Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today, on the 4th Sunday of Easter, the universal Church cel-ebrates the 55th World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has informed us that the concentration of the fifteenth synod to take place in October of this year will be young people and their relationships with faith and vocation.Pope Francis writes, "Even amid these troubled times, the mys-tery of the Incarnation reminds us that God continually comes to encounter us. He is God-with-us, who walks along the often dusty paths of our lives. He knows our anxious longing for love and he calls us to joy. In the diversity and the uniqueness of each and every vocation, personal and ecclesial, there is a need to listen, discern and live this word that calls to us from on high and, while enabling us to develop our talents, makes us instruments of salva-tion in the world and guides us to full happiness."Please join me on this World Day of Prayer for Vocations in praying alongside our Holy Father that our youth may be sent out as disciples to foster a deep-rooted Faith and love for Our Lord, Jesus Christ. We also pray in a special way for all the priests and religious serving in the Diocese and specifically that our local Diocese will be blessed with an increase in vocations to the Priesthood and Consecrated Religious Life.We also express gratitude to all married couples for their beautiful example. You are a visible sign for the love that Our Lord Jesus has for His Bride, the Church. With God's grace, may your love grow stronger with the passing of each new day.Through the intercession of Mary Our Mother and Saint Joseph, may Our Risen Lord Jesus bless you and your family in this Sacred Season of Easter and always.

This past Monday, our three Friars; Fr. Steve Patti, Fr. Steve Kluge, and Fr. Jim Sabak celebrated the renewal of their vows witnessed and supported by our community. During The Fran-ciscan School’s morning prayer, some of our eighth grade students lead the community in prayer with students, teachers, staff, and parents. Just as on April 16, 1209 when Saint Francis of Assisi made his profession into the hands of Pope Innocent III and received approval for the way of life he wished to live with his brothers, the Friars of St Francis of Assisi in Raleigh, NC continued the tradition in the Order of Friars Minor (the Franciscan Order) to gather and renew their vows. The purpose of this renewal is to recall the origins of the Franciscan Order and to recall the spirit of St. Francis and his companions as they founded it. For the Friars it is also a time to remember why it was that God called them to live joy-fully this life, and to once again commit themselves to living out the ideals begun by St. Francis and the first Fran-ciscans. This community appreciates your calling, thanks you for listening to it, and values your commitment.

The Fourth Sunday of Easter is, perhaps, the right time for a note or two on the Easter Season, about which we have only reached the halfway mark! But by now it may be difficult to discern that we are still in Easter – the lilies have faded and died and most Easter baskets might be empty of anything except stray black jellybeans or a by now hard-as-rock marshmallow peep – if they haven’t been relegated to the storage box for another year! How is it possible to keep up the joy we are told to have at this time of the year when there are so many other distractions to take our minds and our hearts to other places than an empty tomb or a room behind locked doors? Graduations, end of school, spring festi-vals, prepping the beach or lake house, lawn care and grounds keeping, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day all seem to pivot to the forefront of our concerns at this time of the year. It makes “keeping Easter” all the more difficult it seems – guilt that we only remember it’s Easter when we see the “Easter Banner” still up in the church, or worse, unintentionally indifferent be-cause, “How much can you talk about an empty tomb?!”And yet, Easter is a difficult season, the most difficult season for us as believ-ers to enter into. A simple reason is that our culture and society place more emphasis on preparing for the feast than on celebrating it. Think of all the time put into Lent; is there anything com-parable in celebrating Easter? It can be almost a let-down come Easter Sunday, after all the hours and activity put into making Lent particularly penitential. But the more complex reason is our inability at times to realize that without

Easter there is no faith, there is no com-munity of believers, there is no God in whom to believe. The death of Jesus, contrary to what most people think, does not bring salvation – death is death. It is only in being raised, living again, that Jesus becomes Christ, and is given the “name above all names,” at which “every knee in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, must bend.” Easter takes work to celebrate, more work than Lent surpris-ingly, because Christian life takes work, hard work, to become a life that gives life, and one that does not blindly follow rules and regulations, or one that dies the slow and suffocating death of empty moralism. We must, despite all the absurdity, all the impossibility, all the seemingly nonsensi-cal fantasy, which can complicate and debilitate the power of Easter, believe that with God nothing is impossible and that all things are possible. If we fail to believe, we close our hearts to a God who at every moment surprises by mov-ing us beyond the comfortable and the practical. To exist unaware that such is indeed our God is state of living in which we must fear never to be found. This week we leave behind the empty tomb, because there is nothing there but death, and venture into the second half of Easter to discover a God who neither abandons nor forsakes us, a God who dares us to believe in the great power of selfless love, and a God who threatens us with resurrection – threatens us with the challenge to believe and profess that death, in all its forms and manifestations, does not, and will not ever, have the last word in our destiny as human beings, creations of a God who repeatedly works wonders in our midst.

