Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning

HVAC module: Components•EvaporatorCore•HeaterCore•Optional:Ionizer,CO2 Sensor and Fragrance Module•Controlheadintegratedtoasystemfor traditional A/C or heat pump architectures

The HVAC module is the central air distribution component in an automobile’s air conditioning system. It takes filtered outside air and controls the airflow rate, air temperature and humidity. By delivering this conditioned air to outlets, the module is able to rapidly cool, heat and dehumidify the vehicle’s cabin environment. To address

the demands of today’s marketplace, Hanon Systems applies its long history of HVAC design and manufacturing to offer a suite of solutions that satisfies an increasing range of requirements by global automakers to optimize performance, improve fuel efficiency and deliver the occupant’s sense of comfort and cleanliness.

Triple Zone HVACHanon Systems’ award-winning triple-zone HVAC is a single module that enables vehicle occupants to independently control the temperature, direction and strengthofairflowintheirimmediateproximityinorderto create an individualized cabin comfort experience for the driver, front seat and rear passengers. Its unique and compact design reduces overall weight and material cost by up to 18 percent compared to other multi-zone solutions, and improves packaging in the engine compartment to enable more available space in the vehicle cabin.

Flat HVACDesigned to make the best use of space in the engine compartment, this revolutionary design can be placedinthefloorpanel, underseatsoratthesideof the vehicle. By completely re-designing the HVAC form, vehicle designers can now explore new ways to create additional space in the vehicle cabin to create a more comfortable experience for passengers.

Sliding Door HVACThis innovative solution reduces the overall size and weight of the HVAC by integrating multiple revolving doors that control the temperature and direction. By reducing the HVAC installation space, a larger buffer space can be created to enhance the frontal crush zone improving safety in the event of vehicle impact.

It is important to effectively control engine temperature to enhance the operability and efficiency of vehicles, and the powertrain cooling system serves three important functions. These consist of maintaining an optimal temperature of the engine for long life and efficient operation;

removing excess heat from sources that generate heat; or by bringing the air/fuel charge to an optimal operating condition to improve fuel efficiency and performance. Hanon Systems offers a wide range of powertrain cooling solutions designed to support virtually all automotive applications.

Cooling moduleMounted to the front of the engine, the cooling module is a single unit that can consist of a radiator, condenser, fan and shroud, and charge air cooler. The radiator uses external air to provide the engine with coolant, while the condenser uses air cooling to reduce the high temperature and pressurized refrigerant it receives from the A/C compressor. A fan and shroud is combined with the radiator and condenser, and is used at low speeds to force air across these two aluminum heat exchangers. When coupled with Hanon Systems’ Automotive News PACE Award winning wavy blade fan design, thecoolingmodulecanmaximizeairflowandreduce operational noise.

Charge Air CoolersIn the case of diesel engines, the cooling module also can contain a charge air cooler that allows more fuel to be provided in the same air volume. Hanon also has extensive experience using engine-mounted or manifold-inserted water charge air coolers to deliver the same engine downsizing opportunity. When a water charge air coolers is applied, the coolant used to increase the density of the air/fuel mixture can be exchanged with a low temperature radiator as part of the cooling module or mounted separately in the wheel arches, as an example.

Transmission SolutionsIn an effort to minimize energy build-up in transmissions, Hanon Systems offers a collection of air/oil and water/oil solutions to reduce the size of main radiators and deliver longer life to both oil and transmissions alike.

The compressor is a critical component of a vehicle’s air conditioning system, which pressurizes and circulates refrigerant at a high temperature and pressure to the condenser. Hanon Systems has decades of experience developing and

manufacturing compressors for the automotive industry. With a portfolio of three distinct types of eco-friendly and highly-efficient compressors – variable, electric and fixed rotary suction – the company is uniquely positioned to support nearly any vehicle application.

Variable Swashplate Compressor (HV)Hanon Systems offers a modular family of variable swashplate compressors in a full range of displacements in clutched and clutch-less designs. The architecture utilizes a common piston and shaft, as well as a variety ofenhanceddesignfeaturestoimproveefficiency, capacity and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

Electric Compressor (HES)The electric compressor features a durable scroll design controlled by an on-board electric motor and integrated power electronics. Designed for electric and hybrid electric (EV/HEV) vehicle, and heat pump applications, the electric compressor operates independently, enabling the cabin to be cooled even when the engine is off.

Fixed rotary Suction Compressor (HrS)Arotarysuctioncompressorhasafixeddisplacementswashplate design that draws refrigerant through the center shaft and delivers better fuel economy by creating less suction loss compared to a traditional suction valve. The solution from Hanon Systems is offered in a wide range of displacements and features designedtoimprovecoefficientofperformance(COP)and reliability.

Legislation continues to drive global automakers to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy with the introduction of stringent standards on vehicle manufacturers in order to sell vehicles in certain markets. Hanon Systems offers a portfolio of

thermal and emissions solutions that are specifically designed to help automakers meet these legislative challenges with conventional powertrains, while also supporting the growing need for alternative powertrain solutions.

