St. Gregory Nazianzen Oration I. On Easter and His Reluctance to be Ordained Bishop

20100 I. It is the Day of the Resurrection, and my Beginning has good auspices. Let us then keep the Festival with splendor and let us embrace one another. Let us say Brethren, even to those who hate us; much more to those who have done or suffered aught out of love for us. Let us forgive all offences for the Resurrection’s sake: let us give one another pardon, I for the noble tyranny, which I have suffered (for I can now call it noble); and you who exercised it, if you had cause to blame my tardiness; for perhaps this tardiness may be more precious in God’s sight than the haste of others. For it is a good thing even to hold back from God for a little while, as did the great Moses of old, and Jeremiah later on; and then to run readily to Him when He calls, as did Aaron and Isaiah, so only both be done in a dutiful spirit; —the former because of his own want of strength; the latter because of the Might of Him That calleth. II. A Mystery anointed me; I withdrew a little while at a Mystery, as much as was needful to examine myself; now I come in with a Mystery, bringing with me the Day as a good defender of my cowardice and weakness; that He Who to-day rose again from the dead may renew me also by His Spirit; and, clothing me with the new Man, may give me to His New Creation, to those who are begotten after God, as a good modeler and teacher for Christ, willingly both dy-ing with Him and rising again with Him. III. Yesterday the Lamb was slain, and the doorposts were anointed, and Egypt bewailed her Firstborn, and the Destroyer passed us over, and the Seal was dreadful and reverend, and we were walled in with the Precious Blood. To-day we have clean escaped from Egypt and from Pharaoh; and there is none to hinder us from keeping a Feast to the Lord our God—the Feast of our Departure; or from celebrating that Feast, not in the old leaven of malice and wickedness, but in the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth, carrying with us nothing of ungodly and Egyptian leaven. IV. Yesterday I was crucified with Him; today I am glorified with Him; yesterday I died with Him; to-day I am quickened with Him; yesterday I was buried with Him; to-day I rise with Him. But let us offer to Him Who suffered and rose again for us—you will think perhaps that I am going to say gold, or silver, or woven work or transparent and costly stones, the mere pass-ing material of earth, that remains here below, and is for the most part always possessed by bad men, slaves of the world and of the Prince of the world. Let us offer ourselves, the possession most precious to God, and most fitting; let us give back to the Image what is made after the Image. Let us recognize our Dignity; let us honor our Archetype; let us know the power of the Mystery, and for what Christ died. V. Let us become like Christ, since Christ became like us. Let us become God’s for His sake, since He for ours became Man. He assumed the worse that He might give us the better; He be-came poor that we through His poverty might be rich; He took upon Him the form of a servant that we might receive back our liberty; He came down that we might be exalted; He was tempt-ed that we might conquer; He was dishonored that He might glorify us; He died that He might save us; He ascended that He might draw to Himself us, who were lying low in the Fall of sin. Let us give all, offer all, to Him Who gave Himself a Ransom and a Reconciliation for us. But one can give nothing like oneself, understanding the Mystery, and becoming for His sake all that He became for ours. VI. As you see, He offers you a shepherd; for this is what your Good Shepherd, who lays down his life for his sheep, is hoping and praying for… VII. … Do you on your side offer to God and to us obedience to your Pastors, dwelling in a place of herbage, and being fed by water of refreshment; knowing your Shepherd well, and being known by him; and following when he calls you as a Shepherd frankly through the door; but not following a stranger climbing up into the fold like a robber and a traitor; nor listening to a strange voice when such would take you away by stealth and scatter you from the truth on mountains, and in deserts, and pitfalls, and places which the Lord does not visit; and would lead you away from the sound Faith in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, the One Power and Godhead, Whose Voice my sheep always heard (and may they always hear it), but with deceit-ful and corrupt words would tear them from their true Shepherd. From which may we all be kept, Shepherd and flock, as from a poisoned and deadly pasture; guiding and being guided far away from it, that we may all be one in Christ Jesus our Lord, now and unto the heavenly rest. To Whom be the glory and the might for ever and ever. Amen.

W D P V April 25th, 2021 marks the 58th Anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. By setting aside the fourth Sunday of Easter, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, the church responds to Jesus’ com-mand to “Pray to the Lord of the harvest to send labor-ers into His harvest” (Mt. 9:38, Lk. 10:2). This day reminds us of our need for shepherds, so that we turn to the Lord to pray for more of them, and to pray that those being called be open and preserve in their voca-tions . The Church focuses this day on vocations to the priesthood, religious and consecrated life, and mis-sionaries who will offer their lives for His service. What are some specific things that we can do to pro-mote vocations to the priesthood and religious life? • Pray for priests and sisters who have ministered to

you throughout your life, both living and dead, • Keep our parish priests in your prayers throughout

the week. • Encourage your children, grandchildren, or other

young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister.

• Pray a rosary or vocations prayer for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God’s call.

