LOWERY’S LINES

Thanks to so many of you for your welcome! It is going to take me some time to get to know your names and faces. I am still unpacking and learning my way around. I want to take a little space here to share things about me that have lead me to this point in my life and this opportunity to serve as your pastor. I was born in St. Louis, Missouri. My dad, Glen, was born and raised there. My late-mom, Grace, was born in Malta, and came to the USA with her family when she was two. They settled in Detroit. In college, my dad studied to be a Redemptorist priest and met my mom’s cousin who was also studying. He introduced my dad to my mom. The rest is history! I have a younger brother, Ryan, who is married to Heather. They have one son – my nephew Sullivan, and have one on the way due to arrive August 8 (C-section). My dad currently lives in Riverview, and his brother, my uncle Jimmy, lives in Wyandotte. I have a great-Uncle Wil on my dad’s side who is the last of his generation in our family, and lives in retirement in the St. Louis, MO area. Last week he celebrated 70 years as a priest, and 75 years as member of the Redemptorist religious order. My mom passed away in 1995 from complications caused by Multiple Sclerosis. Her relatives live all over the Detroit area. My call to the ministerial priesthood is rooted in my experience of Christ through Church community over my entire life. My parents were involved in the local parish. As my mom’s MS progressed, the parish helped us in many ways. I have always felt closest to Christ participating in the life of a parish, in the celebrations of the Liturgy, and in serving others. I was educated K-graduate school in Catholic schools and am grateful to God for all the experiences God has given me as a member of the Church. You may be wondering, “What’s this new guy going to change?” My response is “Nothing, unless it impacts me.” Rather than worry about changing anything, in the weeks and months let’s spend our time and energy getting to know each other. I invite you to schedule a one-on-one appointment with me. If you do, I will have a list of questions to guide our conversation: What makes you happy about our parish? What makes you unhappy about our parish? What would you like to keep about our parish? What would you like to change about our parish? Where do you think our parish should go over the next few years? Your answers will help me both learn about you and about our parish community. I invite anyone who wants to make an appointment with me for any reason to do so – no advanced explanations needed. I am here for you and with you. Please contact the parish office to schedule a time.

Peace, Fr. Shaun

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY Deuteronomy 30:10-14 The events of this reading take place as the Israelites are camped on the shore of the Jordan River, ready to enter the Promised Land. Moses makes it clear to the people that they are expected to remain faithful to the Lord after they have settled in their new land.

Colossians 1:15-20 Today this letter responds to a widespread belief that God ruled the world through the mediation of angels who were given their own powers. The author quotes an earlier Christian hymn that emphasizes Jesus is the one and only mediator between God and the world.

Luke 10:25-37 Today’s gospel reading presents us with one of our most treasured parables, the story of the Good Samaritan. Yet, it is not heeded. It is difficult to comprehend, as advanced as we are, how the horror of ethnic cleansing is still considered justifi-able by some, or how great cities cannot find room for their homeless. Our best hope seems to be to emphasize the lesson of this parable on the individu-al level, as it is told.

Reflect: How do you see yourself as a Good Samaritan?

At St. Mary Magdalen, we collect school supplies from the list provided by LESA and deliver them to one of the designated drop-off points. If you’d like to make a donation for this project please take an apple tag/tags with items needed from the easel located in the Gathering Area. The apples will be available beginning on July 6/7. All items must be turned in on or before July 28. Thank you for your support of this wonderful project!
