Conditional formatting is used on the puzzle to indicate correct or incorrect letters in a cell.

To illustrate conditional formatting look at the red box below this line. If you type the letter A,

lower case or capital, the letter will turn blue when you press enter. Try any other letter and

the letter will turn red after you press enter. Look at the blue box. Determine which letter goes there.

If you need a clue, click on the blue box, select the Format menu then select Conditional Formatting to see.

The image below shows how I formatted the red box. Select the Format button to see color choices

OK, now it's your turn. In the green box, set conditional formatting so that X is the proper choice

Shortcut!!!To save some steps, after formatting one letter, use format painter to copy the

formatting of the letter and transfer it to all other letters. I know, I know, be patient!

Click on a red letter (not incorrect, but the formatting is wrong). Next click on

the Format menu and select Conditional formatting.

The cells on the conditional formatting sheet were set, by default, so the letter are displayed

in the bottom left corner of the cell, but on the crossword puzzle page the letters are in the

center of the cell. That is done from the format menu also. For example, type B in the orange box

The letter should be green, unless you typed something other than B. But the letter should also be in the

middle of the box. For a crossword puzzle that alignment looks more pleasing. To format alignment

click on a cell, select Format, then select Cells, then the Alignment tab. I selected

center from both the Horizontal and Vertical boxes. Ready for your assignment? In the purple box

set conditional formatting so that the letter X is displayed in green, and any other letter is displayed in red.

Also set formatting so that the letter will be centered vertically and horizontally, and make the font 14 pt
