HANFSTAENGL'S CATALOGUE OF REPRODUCTIONS
FRO~I THE WORKS OF
OLD MASTERS
Price I S. 6d.
(FULLY lLLUSTRATED)
NOTE ~N placing this extract from my large illustrated Catalogue
of "Old Masters" before the public, I have been prompted
by the desire to re~cu e these reproductions from oblivion,
into which they otherwise might have fallen. Pictures in
public collections, accessi ble to everyone, are not likely to be forgotten;
pictures gathered for a special purpose for on ce anel for once only are
as gooel as burieel so soon as the privacy of their owner's residence
has embraceel them, anel it is only in reproeluctions, such as mine I
hope will be founel, that the worlel at large can enjoy to some extent
these hidelen treasures.
The rep roeluctions ment ioned in this li st are taken from pictures
at one time or the other collecteel at the Roya l Acaelemy, the N ew
Gallery and the Guilelhall, viz., the Rembranelt Exhibition of 1899
(Roya l Acaelemy), the Van Dyck Exhibition of 1900 (z"bzd.), the
Exhibition of Flemish anel British Schools of [899- [900 (N ew Gallery),
the "Spanish Painters" Exhibition, [90 I (Guildhall).
The reproductions themsel ves were executed with the greatest
3
care, emd I take this opportunity of expressing my sincere thanks to
the owners of the orio-inals and the directors of the different institutions b
R·4·
for the facilities given to me.
No labour was spared to make
these monochrome translations as
faithful as the photographic lens
and the photographer's skill will
permit, so that they should form
a source of pleasure even to those V. D. 10.
to whom the originals may not be known.
H·.4 3·
\ Vho would not, for instance, be glad to call to his mind once more
such works as M1'. Fitzwilliam's
01' Sir Alg Neeld's E embrandt
(R. Ex. 43 ami 4)? \Vho would
not care to refresh his memory
of pictLll-es such as the Duke of
Bucc1ellch's " i\Iarqlless of 1-1 unt
ley," by Van Dyck ( V. D. Ex. IO), v. D. 40.
or the Duke of Norfolk's "Earl of Anmde1" (ibid. 40), by the same
artist? A most remarkable collection of pictures was brought together
1"1. 203.
in thc New Gallery's \\'inter Ex
hibition of 1899- J 900, interesting
not on I)' to experts, who were
particularly delighted with some
of M. de Somzee's priceless panels
(Fi. Ex. 26, etc.), but also to the
Iess compiex appreciation of the FI. 202 .
Ia)' art lover (see for instance Romney's " Mrs. de Bergh," belonging to
Mr. Donaldson (Fi. Ex. 2°3),01' Hoppner's" Child with a Dog" (Fi. Ex.
4
202), Mr. Butler's property. The Spanish Exhibition is perhaps too
recent to have been forgotten. There Goya, of whose merits as a painter
little or nothing was generally
knowl1 in this country, was found
almost equal in interest (see his
"Portrait of Melendez -Valdes,"
Sp. Ex. 66, belonging to the
Bowes Museum, or his" Portrait
of La Sefiora de Cean Bermudez," Sp. >04 .
lent bythe Marques de Casa- Torres, Sp. Ex. 63), if not in technique, with
his giant predecessor Velazquez, who is represented in my collection,
amongst others, by such instruct
ive works as Sir Frederick Cook's
"Spanish Beggar" (Sp. Ex. I04),
the Duke of \ Vestminster's "Don
Baltasar in the Riding SchooI"
(Sp. Ex. 127), ancl Mr. Leatham's
" Young Man" (Sp. Ex. 123). Sp. 127.
1fthis little list, which I have--for reference purposes- carefully
and fully illustrated, is received in the spirit in wh ich it is offered, it
will be the means of supplying art lovers and experts
with a source of pleasure and instruction, and of
proving to me that I have not spent valuable time
and labour in vain.
