foundationalresearchacrossvariousmediatoevaluatehowmediaisasusedinK-12instruction,withan
awarenessofhowtheseskillswillplayoutinhighereducation,orinindividualslives.Theywillalso
investigatehowcriticalthinkingandtheInternetshapehowwelearn.Theclasswillconsiderthedistinct
contoursofmediaandinformationtechnologiesandhowtheseinfluencecurrentstudentsperceptions
oftheirsandothersrealities.Medialiteracymeansnotjustacceptingwhatispresented,butbeingan
activeuser,acriticalmediaevaluator,understandingcontent,systems,applicationandeffect,tobea
betterinformeddecisionmaker.
CoreObjectives:
1.Studentswillexaminetheevolvingnatureofsubject-matterknowledgeandtheneedforconstantly
acquiringnewideasandunderstandingswithinonesdiscipline,includingtheimpactoftechnology
andinformationsourcesonthenatureofteaching,communicationsanddevelopmentofknowledge.

COURSEASSESSMENTS(specificinstructionswillbedistributedseparately):
1.Attendance&in-classdiscussions(10%)
Activeparticipation,inthiscourse,isdefinedas:contributingrelevantinformationtoclassdiscussion,
demonstratinganunderstandingandengagementwithreadingassignmentsand/orconceptsdiscussed
inclass,applyingreadingandothercoursematerialstodiscussions,andbeingintellectuallypresentand
openthroughouteachclass.
2.OnlineDiscussions&DiscussionDirector(DD)(15%)
Throughoutthecourseyouwillbeexpectedtocontributeinonlinediscussions,alongwiththein-class
discussionsduringourface-to-facemeetings.Eachweekthediscussionswillfocusonaselectedreading
fortheweekandwillaskyoutohavereadandthenrespondtotheselection.Youwillrespondonlinea
minimumofonetimebeforeourweeklyclassmeetingandonetimeafterourclassmeeting.During
class,wewillsavetimetodiscussface-to-facetheselectionordiscussionsthathavearisenfrom
theliterature.Theonlinediscussionswillbeledeachweekbyoneofyourpeers.Youareexpected
toinvolveyourselfinthediscussion.Youmayrespondasoftenasyoulike,buttheminimumyoumay
respondisoncebeforeandonceafterclass.Therubricthatwillbeusedtoassessyourinvolvementinonlinediscussionswillbebasedonathree-pointscale.Therubricwillassesswhetherornotyouinvolve
yourselfinthediscussion,attentiontotheliterature,anddepthofthediscussion.Therubriccanbe
foundontheGoogleDoccontainingtheclassrubrics.Discussions,bothin-classandonlineareavaluable
andnecessarypieceoftheprofession.Practiceintheseenvironmentswillprepareyouforthesituations
thatwillpresentthemselvesthroughoutyourfuture
Eachweekallmembersoftheclasswillbeexpectedtocontributetodiscussionsinthevirtualclassroom
onGoogle+.Oneweekasemester,youwillactasaDiscussionDirector(DD)forthatweeksliterature.
Youwillberequiredtohavereadtheweeksliteratureandwritetwopromptsthataddresswhatyou
believethepertinentissuesoftheliteratureare.Youwillpostthesepromptstotheonlinediscussion
boardthedayafterourface-to-faceclasssession.Asindividualsreadtheliteratureandrespondtoyourprompts,itisyourresponsibilitytoleadadiscussionofwhatyoubelievetobetheessentialpartsofthat
weeksreadings.Intheface-to-faceclass,youwillpresentaquicksynopsis(5minutes)oftheweeks
readingsandwhatpointscameupinthediscussion.Inclass,wewillthenhavetimetodiscusshowthe
literatureaffectsthegreaterelementsofthecourseandtheeffectoninstruction.Therubriccan
befoundontheGoogleDoccontainingtheclassrubrics.Indiscussionenvironments,attimesyouwill
needtoleadagroup(ofpeersorstudents)indiscussion.Thisprovidesanopportunitytopracticethe
skillsanddispositionsneeded.
3.OnlineCollaborativeWritingResponses(15%)
ThisassignmentwillcallforyoutowritecollaborativelywithyoustudentsinclassusingICTssuchas
Wikipedia,Blogger,andGoogleDocs.Youwillworkonfourcollaborativewritingresponseswithyour
peersduringthesemester.Thesewritingsessionswillbeconductedinplaceoftheonlinediscussions
andDDresponsibilitiesfortheweek.Therubricsusedtoassessthisassignmentareavailableonthe
GoogleDoccontainingclassrubrics.
4.DefiningMediaLiteracy(20%)
Youaretoidentifyaconceptofmedialiteracyandproduceaviralvideotoplaceonlinesharingthe
findingsofyourresearchtothegeneraleducator.Thisvideoshouldbeofhighquality,andstill

representscholarlyresearch.Yourvideowillbeuploadedtothe6YCIT-DMLWikiand6YCIT-DML
YouTubeChannel.
5.NewMediaChallenge(20%)
Forthisassignmentyouwillusemedialiteracycurrentlyavailableonline,alongwithyourgrowingskills
intheuseanddevelopmentofonlineassessmentstobuildanewmediachallenge.Thischallengewill
ultimatelybeuploadedtothe6YCIT-DMLWikiforthepurposesofbeingfullyavailableonlineto
educators.YoushouldapproachthisusingaCriticalLiteracyperspectiveandincludetheappropriate
theoreticalperspectivesyoualsochosetoguideyourwork.Youmayworkcollaborativelyonthis
project,buttheresultantprojectshouldrepresentyourcollaborativeefforts.
6.NewMediaLearners(20%)
Thefinalprojectforthisclasscallsforyoutocompleteascholarlypaper/projectofyourowndesign
(withguidancefromtheinstructor)inwhichyoumakeacontributiontotheresearchbaseonnew
medialiteraciesandtheirplaceintheclassroom.Youmustuseyourexperienceasaclassroomteacher,
yourexperiencesinthisProgram,aswellasyourgrowingexperienceworkingwithmedialiteraciesto
developaninformativepaper/projectthatdetailsanaspectofmedialiteracy,anditspedagogicalaffordances.Thispaper/projectwillbeuploadedtotheIT-DLEWiki.