If you or someone you know might be called to ex-plore their vocation to priesthood or religious life, con-tact Father David Angelino or Father Richard McNeillie – Vocations Director for the Diocese of Galveston / Houston at 713-652-8239 or email him at [email protected].

Holy Spirit, stir within us the passion to promote vocations

to the consecrated life, societies of apostolic life, diocesan priesthood, and permanent diaconate.

Inspire us daily to respond to Your call with boundless

compassion, abundant generosity, and radical availability.

Help us to remember our own baptismal call to rouse us to invite the next generation to hear and respond to Your call.

Inspire parents, families, and lay ecclesial ministers to begin a conversation with young Catholics to consider how they will live lives of holiness and sacred service.

about monastic life, apostolic life, missionaries, cloistered contemplative life, and evangelical Franciscan life.

Looking Back If you recall, in March 2020 when Covid-19 cases were increasing at an alarm-ing rate, the U.S. was effectively placed in ‘lock-down’. Apart from essential workers, we were all asked to shelter in place in our homes. None of us could have foreseen the suffering, distress and anxiety we were about to live through. The ‘Detailed SVDP Report for March 2021 versus March 2020’ (included elsewhere in this column) shows the effect of closing the Food Pantry to the general public in mid March 2020 in order to protect the volunteers, most were older folk and at more risk of a severe illness. The Food Pantry remained closed through April 2020 but what food we had was still being delivered by dedicated volunteers to folk in the community who had called the Church office asking for help. By May 1st 2020 the Food Pantry had reopened and was providing curbside pickup of food, this we continue to do today. Our ability to provide financial aid to the needy in our community at that time was limited because of lack of funds, but our Vincentian case workers contin-ued to help the needy by working from home, performing virtual home visits via phone and transferring documents via emails and texts. Because of your financial support… since March 2020 our dedicated Vincen-tian case workers have processed over 210 financial aid cases totaling around $68,000, saving many families from eviction and/or utility disconnection. Thank You! Do ‘You’ Need Emergency Help ? This pandemic has affected many of us in different ways, loss of a family mem-ber, loss of a job, or being unable to work because the children are at home in-stead of being in school. Our SVdP ministry is here to help our parish mem-bers. We can provide food and maybe help pay a bill if the need is an emergen-cy. If you need help and have no one to turn to, contact us by email at: [email protected] or leave a voice message at 281-242-9149. Include your name, address, telephone number and a short summary of your situation and needs and someone will contact you. If you are calling, please speak slowly and distinctly and repeat your name and telephone number. Thanks for your Support. We thank all our loving parish members and organizations, too many to list, who support our SVdP ministry both spiritually and financially. We thank each one of you for giving our Vincentians the opportunity to grow spiritually by serving the poor and needy in our community on your behalf. We are honored and blessed to be allowed to serve. Detailed SVDP Report for March 2021 March 2020 Utility assistance $3,844.34 $739.86 Housing assistance $2,440.00 $969.42 Medical Assistance $1,151.58 $0.00 Food Pantry* $927.14 $779.80 SVdP Twin Payments** $0.00 $400.00 Total Disbursements $8,363.06 $2,889.08 Total Deposits $7,915.70 $422.38

Family members served 273 225 Bags of food distributed 207 181 Volunteer hours donated (est.) 250 167 * Does not include value of donated food and diapers etc. ** Twin payment in 2020 to Holy Family SVdP ministry to help a particularly needy family. What Food Do We Give To Those Who Need Help? We stock around 48 different non perishable items that have been reviewed by a professional nutritionist, they include: cans of soups, meats, beans, vegetables, fruits, 1lb.dry beans, 1lb.rice, 2lb.flour, 2lb.sugar, vegetable oil, peanut butter, jelly, various pastas, breakfast cereals as well as personal care items like toothpaste, soap, diapers and baby wipes. Why Small Sizes of Sugar, Rice, Beans and Flour? As needy families usually pick up groceries every month, giving out 5 or 10 lb. sizes of sugar, rice, beans and flour would be too much to be con-sumed in a month. Also, because of our limited facility we are unable to obtain a city permit that would allow us to open and repackage food into smaller packages of 1 or 2lbs size. Donations of Food and Personal Care Items Are Welcome! The SVDP ministry can always use your help with donations of non-perishable foods like those listed above. Please leave only ‘food, diapers and personal care items’ in the donation boxes locat-ed just inside the Church and Chapel entrances. Clothing and other items should be placed in the large blue SVDP donation box located in the parking lot area between the Family Life Center and the Emmaus Chapel. Unfortunately we cannot accept donations of used electrical or electronic items for safety rea-sons, if you leave them we may have to pay to recycle them. Please do not leave donated items near the office entrances as the office is not manned 24/7. Our business hours are Mon-days and Fridays between 10:00am. and 1:00pm. At this time members of the public are still not allowed in the Pantry or SVdP Offices due to the pandemic. Please call 281-242-9149 when you arrive in the parking lot, clearly give your name and phone number and remain in your vehicle until we call you back with instructions. SVdP Staff
