The Tampa General Hospital Foundation’s 24th Annual “Night at the Circus” was a big success! This year’s event was held on January 2, 2015, at Amalie Arena, and Alexis Ciesla and Jennifer Stauffer chaired the event committee. They finished their two-year term with a bang, helping to make this year’s “Night at the Circus” the most successful to date. Their keen focus was cultivating new sponsorships and adding even more fun elements to the Patron’s Party. With the help of their enthusiastic committee, the chairs continued to raise awareness for the Tampa General Hospital Children’s Medical Center and the TGH Foundation throughout the community.

Each year, $2,500 sponsors and above are invited to attend the Patrons’ Party preceding the circus performance. This year, 500 guests feasted on delicious treats while the circus cast, jugglers, balloon twisters and DJ entertained our guests. Whether getting their faces painted like their favorite character or hamming it up

in the photo booth, a wonderful time was had by all. Net proceeds of $239,000 from this year’s event will benefit Tampa General Hospital’s Children’s Medical Center.

In this issue of FoundationFocus, we highlight all of you who made gifts to the Foundation during 2014. The Tampa General Hospital Foundation’s Annual Dinner will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2015, at the Hilton Tampa Downtown. During the dinner, our Foundation Chairman will give her report on the accomplishments and activities of the past year, and the Chairman of the Florida Health Sciences Center Board of Directors will give the hospital report. Consultant and former banker Gene E. Marshall has been appointed to serve on the governing board of Tampa General Hospital. Marshall is a founding board member and chairman of Northstar Bank based in Tampa. He also is a consultant with Success Sciences Inc.

Marshall will begin his three-year term in March, according to John Brabson Jr., chairman of the hospital’s governing board, Florida Health Sciences Center.

Marshall worked for The Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City for 21 years. He moved to Tampa in 1990 where he built and managed bank processing centers in Tampa, San Antonio, TX, and Vancouver, B.C. He became a senior vice president of JPMorgan Chase in 1993 and retired in 2004.

Marshall is active in the community and currently serves on the boards of the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, WEDU, the Caribbean American National Development Organization Inc. and the Council for Education Change, based in Weston, FL.

He also is chairman of the board of the University Area Community Development Corp., which works to improve the economic, educational and social welfare of more than 40,000 residents of the University Area neighborhood in North Tampa.

He holds an MBA in Management from New York University and a BBA in Finance from the Bernard M. Baruch College of the City University of New York.

Consultant and former banker Gene Marshall has been appointed to TGH’s governing board. .

For the fifth consecutive year, Southwest Airlines has awarded the TGH Foundation a year-long medical transportation grant that provides free, round-trip airline tickets for selected patients or family members who must travel long distances to the hospital.

Southwest’s Medical Transportation Grant program provides complimentary tickets to non-profit hospitals across the country. TGH is one of three hospitals in Florida chosen

by the airline to participate. Since 2010, approximately 200 TGH patients and their family members have benefited from the grants, which are awarded to the Foundation for the hospital.

TGH’s Case Management staff use the airline tickets to bring family members or significant others to the hospital to assist patients with their recoveries, or to help patients return to their families who live outside the Tampa Bay area.

“The Southwest Airlines grant allows Tampa General to better serve our patients and their families, and assist with transitions of care for our most fragile and challenging patient situations in a very compassionate and cost-effective way,” said Bill Gross, Social Work manager.

TGH celebrated the hospital’s 25th anniversary as the largest contributor of gifts to the Foster Angels program and honored the man who has coordinated that effort all 25 years – kitchen assistant Delwyn Collins. Each year, Delwyn hangs hundreds of paper angels on Christmas trees, each one representing a child in foster care and lists the child’s desired gifts. He also picks between 25 and 30 angels of his own from the tree to buy for. In recognition, TGH President and CEO Jim Burkhart presented Delwyn with a special jacket embroidered with “#1 Santa for Foster Angels of Hillsborough County” and an embroidered Santa hat.

“You have made such a difference in the lives of so many kids,” said Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor as she presented a signed photo to Delwyn that read, “You are my hero.”

operation SantaThanks to the generosity of many donors, Operation Santa raised over $20,000 in cash donations during the holiday season. Donations to our annual Operation Santa campaign allow us to purchase items from the Children’s Wish List and ensure that Santa makes his special visit to the children in the hospital during the

holidays. In addition, many companies, organizations and individuals came to visit the Children’s Medical Center bearing gifts.

Once Christmas is over, donations designated to Operation Santa make it possible for the Children’s Medical Center to help these little ones and their

families enjoy a birthday and other holiday “celebrations” throughout the year. From filling Christmas stockings and Easter baskets, to 4th of July celebrations and candles on a birthday cake, all who participate in Operation Santa bring joy to some of the very sickest of our pediatric patients.

The TGH Pediatric Trauma Program and AAA Auto Club Group - Traffic Safety Foundation held a news conference and car seat fitting event in November to raise awareness about a new Florida booster seat law that went into effect January 1, 2015. Family Care Center, Healthpark patients and family members attended the event and learned

how to properly secure a child in the seats. They also received car seats and bike helmets donated by AAA.

The new law requires children in motor vehicles to be restrained in federally-approved car seats or booster seats through the age of 5. Florida was one of only two

states that did not require car safety seats for children over age 3. TGH and AAA Auto Club Group - Traffic Safety Foundation worked to get the new law passed. AAA Auto Club Group - Traffic Safety Foundation donated 100 car seats, booster seats and helmets to TGH patients this year.

you Can Support Kids with Cancer at TGHTampa General Hospital Foundation recently established a new Pediatric Cancer Fund. The purpose of the fund is to provide kids who are diagnosed with cancer and their families support during the treatment process at Tampa General Hospital Children’s Medical Center.

