Page 2: Foundations of Catholic Health 2014 Annual Report

The Foundations of Catholic Health are pleased to present our 2014 annual report, offering a look at the many ways our hospitals, health centers, and home and community based services have touched people’s lives during the past year.

The Foundations take pride in helping to further the Catholic Health mission to reveal the healing love of Jesus to those in need. Acting as faithful stewards of the generous gifts of our supporters, the Foundations help guide the funding of initiatives that make better

healthcare possible for more people throughout Western New York.

The diverse stories in this report are real-life examples of our healthcare ministry at work. A new ambulatory surgery unit brings care closer to the community. A special fund helps improve the quality of life for elderly patients at home. Numerous capital investments are made possible to advance surgical services in state-of-the-art facilities. These are just a few examples of how your support makes a difference in the care for thousands of people in our community, particularly the poor and underserved.

Giving to any of our Foundations -- Continuing & Home Care Foundation, Kenmore Mercy Foundation, Mercy Hospital Foundation and Sisters Hospital Foundation -- translates into caring. Please consider making a gift. You will see how it makes a difference, every day, right here in Western New York.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who helps the Foundations of Catholic Health in their important work – our Board Members, generous donors, volunteers, physicians, nurses and associates. We are grateful for the community’s support of the many aspects of exceptional healthcare ministry at Catholic Health.

ADDED CONVENIENCE.Ambulatory surgery has transformed the way modern healthcare is delivered, making outpatient surgeries more convenient for the patient, while reducing hospital stays and costs.

The St. Joseph Campus of Sisters of Charity Hospital is building on that trend, having recently transformed over 10,000 square feet of space at the hospital into a state-of-the-art Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU).

Dedicated in June of 2014, the new unit offers patients the comfort and convenience of having surgeries and procedures performed in an outpatient setting. It replaces a free-standing Ambulatory Surgery Center in Williamsville, which the hospital had been leasing, with a modern, new unit within the hospital. From placing the ASU in a convenient and central location to creating an even better patient experience, the benefits are far-reaching.

“Everything we have done in this renovation has centered on what is best for the patient,” says Martin Boryszak, Chief Operat-ing Officer for Sisters Hospital. “From the latest technologies to private pre- and post-surgery rooms, the ASU was designed to enhance the patient experience.”

HANDLED WITH CAREDonor Spotlight: Maria Madden

It felt like the flu. Her young son, Tristan, was also sick.

“Probably just something he brought home from school,” thought Maria Madden, who lives in Buffalo’s Central Park neighborhood with her husband and son.

But Maria continued to feel worse and within a week she was rushed by ambulance from her home to Sisters Hospital. It was the beginning of a frightening journey that would go from a medically induced coma that lasted three weeks, to a recovery that even doctors described as miraculous.

“The doctors and nurses at Sisters not only saved my life, they saved my quality of life,” Maria says. “The care they provided, including the littlest things, allowed me to get better and return quicker to normal living.”

With the help of a matching grant from Tim’s employer, Maria and her husband Tim established a dedicated fund through the Sisters Hospital Foundation to help patients and their families, as well as the staff in the ICU. Established in the summer of 2014, the Maria Madden Fund supports the Sisters Hospital ICU and the care of patients with respiratory illnesses.

CORPORATE CHALLENGEDonor Spotlight: Moog Space & Defense Group

The generous physicians at Mercy Hospital partner with Mercy Hospital Foundation leadership each year to raise money for needed resources at the hospital. In just two years, this annual effort has tripled the amount of money raised. In 2014, the campaign raised $110,780 from individual charitable gifts and donations.

In 2013, Moog, an international manufacturer of motion control products headquartered in Elma, NY, pledged $200,000 – $50,000 annually for four years – to encourage physician support for the annual campaign.

According to Maureen Athoe, vice president and general manager of the Moog Space & Defense Group, the company’s leadership recognizes the important role Mercy Hospital plays in the quality of life for Moog employees. The company pledge is a show of support and appreciation.

“We all have a part in making sure quality healthcare institutions such as Mercy Hospital are available, not just for Moog employees, but for everyone in the community,” Athoe says.

CENTER OF ATTENTIONThe Mercy Hospital of Buffalo Stroke Center is consistently rising to the challenge of providing cutting edge care and services for stroke patients and their families in our community. Now, thanks to help from the Mercy Hospital Foundation, the Center is taking care a step further with an enhancement project begun in 2014.