Without Easter There Is No FaithFr. Jim Sabak, O.F.M., Associate Pastor

Outreach MinistriesBecky Cawley, Justice and Peace Specialist

Join us for an evening reading, reflection and book-signing with longtime activist, priest, author, and Nobel peace prize nominee John Dear about his new book, They Will Inherit the Earth, a landmark work which connects the way of active nonviolence with solidarity with Cre-ation; shows how our global epidemic of violence and war could only lead to catastrophic climate change; and why we need to help build up the global grassroots movement of nonviolence if we are to protect creation. He cites Jesus’ third Beatitude as the basis for his meditation: “Blessed are the meek, they will inherit the earth.” Thomas Merton said “meekness” was the biblical word for “nonviolence” (in the Gandhi/King sense), so Dear notes how Jesus connected nonviolence with oneness with creation, how he practiced nonviolence and lived at one with cre-ation, and how we need to do the same. John Dear will invite us to rise to the occasion, deepen our nonviolence, take new steps into active solidarity with Mother Earth and suffering humanity,

They Will Inherit the Earth: Peace & Nonviolence in a Time of Climate Change

and do what we can to welcome a new culture of peace and nonviolence.https://i2.wp.com/www.stfrancisraleigh.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/John16.jpg?resize=275%2C183&ssl=1

Except from the Introduction of Dear’s “They Will Inherit the Earth”:

One day, while sitting in my house studying the Sermon on the Mount, I saw it right there in front of me. “Blessed are the meek,” Jesus says in the Beatitudes. Thomas Merton wrote that “meekness” is the biblical word for nonviolence. “Blessed are the nonviolent,” Jesus is saying, as if he were an ancient Gandhi, an an-cient Dorothy Day, an ancient Martin Luther King Jr. “They will inherit the earth.”There it is. Blessed are the meek, the gentle, the nonviolent – they will inherit the earth. A life of nonviolent leads to oneness with creation and her creatures.A life of violence, of course, leads to an abrupt discord with creation. In a time like ours of permanent warfare, nuclear weapons, and catastrophic climate change, the message couldn’t be clearer. The God of peace, the nonviolent Jesus, and his Holy Spirit calls us to practice nonviolence. In that way, we’ll renounce and stop our environmental destruction, tend our Garden of Eden together, and restore creation to its rightful peace. In the process, we will discover peace with one another and all the creatures. This is the journey we are all called to live, to make the connection between active nonviolence and oneness with creation, so that we all might dwell peacefully in this paradise. All we have to do is open our eyes to the reality of creation before us, to be present to it, to take it in and honor it, and welcome its gift of peace – and to do so within the boundaries of nonviolence. In that present moment of peace, a new creation is offered to us once again.

Rev. John Dear is a long time peace activist, lecturer, and teacher, and the author of 35 books including Thomas Merton Peacemaker; Lazarus Come Forth!; Living Peace; The Nonviolent Life; and The Beatitudes of Peace. He has been nominated many times for the Nobel Peace Prize, including by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He works with CampaignNonviolence.org and the Vatican Nonviolence Initiative and lives in New Mexico. Happy Birthday to St. Francis of Assisi Parish! We were founded April 25, 1982 which means that St. Francis of Assisi Par-ish is 36 years old. As I was preparing to write this column, I realized that Founders Day isn’t just about the parish. It’s about the people of the parish, too. Every time we welcome a person or a family to the parish, they are experiencing their own personal Founders Day with St. Francis. I arrived at St. Francis of Assisi in October 1988 with my family as new parishioners when we moved to Raleigh, NC. My parents came to St. Francis of Assisi and immedi-ately felt the warm and welcoming environ-ment they wanted for their family. They felt connected to the other parishioners and also to the friars themselves. The friars continue to relate real life situations to the gospel rather than just preaching to the congregation. When I returned to St. Francis after college, I still felt the same spirit of welcome. In my time away I realized the Franciscan Spirit that had been instilled in me when I was a child was still pulling me back to St. Francis even though I lived 30 minutes away. Now I’m raising my son in the same Franciscan Community I grew up in and this same welcoming spirit and Franciscan values are what will keep my son involved and a part of the parish for years to come as well.Just like the people of the parish, The Catholic Community of St. Francis of Assisi has grown and changed. None of us looks like we once did! And over the years we’ve worked and celebrated together as we shared picnics, sold Christmas trees, shared Sack Suppers with the Saints and now my son is making memories at FrancisFest, the Social Justice Fair and Living Stations of the Cross. My hope is that, like me, the memories and values he learns here at St. Francis will stay with him for years to come – whether he’s at St. Francis or another parish. I would like to invite you to share your feelings, hopes, and experiences from your personal Founder’s Day of joining the St. Francis of Assisi Parish. You can share these stories and experiences with your family or friends or reach out and share them with me. And we love pictures! So from one parishioner to another, I’m glad we found St. Francis of Assisi parish. And I hope we get to welcome many more!

The Four Levels of Happiness a lecture by Fr. Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., PhD.April 28, 2018, 6:30pm - Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, RaleighHappiness, as Aristotle noted, is the one thing you can choose for itself – everything else is chosen for the sake of happiness. Father Spitzer has created a system called “The Four Levels of Happiness” to teach high school and college students (as well as adults) the different kinds of happiness – from their sources to their effects.
