Walking in the Light of the Lord Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Lent. It is also known as Laetare Sunday. Laetare means rejoice. We are half‐way through Lent. Why are we rejoicing? Precisely because we are halfway through Lent! We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. If that light is still dim because we haven’t been pleased with our Lent so far, we still have time to change and allow for our heart’s conversion. The Collect (Opening Prayer) today has a sense of urgency about it. We hear of “prompt devotion”, “eager faith”, and that “people may hasten”. People may hasten to the solemn celebration to come. We are given a glimpse into the Resurrection that is coming. It is the encouragement we may need to continue our Lenten journey. Unlike our Jewish ancestors that we hear about in the First Reading today from Chronicles, we know how the story ends. We know that Jesus came as our Savior and Redeemer. The Israelites are in the midst of their exile wondering if they will ever be home. Then Cyrus, the King of Persia, allows those who belong to Judah to return to Jerusalem. There the Temple will be built. The people return, but still await the coming of the Messiah. Paul reminds the Ephesians and us that by faith we have been saved through God’s grace. This is not our doing, but a gift from God. Do I ever think of treating my faith as a true gift from God? Paul further reminds us that this gift is not from our work so we cannot boast; rather we are God’s handiwork. Again, do I ever think of myself in that way? If I did, I might take better care of what God has given me. In John’s Gospel today we hear one of the most quoted phrases in scripture. “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but have eternal life. (Jn3:16)” The light of God came into the world, but people prefer the darkness. We can’t see everything in the darkness. We can hide things in darkness. We can be sneaky in darkness. We are fooled by the darkness.
Let us live the second half of Lent in the light of Christ. The Truth comes to the Light. Christ is our Light.
Let the rest of our Lenten journey be a journey toward a place of all light and goodness. Let’s walk in the
Light of the Lord.

REFLECT How is the corporal work of mercy to feed the hungry demonstrated in this story? How can you help to feed the hungry?
¿Cómo puedes ayudar a alimentar a quienes tienen hambre?
I know the vegetables provide essential vitamins for them. -Eliza
Timor-Leste is a small Asian country, slightly larger than the state of Connecticut. It’s on the other side of the world near Australia, and it’s one of the world’s newest countries—only 18 years old. In comparison, the United States will be 245 years old this year! Many families in Timor-Leste live in rural areas and work as farmers. But challenges like changing weather patterns make it difficult to grow enough food. They depend on rice as a main part of their meals, and hunger and malnutrition are big problems. More than one-third of people in Timor-Leste don’t have reliable access to enough nutritious food. This especially affects children and their ability to develop to their full potential With training from CRS, families are starting home gardens to grow different vegetables, beans and other foods that are rich in nutrients like vitamin A and iron. The gardens are built to withstand droughts and flooding, and the families add the food they grow—such as spinach, cabbage, peanuts, carrots and tomatoes—to their daily rice staple, providing more nourishing meals that help children grow and stay healthy. Parents attend nutrition groups in their communities where they learn how to build and improve their gardens. They also learn new recipes that incorporate the produce they grow—and they sometimes have cooking competitions to see who can prepare the tastiest meal! Eliza and her husband Paulino have six children. After participating in her community’s nutrition group, she and Paulino started a home garden and began growing different crops based on the rainy and dry seasons. They also started raising chickens, which provide additional protein to their meals and income from selling the eggs. Eliza wants her children to be healthy and says, “I know the vegetables provide essential vitamins for them.”

HUMAN HISTORY . . . Today’s reading from 2 Chronicles is the conclusion of these two volumes, a brief summary of Judah’s infidelity under a sequence of kings and the subsequent seventy years of exile in Babylon. This abbreviated sequence recaps the events treated in earlier chapters, concluding with Jerusalem being conquered and its inhabitants deported by to Babylon. After the Babylonians were conquered by Cyrus and the Persians, Cyrus built the great Persian Empire that covered almost the entire ancient Near East. Unlike the earlier Assyrians and Babylonians, Cyrus did not rule by deporting and enslaving peoples he defeated. Instead, he organized his empire into regional governments and funded their construction projects, ruling over all with the title King of Kings (among others). In this spirit, Cyrus urged the exiles to return to Jerusalem to rebuild their temple and their native culture. In Jewish terms, Cyrus was a “messiah” (Hebrew), or a christos (Greek), someone anointed by God to carry out this divine mission.
. . . AND DIVINE RESCUE The return from exile in Babylon was second only to the Exodus from Egypt as a founding narrative shaping the Jewish identity into which Jesus was born and in which his church took root and began to grow. If we read between the lines of the two New Testament readings from today, we can see the outlines of this same pattern of God bringing humanity from sorrow into joy: The Hebrews’ slavery in Egypt and the Judeans’ exile in Babylonia reveal a universal truth, that we belong to the God who is “rich in mercy,” and we are assured that “when we were dead in our transgressions,” God “so loved the world” that he sent Jesus to be the way of our redemption, our salvation. The Fourth Sunday of Lent is sometimes called “Laetare Sunday,” or “Rejoice! Sunday.” Even if we feel overwhelmed by the darkness of sin (our own and others’), wondering whether God really is working on our behalf, we can put our faith in today’s Word that it is so. For this, we can truly rejoice—we are more than halfway to Easter! Today’s Readings: 2 Chr 36:14-–16, 19–23; Ps 137:1–2, 3, 4–5, 6; Eph 2:4–10; Jn 3:14–21