Funds donated to the Pediatric Cancer Fund will be used to help purchase Care-Bags to be given to patients when they are first admitted to the hospital. The bags will include a handbook for parents, a notebook for journaling, and a toy for pediatric cancer patients. Donations will also allow us to purchase Chemo Ducks for kids with cancer. Chemo Ducks are stuffed ducks dressed in blue scrubs and include educational support material to help children and families understand their health situation. One of the best days for any child battling cancer is the last day of their chemotherapy treatments. At Tampa General, on a child’s last day of receiving chemotherapy, the pediatric oncology staff celebrates by throwing a “Champagne Chemo Celebration” for the patient. The Pediatric Cancer Fund makes it possible to throw this special party for a child to celebrate the end of his or her treatments. In addition, the donations will be used to assist in supporting pediatric cancer patients and their families during this difficult time if there is a need that cannot be met through traditional methods of funding.

On October 25, 2014, The University of Tampa Lacrosse team and vs. Cancer Foundation hosted their second annual lacrosse tournament to benefit Tampa General Hospital Children’s Medical Center. The vs. Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving kids’ lives by empowering athletes and communities to fund lifesaving childhood cancer efforts. The tournament raised close to $5,000 for our Pediatric Cancer Fund.

TGH Earns Quality Achievement Award For Stroke Care Tampa General has received the Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for its high level of care provided to stroke patients.

The Get With The Guildelines program helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines to speed recovery and reduce death and disability for stroke patients.

TGH earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. The hospital has received the highest-level Get With The Guidelines award available since 2005.

Last year, the hospital treated 827 patients for stroke, said Karen Wilson, TGH’s stroke program coordinator. “Our program provides the highest level of care available,” she said.

The hospital also received the association’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll award for meeting stroke quality measures that reduce the time between hospital arrival and treatment with the clot-buster tPA medication, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. This type of stroke is caused when a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain is blocked by a blood clot. The goal is to administer tPAs within 60 minutes of arrival to the hospital in patients who are candidates for the medication.

“We are pleased to recognize Tampa General for its commitment and dedication to stroke care,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, M.D., M.P.H., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines steering committee and executive director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. “Studies have shown that hospitals that consistently follow the Get With The Guidelines quality improvement measures can reduce patients’ length of stays and 30-day readmission rates and reduce disparity gaps in care.”

A national healthcare publication recently named TGH one of the nation’s “100 Hospitals with Great Neurosurgery and Spine Programs.” It is the only hospital on Florida’s west coast – and one of only four hospitals in Florida – named by Becker’s Hospital Review.

The selected hospitals “… offer remarkable spine and neurosurgical care as based in clinical accolades and recognition from various healthcare groups and agencies.

These hospitals have been recognized for excellence in the specialties by U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades, Blue Cross Blue Shield, CareChex and the American Nurses Credentialing Center,” Becker’s noted in the announcement.

The publication singled out the hospital’s around-the-clock availability of neurosurgeons and interventional radiologists, and its Neuro Intensive Care Unit, considered the largest on Florida’s west coast.

Earlier this year, TGH was also named as one of Becker’s “100 Hospitals and Health Systems With Great Heart Programs” and as one of the “100 Great Hospitals in America.”

The monthly Becker’s Hospital Review provides high-level hospital leaders with business and legal news and analysis relating to hospitals and health systems.

TGH’s Neurosurgery and Spine programs Among Top In Nation

In 2004, Tampa General identified the need to establish an Integrative Arts in Medicine program. Ten years later, the program, under the leadership of Dr. Sheela Chokshi, continues to grow, and more physicians are referring their patients for treatment by the practitioners who seek to empower patients with self-care techniques like gentle touch, music, movement and art therapies.

The purpose of the program is to integrate allopathic medicine with non-pharmacological mind-body-spirit modalities, with the goal of helping patients adapt to traditional medical treatments.

Some of the modalities used in the program include gentle touch such as cranial-sacral therapy, mindfulness breathing, visual art therapy, therapeutic-focused music, and gentle movement techniques including yoga and tai chi.

The program has received praise from patients and physicians who confer to the powerful healing process the mind possesses. A former TGH patient recently wrote to Dr. Chokshi, “the most profoundly powerful part of my whole experience at Tampa General Hospital was my Integrative Medicine visits!! These visits raised the bar and set a new standard of excellence for me. Each one of the practitioners who came to see me offered the special gift that was exactly right for what I needed in that moment.”

The praise also comes from physicians throughout TGH. “Treating patients with chronic headache and pain conditions has taught me that the best results are achieved utilizing a comprehensive, integrative approach. Craniosacral therapy and other complementary medicine modalities are key to success,” said Dr. María-Carmen B. Wilson, Director of the Tampa General Hospital Pain Management & Headache Program and Clinical Professor of Neurology.

The TGH Foundation has started a campaign to raise money to grow this program so that more patients can benefit from these services. The Integrative Arts in Medicine program is a service offered to the patients at no additional cost and is not reimbursed by insurance.

The benefits offered are measured by an increase in patient satisfaction, improved pain management processes, and a lifetime of non-medicated healing options learned through the various techniques offered by the program.
