PArish registrAtion

Why is it so important that we register in the parish? Committing to American Martyrs by registering brings many benefits and responsibilities. The parish will be there for you on your faith journey - to provide Masses, Sacraments, education programs, and ministries. Registering in the parish is a statement of your faith and confidence in our parish family and your commitment to our parish mission. The parish will count on you to be an active member and to help and assist in our mission. As parish members, we are all here to help one another on our spiritual journey; we can’t do this alone. Are you registered with us? One way to know if you are registered is if you receive regular communications from us, such as offertory envelopes, newsletters or emails. If you do not receive at least one of these every month, then perhaps you are not registered and you may want to check with the parish office staff. Pick up a registration card at the Parish Center or Rectory or stop by the Welcome Table outside of Mass. Return your registration forms via the collection basket or to the office.

At the parish-wide Pastoral Council meeting a few weeks ago, Pastoral Council members spoke to new initiatives taking place this year. Without using too much computer lingo, one initiative is a new database system that will better connect parish staff with parishioners and parishioners to ministry. This system includes not only data for administrative use, but eventually a new website, mobile app and parishioner portal. As we continue to update each household record, we ask for your patience. Stewardship . . . moving us closer to GodJesus was often asked in the Holy Scriptures about what one must do to gain Heaven. His answers could be summarized in one word - Love. This week readings for the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time reflect two themes: to answer God's call, and to love in a way that is perhaps somewhat foreign to our romanticized concept of love. In today's world the word "love" seems to have been devalued. We often hear, or maybe even say, "I love being at the beach" or "I love skiing." I like both of those things, but I love my spouse and my God. Our readings this weekend remind us of the true meaning of love.In the first reading, Jeremiah, like many of the prophets, expresses some reluctance to his calling. He found it to be burdensome in many ways. Yet, God makes it clear that He has called him to that role, and He fully expects him to fulfill his vocation through love of the Lord. Each of us is also called to a particular role to serve God, the Church, and one another. As hesitant as we may be, it is what God expects of us. Living out God's will is a loving and stewardship way of life.We are probably very familiar with the second reading from St. Paul. It is all about love and we often hear these verses at weddings or similar events, but Paul is addressing a deeper and more unconditional love. St. Paul’s letter was written in Greek and the language has four words for love covering interpersonal love ranging from friendship to romantic to

the ultimate love. The love Paul speaks about is deep; it is a self-giving love which does not expect anything in return. It is pure love which is sacrificial and unconditional. It has little to do with emotion, and everything to do with living out the same love God feels for us. It is stewardship.

This is the love to which Jesus calls us. It is at the core of everything we are and everything we do. We should give of our Treasure, Talent and Time without expectation of return or maybe even thanks. It is what we do as stewards of our God given gifts.

Please contact us, S t e w a r d s h i p @ A m e r i c a n M a r t y r s . o r g with questions or comments on this article or about Stewardship.

stePhen ministry Why am I feeling left out? When we look around, it can seem like everyone else is happy. Other people don’t seem to have the problems that we have. Other people don’t seem to have the money issues, the loneliness, the health challenges, the relationship problems, or the fears that we have. We can feel embarrassed and like we don’t belong. People even tried to make Jesus feel that way in today’s gospel.Every family and every person has struggles. A Stephen Minister can help you put yours in perspective. resPect liFe Ministry California Tries to Revamp Death Penalty Procedures