To help ensure that the hospital stays at the forefront of stroke care, Mercy Hospital Foundation helped raise nearly $300,000 in 2014 to enhance the nursing station and patient care areas in the Stroke Center. The project includes making more efficient use of space, improving the workflow for medical staff, expand-ing computer access, and creating an educational area for the patients and families. The project also includes aesthetic updates to patient rooms and hallways.

In 2013, Mercy Hospital was named a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, the nation’s leading accrediting agency for hospitals and healthcare providers.

“We are very proud to meet those standards as a recognized, regional stroke center, with support from the Mercy Hospital Foundation to help ensure the continued growth of our program,” explains C.J. Urlaub, president and CEO of Mercy Hospital.

SURGICAL ADVANCEMENTSKenmore Mercy Hospital has earned a reputation for excellence in many different surgical services, from joint replacement, ortho-pedics and spine surgery, to neurosurgery and gastrointestinal procedures.

Of course, it takes a lot to achieve and continually enhance the level of success Kenmore Mercy has attained as a leader in surgical services. The skill and expertise of the physicians, the commitment and dedication of nurses and staff, and a lot of capital investment, all contribute to that success.

Thanks to a strong working partnership between the Kenmore Mercy Hospital Foundation and the hospital itself, the challenge of keeping up with and investing in the latest medical technolo-gies is a little less daunting. In 2014, the Foundation provided key financial support for surgery-related equipment and invest-ments.

“The investments we have made set a strong foundation for the future of Kenmore Mercy Hospital,” says James Millard, presi-dent and CEO of the hospital. “In the same way, we are grateful to have a strong Foundation as our partner in progress moving forward.”

DOUBLING UPDonor Spotlight: Anthony B. H. Habib

Anthony B. H. Habib is president of the Kenmore Mercy Foundation Board of Trustees and has been a member of the Board since 2002.

During that time, he and his family have also been among the hospital’s strongest financial supporters, donating year after year and helping to foster significant growth for the Founda-tion.

“Kenmore Mercy is near and dear to our family’s heart and we believe in the great work that the physicians, associates and administration are doing,” he says. “It is a wonderful

organization that we are proud to give our continued support.”

Habib points out the excellent rapport between the Foundation board and the Kenmore Mercy Hospital ad-ministration, and credits his fellow board members for the fundraising success. “We have a very active board with members who get involved and help us continue to move the needle in fundraising every year.”

“Kenmore Mercy is simply a great hospital,” Habib concludes. “While it has made many advances in technology and medical services, it still has the feel of a hometown hospital, caring for patients as if they were family.”

EXTRA EFFORTSDonor Spotlight: Sister Connie McGregor & Rev. Jean O’Brien

Sister Connie travels across Erie and Niagara counties, visiting as many as five patients a day in their homes to offer encouragement, spiritual comfort and emotional support. It is on the frontlines of home care where Sister Connie sees the needs of patients from every walk of life, every religious denomination, and every level of care.

Catholic Health’s Home and Community Based Care patients receive exceptional care, including physical, occupational and speech therapies, to help them maintain their

independence at home following a hospital stay or medical issue.

“There are so many ways that Home and Community Based Care touches people’s lives, caring for them in mind, body and spirit,” she explains.

Reverend Jean O’Brien is also a board certified chaplain with Home and Community Based Care. She emphasizes the team effort that goes into providing the extras, from the support of the president and CEO, Joyce Markiewicz, to the clinicians and physical and occupational therapists who work with the patients.

MAKING CONNECTIONSIt may be a familiar old song. A favorite program from the days of black & white TV. Perhaps some beautiful nature photography.

Catholic Health’s Long-Term Care facilities strive to make residents feel as much at home as possible by keeping them connected with the things that have always brought enjoyment to their lives.

Now, with the help of the Continuing & Home Care Foundation, residents can connect with these things even more.

The Foundation provided over $32,000 in donated funds for the purchase of an innovative, web-based software program called Linked Senior Adaptive Technology. The technology utilizes tab-lets and kiosks that enable residents to engage in more meaning-ful activities for learning, socializing and entertaining.

“The Foundation is instrumental in helping us obtain the extra offerings that maximize the satisfaction of our residents,” says Joyce Markiewicz, president and CEO of Home & Community Based Care at Catholic Health. “Their work affords us the oppor-tunity to make a difference in so many lives – it is so important.”
