Sandro Dominelli is one of Canada’s most creative, talented and tasteful drummers. Through his continuing success as a much sought-after composer, bandleader, sideman, and producer, he has become an established luminary onthe Canadian music scene.

Sandro’s musical sensibilities have caught the attention of international and local jazz icons alike, who have been inspired to perform or record with his influence. His collaborations include a long list of the veritable who’s who of the jazz scene, such as Joe Lovano, Sheila Jordan, Ernie Watts, Pete Christlieb, Doug Riley, Oliver Jones, Guido Basso, Hugh Fraser, P.J. Perry and Tommy Banks. Additionally, he’s performed and recorded with such modern contemporary artists as Ben Monder, Chris Tarry, Kenny Werner, and Ralph Bowen.

As a composer, Sandro hit the scene in 2003 and since then has received rave reviews and accolades for his work. His first recording as band leader – Café Varze Jazz – went on to receive top honors at the Western Canadian Music Awards as Outstanding Jazz Recording of the Year and was also nominated in 2004 for a JUNO in the ‘Best Traditional Jazz Album of the Year’ category. Sandro’s follow-up album – Meet Me In The Alley – brought him more success’ including a Canadian Music Week award for ‘Favorite Jazz Artist of the Year’.

Supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and Alberta Foundation for the Arts, ‘The Alvo Sessions’ is Sandro’s most recent musical endeavor. Recorded in New York City, the Indian-inspired guitar playing of Rez Abbasi, with the electric bass sounds of Chris Tarry, and Sandro’s thick grooves have all come together to create an unprecedented sound. This is an exciting new project that features Dominelli’s interpretation of Chris Issak’s Wicked Games,

Keith Jarrett’s Personal Mountains, and his own original compositions, ‘The Alvo Sessions’ stays true to the spirit of jazz.

If that all isn’t enough, Sandro is also an established producer, working with jazz, classical, and pop artists alike.

Jane Bunnett & the Spirits of HavanaCanadian soprano saxophonist Jane Bunnett has turned her bands into showcases for the finest talent from Canada, the U.S. and Cuba. She has been nominated for Grammy Awards, won many Juno Awards and most recently was honored with an appointment to the Order of

Canada. Bunnett is known for her creative integrity and improvisational daring. Her ability to embrace and showcase the rhythms and culture of Cuba has been groundbreaking. She has toured the world, bringing her own special sound to many jazz festivals. As an educator, spokesperson and social activist, she remains unafraid to explore uncharted territory in her quest for excellence.

Bunnett’s Cuban connection started in 1982 when a trip to the island with husband Larry Cramer turned her musical world upside down. Everywhere Bunnett and Cramer went they found drummers whose rhythmic complexity liberated the senses, horn players who deployed amazing dexterity in the service of heart stopping lyricism, and pianists who could make any decrepit old upright roar like doom or sing like a heart in love. No fools, they took their horns and played along. “Over the years I’ve developed relationships with some of Cuba’s legendary musicians,” Bunnett recalls. “I’ve had a great opportunity to learn the music in the streets and in the homes of these celebrated talents… and that’s what has fueled my vision.”

Since then, Bunnett has toured internationally and recorded a string of critically lauded albums. Her house in Toronto’s west end has become a home away from home for a growing number of extraordinary young Cuban musicians, many of whom have played in her group, The Spirits of Havana.

Bunnett’s many recordings have explored and combined elements of Cuban roots music with traditional contemporary jazz. Today, Jane Bunnett is a highly recognizable name in World Music and Jazz.

Peripheral Vision is a jazz quartet that showcases the music of bassist Michael Herring and guitarist Don Scott, a synergy of strong musical personalities and complementary writing styles between these long-time collaborators. The punchy and exciting compositions are underpinned by sophisticated techniques while engaging the listener with a grooving, toe-tapping immediacy. You can hear the influences of the classic 1960’s era of jazz - Wayne Shorter, Booker Little, Charles Mingus - mixed with the modern New York scene - Chris Potter, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Dave Douglas, along with hints of Radiohead, reggae and electronica.

Based in Toronto, Herring and Scott have performed with David Binney, Chris Potter, Ken Vandermark, Ab Baars, Kevin Turcotte, Kirk MacDonald, Mike Murley, William Carn, David Braid, Dave Clark (Rheostatics, Gord Downie), Jah Youssouf (Mali, West Africa), Ernest Ranglin, and Brinsely Forde (Aswad). Herring and Scott can be heard together on both of Herring’s Vertigo albums, featuring David Binney - the brand-new Dark Materials and Coniferous Revenge - one of All About Jazz New York’s Top 5 debut albums of 2006 - as well as on Scott’s lauded debut, Out Of Line - “Balancing the cerebral with the visceral... a recommended debut” (John Kelman, All About Jazz)

Peripheral Vision is performing while preparing for the release of their debut album (October 2010), joined by saxophonist Trevor Hogg - “Trevor Hogg’s artistic integrity has built a highly sophisticated musical style devoid of sentimentalism, placing him within the rare category of musicians’ musician.” (David Braid) - and on drums, Nick Fraser - “Fraser not so much plays the drums as hurls himself whole body and soul against skin and metal... truly talented.” (Bill Stunt, CBC Radio).

