This is an introductory level course based on Elder Abuse Ontario’s Core Curriculum. The course is presented in partnership with the Trent Centre for Aging & Society and it aligns with the goals of Ontario’s Strategy to Combat Elder Abuse and provides fundamental continuing education to enhance the capacity of those working with older adults. It will reflect provincial, national and international best practices. The course will help professionals who interact with seniors create/maintain an environment of safety and trust in which seniors live with dignity and respect. The course has been initiated to assist in building the capacity of those working with older adults to identify and respond to elder abuse and is based on the Ontario and Canadian government’s laws and elder abuse prevention strategies and best practices. LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Develop an understanding of the multifaceted nature of elder abuse 2. Recognize forms and indicators of elder abuse 3. Detect risk factors that predispose seniors to abuse in community, retirement homes and long-term care homes 4. Identify roles and responsibilities of incident reporting of elder abuse and relevant legislation 5. Engage and interact with seniors at-risk of or experiencing abuse, to promote empowerment 6. Provide supportive care/service through community based solutions 7. Work as a team to support seniors-at-risk through identifying and implementing intervention strategies 8. Work with communities to support the development of prevention strategies 9. Understand the capacity of provincial agencies and community services that support and respond to elder abuse Students are expected to be committed to the learning process and are encouraged to discuss any questions or concerns about course material, requirements and specific learning needs with the Instructor.
