This Foundation Apprenticeship is designed to provide young people with the software design and programming skills to write and maintain computer applications, to create websites and to successfully define customer requirements and take them from initiation to final product. In addition to formal college tuition, time will be devoted to work related experience including work placements, work shadowing, industry visits and work related training.

A Foundation Apprenticeship takes two years to complete, is the same level of learning as a Higher (SCQF level 6), and is one of your subject choices. As you work towards a qualification you will spend time out of school at college and with a local employer.

The Foundation Apprenticeship (FA) in Engineering aims to give pupils the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to enter into a career in Engineering and the Advanced Manufacturing sector. The programme is designed to provide students with theory, practice and related work experience.

Pupils must be working at National 5 Level (SCQF Level 5) as a minimum and should have the potential to develop to Higher Level (SCQF level 6). Maths at SCQF Level 5 and working towards success in Higher Maths is expected, as is taking another STEM based subject. A good level of written and spoken English is essential, as is and real aptitude for problem solving. Prospective candidates will go through an interview process, provide a good school reference and may also be required to take an aptitude test.

The course duration is over 2 years and would involve:

� 4 afternoons a week for 2 years.� 1.30 - 4.30pm for 36 weeks� Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and

The Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering has 3 major components:

�� A full National Certificate (NC) in an Engineering discipline (SCQF L6)�� 5 units of a SVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations

(SCQF L5)�� Work-related experience and an Industry Challenge project.

Year 1

In year 1 pupils are expected to work towards 5 units of the SVQ L2 in Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) at SCQF level 5, and also a proportion of the core or restricted core units from the NC in Engineering Systems at SCQF level 6.

Year 2

Completion of any outstanding Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) units including 3 mandatory, and the remainder of any core / restricted core and optional units from the NC in Engineering Systems. The majority of work-related experience is expected to be gained in year 2.

On satisfactory completion of the programme candidates will have the opportunity of progressing to our HNC programme in Engineering, or may be able to secure a fast-track Modern Apprenticeship in an Engineering or related sector.