“After having its death penalty protocols repeatedly ruled unconstitutional, California will once again attempt to rewrite the process to comply with court rulings. The California Catholic Conference will be among many speaking out against the use of the death penalty and the protocols at a hearing next Friday.‘The Golden Rule,’ said Pope Francis in his address to Congress last fall, ‘reminds us of our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development. This conviction has led me, from the beginning of my ministry, to advocate at different levels for the global abolition of the death penalty.’In California’s proposal for new death protocols, not only do the regulations limit the inmate’s access to chaplains and spiritual advisors as the execution draws near but – in an effort to make the killing more humane – the state has switched from a three drug protocol to one drug. The effectiveness of this new single drug protocol is still questionable. The cocktail of deadly drugs are designed to address the growing number of ‘botched’ executions in this country and are one of the many reasons the death penalty is receiving more scrutiny. Increased awareness of the disparate use of the punishment among minorities and stunning revelations that many innocent people are executed are also some of the many reasons this nation is moving away from the death penalty.Nineteen states have already eliminated its use, and just this week the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Florida’s protocols unconstitutional. In addition to the U.S., only four other industrialized nations use the punishment. China puts more people to death than any other nation followed by Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the United States. California holds 746 people on San Quentin’s Death Row. The last execution in the state was January 17, 2006.Consistency in the abhorrence of violence is the hallmark of the Church's teaching on the death penalty. In the Culture of Life and the Death Penalty, the U.S. Bishops also point to the fact that state-sanctioned killing diminishes us all, the application of capital punishment is flawed and inconsistent, and that the state has other ways of punishing criminals.”

“Personal prayer substantiates the beauty and value of our communal prayer, and we grow to understand more deeply the

ways of God within and beyond our faith community.” Community and Growth, Jean Vanier

Christ was born for you, making Love a reality on earth. Christ comes to us today in the sacraments, in our relationships, and in all of nature. God speaks to us of all things in many ways, but is not likely the loudest voice we will hear. In prayer, we listen with our hearts to the ways in which God continually draws each one of us, by love and grace, within and beyond our faith community. What do we do?

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Kik Messenger and the dangers of anonymous messagesSocial media sites are available to anyone with an internet connection (computer, phone, tablet). Your kids may be sharing their lives with complete strangers, and parents should be aware of the sites they use, what they share, and who their friends are.One mobile app, Kik, is regarded as the most dangerous site for internet predators, because users can send messages to anyone with a cellphone, including young children. Kik has no options for parental controls, leaving kids exposed to the entire web. American Martyrs | A Designated Pilgrimage Church for the Year of Mercy

togetHer in Mission 2016Each of us is called to share our gifts in support of the Church. We must first support our own parish, and then our Archdiocese, and then our Church throughout the world. Together in Mission is the most effective way to support ministry outside of our parish boundaries.

The funds we collect will directly benefit more than 250,000 of our Catholic brethren, and ensure that our parishes and schools remain centers of faith and hope for their surrounding communities. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please make a pledge or donation and return by mail or bring to Mass next weekend. If you have not, use one of the special Together in Mission envelopes in the pews, the vestibule or at the Parish Center. If you wish to donate by credit card, you may use our Faith Direct online provider. • Log into your account and add your gift to the Together

in Mission appeal.• If you are not signed up for Faith Direct, this is a perfect

opportunity to do so and make both your Together in Mission gift and your parish gifts through Faith Direct.

• If you would like to make a "one-time gift" by credit card, Faith Direct also allows you to do this in (up to 5) monthly payments. Find the "one-time gift" link on our website.

God bless you for your generous gifts to those in need.

What you Need to Know as we begin the O’Donnell Hall

Construction Project!

The remodel begins

in February.

WHERE DO I FIND THE PARISH OFFICE?• Our Welcome Center offices and staff and our

Scrip Office will be relocated to the temporary trailer next to the Parish House.

• Deacon Fred’s office will be in the Parish House.IS O'DONNELL HALL OPEN?• O’Donnell Hall will be open throughout the

construction; however, the entrance will be through the back doors located behind the kitchen.

WHAT IS CHANGING WITH THE PARKING LOT?• 15th Street will be an Entry Only to the parking lot• Laurel Avenue will be the only Exit from the

parking lot. (You can still enter at Laurel)

We all know that construction comes with temporary disruptions and inconveniences, but our goal is to improve our facilities for the long term.

There will be more updates as our construction date is finalized and we begin.

Thank you for your extra patience and understanding.
