From the President I trust all of you have come through the winter months just fine and are looking forward, as much I am, to an exciting 2011. This is the first of what will be a series of President’s Messages in each edition of our Foundation news- letter. Through this column I’ll offer a brief highlight of a current or new Foundation activity, or talk about other timely issues facing Michigan dentistry and, specifically, areas of concern to the Foundation. With this newsletter I’m proud to announce the creation of a Planned Giving Opportunity through your Foundation for our supporters and their families. This is a great new way you can help support Foundation activities. Our board began this project over a year ago. You can see the details on our website (www.smilemichigan.com; Foundation area). I invite you to visit our website or stop by the Foundation booth at the MDA Annual Session in Grand Rapids. You may also contact Lori Klein- felt at the MDA office for more information. The Michigan Dental Association Foundation recently received two very generous gift commit- ments totaling $125,000. These gifts speak to our donors’ confidence in the Foundation’s commit- ment to its philanthropic mission on your behalf to the benefit of those less fortunate. As we progress through 2011, we look forward to continued increases in Foundation activities and giving. Foundation Awards Two New Scholarships April 2011 Volume 6 Issue 1 The Philanthropic Leader of Michigan’s Oral Health Community Dr. Michael Jennings Each year the Michigan Dental Association Foundation awards student scholarships to dental, dental hygiene and dental assisting students, through the generous donations of individuals and partner organizations. The Foundation awards money through its Robert D. Mitus Scholarship Fund. Since the scholarships began in 1999, approximately 99 scholarships have been given, for a total of $109,000 in gifts. The Michigan Dental Association Foundation Robert D. Mitus Scholarship Dental Hygiene recipients for the academic year 2010-2011 are Staci Carroll, of the University of Detroit Mercy, and Patricia Walch, of the University of Michigan. If you are interested in setting up a scholarship program to as- sist future dental professionals in the state of Michigan, contact the Michigan Dental Association Foundation’s Lori Kleinfelt at 800-589-2632, ext. 406 Patricia Walch: Hoping to Make a Difference Patricia Walch is a senior dental hygiene student at the University of Michigan, originally from Chelsea. She’s had a life- long dream of working in the dental field, ever since she was in the eighth grade, where she wrote an essay and elaborated on how she wanted to help fix people’s teeth. Ever since that moment, Patricia took appropriate mea- sures to prepare for her future in the dental profession. “I enjoy patient education on matters such as proper oral hygiene technique, nutrition and oral health as it relates to systemic health,” Patricia says, “because it not only builds patients’ trust, but it’s also rewarding to witness the interest they have in enhancing their quality of life. Foundation Recognized –The Michigan Dental Asso-ciation Foundation was recently recognized by the Junior League of Lansing for its Access to Care Grant given in 2010.

Dear Michigan Dental Association Foundation:

I want to write and THANK the Foundation for its generous grant to the Junior League of Lansing. This money is very well spent, as I have personally treated several Head Start parents who were in dire need of dental care. Not only did these patients in some instances need full mouth or partial mouth extractions, thru the Junior League Funding we were able to provide these parents with dentures and partials. Now these parents can smile, talk to their kids about oral care and more importantly feel good about themselves to help their kids in their daily life. Thank you again from Carefree Dental Clinic, Lansing Michigan,

Sincerely, ‘Timothy J. Zieinski DDS Carefree Dental Director
