DOUBLE DUTYIN THE BARREN STRETCH OF WINTER, CLIENTS EXPERIENCE THE GRIM EFFECTS OF THE SEASON: DRY, CHAPPED HANDS AND CRACKED CUTICLES IN DESPERATE NEED OF HYDRATION. But while requesting these services at their favorite salon, they often overlook the protective anti-aging services that they should be availing themselves throughout the year. “Some may think that the summer is a more appropriate (time to offer the service),” says Elaine Watson, vice president of marketing and sales for Star Nail International. “However, the sun isn’t the only danger to our skin. The danger to our skin is really year round and mainly caused by sun exposure or tanning.”

Some techs may be hesitant to add anti-aging services to their existing lineup, but with a generation of aging baby boom-ers, the pool of interested clients is large. “Specialty services are always a great addition to your menu,” notes Ami McClure, owner of ProFiles in Cape Coral, Florida. “Not only can you charge more for these services, but it also creates a niche clientele and sets you apart from your competition.”

She recommends demonstrating the services—and their benefits—for free the first time, and then doing add-on pricing for future appointments. “I try to keep it simple when it comes to pricing,” she explains. “I base everything on time. If an add-on takes an extra 15 minutes, I add $15. If it takes 30 minutes, I charge $30.”

Jeffi Girgenti, owner of Nail Cafe in Encino, California, offers her clients a hydrating glycerin mask as part of her standard pedicure service, and as a $5 add-on for manicures. “I’ve found that it’s made a huge difference for clients,” she explains. Girgenti is wary of offering add-ons with retinol because of the potential for interac-tion with medications. “Clients don’t always know what they can and can’t do,” she explains, noting that she’d hate for a client to get a chemical burn. To alleviate that concern, she recom-mends using products that gently plump and refresh skin, such as

shea butter, glyc-erin and natural

oils, such as avocado.

A POUND OF PREVENTIONWE’VE ALL HEARD THE MANTRA: BY THE TIME YOU CAN SEE THAT YOUR SKIN IS AGING, IT’S ALREADY SUSTAINED A LOT OF DAMAGE. That’s why it’s so important to educate your clients about the benefits of anti-aging treatments before their hands show the ill effects of time.

“Typically, different age groups focus on different aspects of service,” Watson says. “While a teenager or even a young client in her 20s might not be focused on anti-aging yet, women in their 30s and above certainly focus more on the ap-pearance of the skin, as well as her nails. So, it’s very important that a tech or business owner add these types of services to attract those ages.” Live in an area frequented by mature clients? Time to think about adding these services to your menu! Girgenti says that while all of her clients receive the benefits of the hydrating mask during their pedicure services, she’s noticed that clients 45 and older also tend to request the treatment for their hands.

Education can help keep your clients’ skin looking supple and young, as well. “Anti-aging only goes so far,” Girgenti says. “People need to drink water.” She also points out that clients in different regions have different needs. The arid weather of the Southwest tends to leave clients with parched skin, while the biting winters and humid summers of the Midwest leave two extremes for clients to battle.

In Florida, McClure says sunscreen is one of the main ingredients she looks for when adding products to an anti-aging service. “When people apply sunscreen, they usually skip the hands for whatever reason,” she points out. “But if you think about it, the tops of the hands and feet get more sun than your face. Sun damage is the biggest con-tributor to skin prematurely aging. It causes freckling and uneven skin tones, deep wrinkling and, worst of all, skin cancer.”

There are specific ingredients that you can look for that lend themselves to particular aging concerns. For instance, “If you are looking to lighten age spots,” Watson says, “a skin lightening product like Cuccio Lemon Skin Lightening Serum containing kojic acid along with other lemon extracts will gently lighten spots over time.” Ingredients that help with exfoliation, detoxification and prevention are in-cluded in a plethora of products to address additional areas of concern.
