Book Club Monday, September 16th after the 12:05 p.m. Mass Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis The SJB book club will meet in the family center after the 12:05 Mass to discuss Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis. In this book, originally aired as a series of radio broadcasts in 1943, Lewis explores the common ground upon which all Christians stand together: original sin, the transcendent Creator God, and the divinity of Jesus as well as his atonement and bodily resurrection. Pastor’s Column LISTEN TO JESUS AND THE PROPHETS

Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to persecute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Testament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured opposition from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of his time and ours of the divisions that his words would cause, showing himself to be the prophet of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and dilemmas in light of Jesus’ teachings and warnings, and seek to understand all that he has proclaimed and taught about what will happen if we fail to listen.

18th ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 MEMORIAL MASS 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 11th at Hedwig Church. Bishop Malooly will be the main celebrant in Remembrance of all those who lost their lives on 9/11. All are welcome to join us.

The 12:05 Mass at St. Joseph on the Brandywine will be celebrated for the intentions of victims & families of 9/11.

The mass intention book is now open. Personal intentions may be arranged for masses to be celebrated at St. Joseph on the Brandywine throughout the 2020. One mass each Sunday is reserved for the people of the parish. Please stop by the parish office.

Bring Your Loved One Back to the Catholic Faith Please join us in praying for our families and friends on the Feast of St. Monica on Tuesday, August 27th at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church. We will be praying together to bring back all those who have fallen away from the Church at our special Devotional Event. Holy Hour with Rosary will begin at 5:00PM, and Mass will begin at 6:00PM. Come fill out a Tear Drop card for your loved ones and all who have fallen away from the church. All are welcome and please stay for light refreshments after Mass. The June Basket for Babies was presented in early July to an extremely grateful, young mother from Birthright. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the

The music ministry of SJOB welcomes new members to participate as choir members, cantors, or instrumentalists in creating music for liturgy and special concerts through the academic year. Adult

choir rehearsals are held regularly on Thursday evenings, 7:15-9:15 in the church choir loft. Rehearsals resume September 5. Interested new members should contact Mary Ellen Schauber, director of choirs, or Michael Marinelli, director of music and liturgy. Contact information is on the cover of the bulletin. Youth choir rehearsals resume on Thursday evenings from 6:15-7:00 in the Family Center, beginning September 12. Children in grades 2 through 9 are welcomed to participate. Weekly rehearsals can be somewhat flexible. Youth choir sings at the 9:00 AM mass once a month, and participate in special concerts with the parish. Sharing our Bounty Food Pantry Collection- last Sunday of August Your heartfelt generosity in giving to the poor is very much appreciated by St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry at St. Catherine of Siena. Please continue to donate your gifts of food in the summer months. Suggested items are: whole grain breakfast cereals, old fashioned oats, add water pancake mix, coffee, tea, low fat evaporated milk, flour, protein bars, dried fruits, nuts, peanut butter, jelly, low sodium hearty soups, canned meats and fish, rice and beans, pasta and crushed or diced tomatoes, canned lite fruit, natural low sugar applesauce, canned low sodium vegetables, olive oil or canola oil, bar soap, shampoo, toilet paper and toothpaste. Our next collection is August 24th & 25th . CYM Fall Sports registration is open. There is a team for every young athlete. St. Joseph on the Brandywine parish sponsors basketball only. Being Catholic Today

As members of the Catholic Church in today’s world, believers are called upon to share their faith with the wider community. As we follow in the footsteps of Christ, we witness to our faith in how we raise our children, how we interact with friends, family and coworkers, and how we engage in modern culture. Through the centuries, no church has done more to care for our brothers and sisters in need than the Catholic Church.

The beginning of Catholic belief is God’s revelation.

We believe that God loves us and desires to be in

relationship with his creation. We believe that God’s

reveals himself in numerous ways, but particularly

through the revelation of his Word, which comes to us

in two forms – Sacred Scripture (written) and

Tradition (unwritten). The ultimate sign of God’s

revelation is the Incarnation – God becoming human

in Jesus Christ. The Incarnation is the ultimate sign

of God’s love for God’s people.

Catholics believe in the Holy Trinity, God revealed as

three divine persons of one nature: Father, Son and

Holy Spirit. The Church was founded by Christ,

through the power of the Holy Spirit, and carried

forward through the ages by the Apostolic Tradition.

The Paschal Mystery – the crucifixion, death and

resurrection of Jesus Christ – is the central mystery

of every liturgical celebration, most especially the

Mass, which is the “source and summit” of our lives

as Catholics.

The Mass is the central, binding celebration of the

Church. We live out the sacramental life most fully in

community. Christ calls us to the forgiveness of sins

and we recognize the Sacrament of Reconciliation as a

way to repair sin and return to right relationship with

God, ourselves and others. We are nourished and fed

by the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

The presence of the Risen Christ is revealed

throughout the sacred liturgy and in the community

gathered as the Body of Christ, in the Word, in the

Presider, and most especially in the Eucharist (the

Body and Blood of Jesus).

As the living Body of Christ, Catholics are called to

live a “countercultural” life. We are called to serve

one another, just as Jesus served. We stand up for our

faith and beliefs even if this means suffering in the

world. The Catholic social teachings call us to care

especially for the dignity of the human person – from

the moment of conception to the end of natural life.

We are called to tend to the poor, care for our

environment, ensure just working conditions for all

and work towards an economic system that allows for

equal treatment of people.

We believe that we are united with all of the angels and

saints, especially Mary, the Mother of God, and we model

on lives on their holy example. We pray to Mary and all the

saints to intercede for us. Personal and communal prayer is

a hallmark of the Catholic faith. We pray to strengthen our

relationship with God and to grow in faith and love. We are

united with all believers throughout the world – the

universal Church – each week as we gather for communal

prayer, the Mass.
