the sub-stance and conviction of her argument and her ability to respond to a challeng-ing question from the audience on the role of the government in enforcing freedom of speech. In the first round, held in the Burton Brad-stock village hall, Tilly Jeune and Grace Crabtree, joined Amy Van Zyl in the school‟s senior team, narrowly losing out to a polished Beaminster School team, which spoke about English attitudes to learning foreign languages. At intermediate level, Rachel Van Zyl was her team‟s chairperson, Caitlin Appleby-Scott was the main speaker and Eden Taylor proposed the vote of thanks. They raised the question of whether schooldays really are the best days of your life. The team was defeated by a Beaminster team which proposed that everyone should be encouraged to play music. Youth Speaks is a prestigious national competition in which teams of three with distinctive roles and responsibilities pre-sent an argument within precise time lim-its. The girls who participated are to be congratulated. They invested a lot of time in preparing and rehearsing their speech-es. It took a great deal of nerve to stand up and deliver their ideas with such clari-ty and expression before the judges and audience. The school can be very proud of their performance. Many thanks go to the local Rotary Club for organising this challenging event. Youth Speaks is one of many ways in which Rotary continues to support our pupils with great generosity of time and spirit.

Rowing At Wey Valley School On Tuesday 13th March, the second of four Dorset School Games events took place at Wey Valley School. More than 140 young people took part in the event, which was supported by local gig clubs Bridport and Portland. Sir John Colfox School took the plaudits after dazzling displays from their Year 8 Girls and Year 9 Boys (pictured above), who claimed victories in their indi-vidual events. Both sets of youngsters also received trophies for being the fastest team cups across all the age groups competing in the event. They will now go on to represent West Dorset at the final, which will be held in Bournemouth on July 13th.

„The level of competitive performances, team work and camaraderie was outstand-ing and enjoyed by all schools part taking in the event,‟ said Katherine Morris, British Rowing Participation Team Leader for Wes-sex. Taken from the British Rowing web-

Sports News Dorset Under 18 Hockey

Tournament

The annual under eighteen hockey tourna-ment took place at Gillingham this year. Having finished runners up on numerous occasions, we were hoping to be success-ful this time. It was a round robin tourna-ment with the team with the most points winning overall. Our first game started well, with a three-nil victory over Gryphon school. We then went on to beat Poole Grammar School 2-1. With Gillingham having only drawn their first game we were hopeful this might be the year that we would win the trophy. After two games off we went on the pitch to play Queen Elizabeth School. They were a strong team who fielded three county players, including the county captain. They had also just played a previous game which gave them a physical and mental advantage. Despite some good play we conceded an early goal and went on to lose 2-0. At this stage we still had a chance of winning the tournament if we beat Gillingham in the final game. Unfortunately it was not to be and in a scintillating final game we eventually lost 2-1 meaning that Gillingham won overall. Team: Stewart, Mullen, Girling, Bird, E.Donovan, D.Donovan, Andrews, Aplin, Hughes, Letherby, Gape, McNamee.

The day, at Wey Valley School and Sports College, was led by Bournemouth University students. All students thoroughly enjoyed the day and are now looking forward to working with primary school students at various events on this year‟s calendar.

Dance Festival Year 9 BTEC dancers hosted the annual year 3/4 dance festival at Freshwater Caravan Park this term. They did a fan-tastic job of announcing, judging and lead-ing a routine with 200 younger students and older students from Mountjoy School – no mean feat! Well done girls.

The Year 10 and 11 GCSE History classes attended a highly entertaining and informa-tive revision session at the Barnfield Theatre in February. The afternoon was divided into two parts; the first of which was a highly useful session with the noted historian Josh Broomfield who explained what examiners are looking for from each type of examina-tion question. The second half was a very useful and, at times, highly amusing gallop through the History of Medicine.

We witnessed members of the Coldstream Guards laying a wreath before they departed for Afghanistan; all the students found this a very moving experience. Tuesday morning saw us travel to the Somme Battlefields where we visited, Thiepval, Serre, Vimy Ridge, Lochnagar Crater and Sheffield Park. The final day was spent visiting sights around Ypres where the guides, who were with us throughout the trip, proved most knowledgeable and skilled in dealing with forty-three year 8 students! The Sanctuary Wood Museum, with its re-constructed trenches and tunnels, was described by Sammy Raymond as „ace‟. A quick visit to a Chocolate Shop in Ypres rounded off our stay and we returned safe but very tired on Wednesday evening. This was a fabulous trip and our students were a credit to themselves and the school. We will be scheduling another trip next year if we can.

Report by Mr Lithgow

On a cold but clear Monday morning in January, forty-three rather bleary eyed students and their parents assembled at 03:00 ready to depart for a jam-packed history trip. We arrived in time to visit the reconstructed German trenches at Bayernwald. We stayed at the Poppies School Hotel in Ypres which was handily placed to wit-ness the very moving „Last Post‟ Ceremo-ny which has taken place every evening at the Menin Gate since the 1920s.

The annual trip to Blencathra in the Lake District was a great success, with year 11 geographers enjoying some classic cold Cumbrian rainfall in late February. Luckily there was some respite from the rain later in the week, and the stunning scenery was revealed in all its glory. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the trip, practicing both their geography and their northern accents in a idyllic location. The students, were a credit to the school and impressed everyone at the field studies council with their work ethic and collective sense of hu-mour. A film of the trip, starring our very own Alfie Edwards, gives our students a perfect opportunity to relive some of the great moments offered by this great annual visit to one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

From the 30th January to the 3rd February, Miss Brown and Mrs Fairley took a group of 20 year 10 and year 11‟s to Rome. We arrived at school at half past midnight, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. We landed in Rome excited and raring to go, at around 10am. In the morning we met with our tour guide, Francesco, who took us around the city and showed us all of the beautiful sights of Rome. We stayed in a hotel called Hotel Dina which was really lovely and friendly, but we were on the top two floors, so lots of stairs! We experienced the 5D Time Elevator which left lots of us feeling rather sick! We learnt about how the Roman Empire was created and about the painting of the Sistine Chapel. Gladiator School was an entertaining experience!

The instructor, Hermes, was quite scary but we all had lots of fun, especially watching Miss Brown and Mrs Fairley hav-ing a gladiator match! Visiting the Colosseum was interesting, it‟s difficult to comprehend how big it is until you visit (even if it is in the rain!). We also visited the Vatican City and St Peter‟s Basilica, which was absolutely amazing. Other highlights included the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps

and seeing some original Michelangelo and Leonardo paintings in the Musei Capotolini. None of us wanted to leave and we all had so much fun. Thank you so much to Miss Brown and Mrs Fairley for taking us.
