June 2, 2011 To whom it may concern: I am delighted to recommend Kathy Pounders for promotion to Senior Instructor in the Department of Communication. I have known Kathy since I joined the Communication Department as chair in 1997. Over the seven years that I served in this capacity, I had many opportunities to interact with Kathy, to assess her performance, and to develop a sense of her capabilities and strengths. As a result of my interactions with Kathy, two qualities stand out for me, both of which lend support to her application for promotion. First, she is a superb instructor. She consistently earns excellent teaching evaluations, and reports of her teaching by students are overwhelmingly positive. She has a reputation among faculty in our Department as the go-to person for ideas for teaching, for ways to approach topics in innovative ways, and for ideas on handling difficult pedagogical issues. She also is always willing to teach what is needed and to step in at the last minute to take on a course that needs to be taught or to fill in for faculty members who are ill or otherwise unable to meet their classes. A second quality that characterizes Kathy is that she stands out in her willingness to go beyond what is required of her as an instructor and to provide service to the Department in whatever ways are needed. Her commitment to the Department is evidenced in the initiative she takes to develop training, programs, and resources for other faculty members in the Department. Kathy’s service as our Department’s online coordinator is a current manifestation of this commitment, but even when I was chair and instructors were not allowed to engage in service, I could count on Kathy ’s drive, creativity, and innovation to provide support for our instructional activities. Kathy’s presence is indispensable to our Department. She certainly deserves to be accorded the status of a Senior Instructor. Sincerely, Sonja K.
