Installation PreparationInstalling the NSQ412 is easy as long as you do a little planning before starting. Locate each station within ten feet ofan a. c. power outlet and seven feet of the telephone jacks. The maximum amount of telephone wire that can bebetween two stations is 600 feet.

IMPORTANT: Taking full advantage of the system features requires that the telephone number connected to Line 1 bethe same on all stations. If this is not done, the Privacy, Intercom, Page and Transfer will not work properly. In addition,it is strongly recommended that no other devices operate on Line 1 besides the NSQ412 stations. Any interference on itcan degrade the system performance. The system can be used on a DLS line if either: 1) Line 1 is not the DSL line; or2) Line 1 wiring connected to all stations is behind the DSL filter port.

There are many different wiring configurations that a telephone jack can have. The station will support both a home run(the phone line is run from a connecting block to each station) and daisy chain (the phone line is run from one phone tothe next) wiring configuration. Many older homes and businesses have just one telephone line on each jack. Newerhomes and businesses typically have two or three lines per jack. You must identify how your telephone jacks are wiredbefore connecting them to the NSQ412. If you cannot determine this, call your telephone service provider for assis-tance.

It is a good idea to document the phone wiring for each NSQ412 location. This can be done using the following worksheet. Record the telephone number for each line and the jack it is found on for each station.

NSQ412 Four-Line Caller ID Telephone Owner’s Manual 10

Page 14: Four-Line Caller ID Telephone

For example, stations 11, 12 and 13 will have telephone numbers 555-1111 on Line 1, and 555-2222 on Line 2. Station 11 and 12 willhave 555-3333 on Line 3. Station 11 will have 555-4444 on line 4. Stations 12 and 13 will have 555-5555 on line 4. Station 13 will have555-4444 on line 3. At station 11’s location, each telephone number has a separate jack. At station 12’s location, lines 1 and 2 share onejack and lines 3 and 4 share another jack. At station 13’s location, lines 1 and 2 share one jack while line 3 and line 4 each have sepa-rate jacks. The work sheet would be filled out as follows:

Station Number111213141516171819202122

Line 1/Jack Line 2/Jack Line 3/Jack Line 4/Jack

Station Number111213

Line 4/Jack555-4444/jack 4555-5555/jack 2555-5555/jack 3

Each station has four telephone line jacks located on the base cabinet’s side. The first jack is for telephone lines 1 and 2. Thesecond jack is for telephone lines 3 and 4. Jack 3 and jack 4 are Data jacks used for connecting a modem or fax machine to thetelephone network through the NSQ412.

Setting Up the Caller ID Operation

Different telephone companies offer dif-ferent dialing plans, which may or maynot require the user to dial a “1” whendialing toll calls. Some areas require 7-digit dialing for local calls while otherareas require 10-digits.

The NSQ412 can be programmed towork in all of these areas. Each stationprovides one programmable home areacode and five programmable local areacodes. These programmable area codeswill determine how a Caller ID number isdisplayed, stored and dialed. When thecalling number originates from the areacode that matches the one programmedinto the Home Area Code, the LCD willdisplay and dial only the local, 7-digitcalling number. For example:

When the calling number originates fromthe area code that matches one pro-grammed into a Local Area Code, theLCD will display and dial the regional,10-digit number (area code + local 7-digitnumber). For example:

When the calling number does not origi-nate from any of the programmed areacodes, the LCD will display the actualnumber when the calling number is lessthan 10-digits long. For example:

See the section Area CodeProgramming to set up the station forproper Caller ID display.

MESSAGE WAITING AND NEWCID INDICATION

The MSG WAIT/NEW CID LED will illu-minate steady when new, unviewedCaller ID entries have been received. Ifyou have a voicemail service with yourlocal telephone company, the indicatorwill flash to alert you to check for newvoicemail messages.

The NSQ412’s message waiting detec-tion will recognize the presence of newVoicemail left in a telephone company’smailbox (subscribed to by the user). Thisis done by detecting stutter dial tone andalso by detecting a FSK Visual MessageWaiting Indicator On signal, both ofwhich are provided by the telephonecompany. The display of each station willshow each line that has detected thepresence of a voicemail. For example, the LCD will display:

"12/26 12:08P" The current time."EXT 12" The station number of

this phone is 12.“CID: 100/198” 100 new Caller ID

messages, and 198total Caller ID mes-sages.

“MSGW-134” CO lines 1, 3 and 4 have messages wait-ing.

The telephone will recognize when newvoicemails no longer exist. This isaccomplished by detecting the absenceof stutter dial tone (continuous dial tone)and also by detecting a FSK VisualMessage Waiting Indicator Off signal, both of which are provided by the tele-phone company. The display shallremove the message waiting indicationfor each line, which no longer has avoicemail. When no voicemails are onany line, the MSG WAIT/NEW CID LEDshall cease to flash.

If you are in an area where an FSK is notavailable:

1. The system will check your line forstutter dial tone every time you hang upor each time a call goes unanswered.

The station will indicate a message iswaiting when there is stutter dial tone.

2. You may experience some delay inseeing the message waiting indicationturn off when no new messages are inthe voicemail box. This is due to regula-tory operation requirements and does notindicate a problem with the station.

NOTE: The message indicators may notbe activated or deactivated under certainconditions. For example, when youretrieve messages from an outsidephone (not your own telephone number),they may not be canceled when youreturn home. If you experience this, pickup the handset for several seconds andhang up. The message indicators will goout in a short time.

The message indicators can be reset toon or off for each line or all lines in pro-gramming mode.
