Foundation Welcomes TrusteesThe Stormont Vail Foundation is pleased to welcome six new members to its Board of Trustees:

BIG HEARTS On Par for Cancer CareA record number of golfers helped set a record amount at the 18th Annual BIG HEARTS Golf Tournament.

All-together the event raised more than $240,000 in sponsorships, player registrations, in-kind and other gifts for oncology services at the Cotton O’Neil Cancer Center.

“With 254 participants it was a very busy day, but a great one,” said Tina Long, development officer with the Stormont Vail Foundation. “We are truly thankful for the continued support of our long-time sponsors, the commitment of many new partners who joined us this year, and everyone who came out to play, volunteer, or be part of this year’s tournament.”

Rick and Sue Wienckowski were the event’s honorary co-chairs.

The tournament’s presenting sponsor was Hospital Assistance Program, with Goodell, Stratton, Edmonds and Palmer LLP, Lockton Companies and the Wienckowskis serving as title sponsors.

The 2019 BIG HEARTS Golf Tournament will be held Monday, Sept. 16, at the Topeka Country Club. Proceeds will benefit a new Cotton O’Neil mobile clinic, which will reach patients in underserved areas across the region. Rocky and Debbie Taylor are the event’s honorary co-chairs.

Strollin’ Through a Colon for EducationGo to most any festival or fair and you’ll find giant inflatables.

Most are for fun and games. However, Stormont Vail Health is now using one in its efforts to reduce the rates of colorectal cancer thanks to a grant from the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

Specifically, the $7,500 grant has been used to purchase a large inflatable colon. It gives patients an idea of what a doctor might see during a routine colonoscopy. The teaching tool will be used at community events to draw attention to information designed to educate the public about colorectal cancer facts, prevention measures and screening options.

Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in the United States, most frequently diagnosed among adults over 65. To catch these typically slow-growing malignancies early, most doctors’ groups recommend colorectal cancer screening starting at age 45.

Yet, compliance with colorectal screening is low, according to Robin McKay, ARPN with the Cotton O’Neil Cancer Center.

“This is particularly concerning because today the risk of developing colon cancer is twice as high as it was just a few years ago and the risk of developing rectal cancer is four times

higher,” McKay said. “However, the promising news about colon cancer is when it is detected at an early stage overall survival is much improved.”

Which is why McKay and her team are making outreach and education such a priority.

“We’re very grateful to Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation for their generosity, said McKay. “The inflatable colon is certainly a conversation starter. Our hope is those conversations lead to increased screenings, which is the first step to saving lives.”

Foundation Recognizes Philanthropic ExcellenceThe Stormont Vail Foundation celebrated National Philanthropy Day by honoring both long-time donors and a new partner.Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and Prairie Band Casino and Resort were recognized jointly with the 2018 Outstanding Corporate Donor award. Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation supports organizations across northeast Kansas and has funded various Stormont Vail Foundation projects including the Care Line, pediatrics and the Cotton O’Neil Diabetes & Endocrinology Center and Cancer Center. Additionally, the Prairie Band Casino and Resort has been an 11-year sponsor of the Foundation’s BIG HEARTS Golf Tournament.The Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award was presented to Kansas State University’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon team. In 2018, the group raised more than $15,000 for Stormont Vail’s pediatrics services at its first Children’s Miracle Network event. The group will be holding

its second annual event on Feb. 23, 2019.The National Philanthropy Day awards are presented by the Topeka Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Walmart, Sam’s Club Raise Funds for PediatricsWalmart and Sam’s Club associates, customers and members across northeast Kansas put their money where the miracles are during the annual Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising campaign.

The region’s 13 stores raised over $106,000 for pediatric services at Stormont Vail Health as part of a national campaign for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals which resulted in $36.5 million raised.

Donations poured in Aug. 27 to Oct. 7 as Walmart and Sam’s Club associates held in-store fundraising activities and asked customers and members at the register to help kids. Fundraising events included a carnival in Emporia, a car show in Topeka and a silent auction in Marysville.

“We are so thankful for the generosity of Walmart and Sam’s Club associates in our region,” said Sarah Basso, Children’s Miracle Network Program Manager. “Because of their hard work and enthusiasm, kids across northeast Kansas will get the care they need to get and stay well.”

Donations from the campaign will be used at Stormont Vail to partially fund the Child Life program, the Neonatal Intensive Care follow-up clinic and Breastfeeding Center.

Cotton O’Neil Emporia’s Dr. Todd Detwiler, M.D., and Kathy Johnson, LPN, volunteered at the Children’s Miracle Network For the Kids Carnival at the Emporia Walmart Supercenter.