Exhaust Gas recirculation (EGr)This is an eco-friendly, emission reduction and fuel economy technology. By design, it cools and recirculates exhaust gas before it is re-introduced to the engine to lower the combustion temperature. In a diesel engine, a lower combustion temperature meanslessharmfuloxidesofnitrogen(NOx)areemitted from the tailpipe. When applied to gasoline direct injection engines, the lower combustion temperature reduces knock, which eliminates the need to use fuel to cool and improves fuel economy and reducingcarbondioxide(CO2) emissions. Hanon Systems’ EGR solutions – which combine EGR coolers, valves and bypass valves – can be assembled into compact modules saving space and assembly operations. With the latest diesel regulations requiring a multi-system approach to reduce emissions, Hanon Systems’ EGR expertise in high and low pressure systems can be easily combined with SelectiveCatalyticReduction(SCR)orLeanNOxTrap(LNT) after-treatment systems to ensure compliance with ever stricter regulations.

Electronic Coolant PumpElectronic coolant pumps are a key component to supply coolant on-demand for critical thermal management systems. By providing coolant only as required, electronic coolant pumps reduce fuel consumption, friction loss and emissions. Hanon Systems offers electronic coolant pumpsdesignedspecificallyforboostedcombustionengines, start/stop technology, and electric and hybrid electric (EV/HEV) and fuel cell vehicles. These pumps support a wide range of next generation thermal management systems where an engine accessory drive belt may not be available, including cooling of batteries, DC/DC converters and power electronics. Pumpefficiencyplaysanimportantroleintheenergymanagement of vehicles, especially with electric and hybrid vehicles. Hanon Systems has developed a range ofhighefficiencyboostpumpsthatcanoperateathigherspeedsforshortperiodswhenextracoolantflowis required. These boost pumps operate on-demand toensureefficientpumpoperationtominimizeenergyconsumption and, in some cases, can reduce the number of pumps required in a system.

Electronic Coolant ValvesMulti-port electronic coolant valves route coolant in various loops of the cooling circuit, depending on need. Traditional solenoid valves consume energy at all times, which impacts vehicle energy consumption. Hanon Systems offers electronic coolant valves that use DC motor drives to ensure energy is only consumed when operating the valve. These valves use an innovative ball valve concept that delivers discreteflowcontrolofcoolantandcanbedesignedwithuptofiveuniqueportconfigurations.Theinnovativeballconceptalsocanbestackedtoaddressmorecomplexflowcontrolsolutions, which reduces the number of DC motor actuators for further savings in energy consumption. Hanon Systems offers electronic coolant valves designed for naturally aspirated and boosted combustion engines, stop-start technology, electric and hybrid electric (EV/HEV) and fuel cell vehicles. These support a wide range of next generation thermal management systems, including cooling of batteries, DC/DC converters and power electronics. When combined with Hanon Systems’ electronic coolant pumps and extensive range of heat exchangers, the company’s system capability ensures a fully optimized thermal management solution.

The era of hybrid and electric automobiles that converges with nature is here. Global automotive manufacturers are concentrating efforts on developing eco-friendly vehicles that are equipped with high performance and high efficiency parts. Hanon Systems is well-equipped with innovative thermal and energy management solutions to lead this effort to meet customer requirements.

Heat Pump SystemHanon Systems offers an award winning heat pump system, whichisdesignedtosignificantlyreducepowerconsumption from heating battery-powered vehicles including electric vehicles. Unlike a conventional electric heater, the heat pump draws heat from ambient air, thereby reducing power consumption. This revolutionary design also utilizes the waste heat recycled from the vehicle’s motor and inverter as an additional heat source to support the vehicle’s heating system. This feature can help meet the desired cabin temperature, even in challenging sub-zero temperatures, to further extend the vehicle’s drive range by decreasing power drain on the battery. Hanon Systems received the prestigious IR52 Jang Young-Shil Award in 2015 for this breakthrough technology.

HV iCooL™HViCOOL™isarevolutionaryconceptthatcombinesthree separate air conditioning components – HVAC, compressor and condenser – into a single module. This self-contained unit can be moved anywhere in the vehicle, including under the seats or in the engine compartment. The result is an HVAC-free cockpit that enables ultimate styling freedom and an improved cabin comfort experience for vehicle occupants.

Battery Thermal managementHanon Systems is at the forefront delivering solutions to meet battery thermal management requirements. Contact heat exchangers conduct heat away from battery cells for precise temperature control in electric and hybrid vehicles. These devices are designed specificallyforlithium-ionbatteries,andcanimprovebattery output and prevent premature aging. A battery chiller is required when a coolant-based battery thermal management system is used. This compact plate-to-plate heat exchanger transfers heat from the coolant to the refrigerant to provide adequate capacity during battery fast-charging mode. Hanon Systems also provides heat exchanger solutions for sensors, electronics, power inverters and other heat management tasks using plate or tube-type contact coolers.