Run Stop Run is a collective in every sense of the word. Formed as an outlet to perform original, Canadian jazz music, all four members contribute to the band and its music. The group, whose members have performed together in various settings over the past 4 years, was formed out of this musical bond.

The group has four strong musical voices:

William Carn has become one of Canada’s leading jazz trombonists and composers. Besides leading his own acclaimed group, the William Carn Quintet, he has recorded and performed with the likes of Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Randy Brecker, Kenny Wheeler and Rob McConnell.

Guitarist Don Scott has garnered much praise as a player and composer. Having shared the stage with such jazz luminaries as Dave Douglas, Chris Potter and David Binney, Don is also a band leader who recently celebrated the release of his quartet’s first recording, Out of Line.

Jon Maharaj is truly one of Toronto’s busiest bassists. Among his many credits he has worked with Christian Scott, Reg Schwager, Don Thompson, Mike Murley and Dionne Taylor. Jon is also completing his first recording as leader with his trio.

Lastly, Ethan Ardelli has become one of Toronto’s most sought after drummers. He is a member of the award-winning David Virelles Quintet, the Nancy Walker Trio and has recorded with many great artists such as Jane Bunnett and Mark Turner.

Constantly looking for ways to push the boundaries of the jazz genre, Sinistrio has found their own unique niche in the Canadian music scene. Drawing comparisons to groups like Soulive, The Bad Plus, Larry Goldings, and Medeski Martin & Wood, Sinistrio is a groove based B3 organ trio that seamlessly brings together modern jazz and retro soul with a unique kind of texture, tone and richness.

A band characterized by brave experimentation and a full sound, this talented trio featuring Jon May, Steven Fletcher and Jeff Drummond are quick to admit that even though they may not always know where creativity may take them, it is the journey that is in fact half the fun. On stage, it is that same journey that draws in audiences and makes the band so unique. Combine that with original compositions, the odd cover or unique arrangement, and suddenly you have a versatile, insightful band that is selling out concerts, without ever selling out.

Influenced by everything from urban styles and classical music to funk, jazz and good old rock and roll, Sinistrio has all the influences they need to create something that will resonate with every music junkie. Whether you’re a veteran jazz fan or an indie purist, Sinistrio has a way of flipping things around and twisting them inside and out until they have found something that is not only new for them, but new for the listener as well.

Sinistrio joined forces in early 2006 when the three members met at a jazz jam. After playing together they knew something felt

right. Together they planned a group with soul, energy and groove. Drummer Jon May, guitarist Jeff Drummond, and keyboardist Steve Fletcher had a great feeling about the kind of music they were making. They weren’t wrong. Sinistrio toured in 2006 and 2007 honing their musical craft.

On the heels of Sinistrio’s successful self-titled debut album, comes the release of their second album “Ride The Dragon.” This record features more experimental phrasing and exploratory compositions from the trio who make it all look effortless. That same modern, organic, and avant-garde sensibility they started with is still there. Whether you pick up the new album or see them live, as that first note emerges, you’ll find the sound of Sinistrio to be as groovy and as laid back as the artists themselves.

Effendi Jazzlab is a bit of a supergroup, collecting a group of leaders who record for the Montreal-based Effendi label. Together they create an engaging blend of post-bop material that gives each player the opportunity to demonstrate their considerable abilities. Created by label president and the bassist for the group, Alain Bedard, in 2002, Jazzlab has become a seasoned ensemble, flexible and solid, with highly colourful concert performances.

The group has successfully built a genuine identity and a sound based on beautiful improvisations. Jazzlab sounds like a joyful brainstorming session in which the passion of jazz naturally communicates itself to the listeners, with something there for every taste, from the most rigorously written pieces to more freely improvised titles where creativity comes first before virtuosity.

Jazzlab’s current tour is in support of their just-released fourth CD “Octo Portraits”. Each member of the group has created a composition for the disc resulting in contrasting flavours of imagination, curiosity, tradition, daring, abandon, reflection and spirit.

A perfect swing and a capacity to sound like an intimate combo or a powerful big band, help

them to build highly colourful and contrasting atmospheres. All in all, Jazzlab is an excellent example of the ongoing tradition of forward-thinking small big bands.

Based in Edmonton, the ABtrio brings together three of Alberta’s most in-demand performing and recording musicians-Thom Bennett, Dan Davis, and Keith Rempel. This new group is inspired by the open sounding, chordless groups of Sonny Rollins, Joshua Redman, Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker and Joe Lovano’s collaboration with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones. Their material ranges from inventive re-interpretations of standards to modern, original repertoire and high energy groove-based music. The trio’s format is fresh, and their music is accessible and compelling.
