19TH INTERNATIONAL L.A.U.D.-SYMPOSIUM: LANGUAGE AND SPACE March 22-24, 1994, Duisburg, Germany Organized in collaboration with the International Pragmatics Association and the Max Planck Project Group on Cognitive Anthropology (Nijmegen).
The theme of the conference and the date have been chosen in view of the 400th anniversary of the death of GERARDUS MERCATOR (09-3-1594) the famous cartographer and universal scientist, who was born in Rupelmonde near Antwerp and worked most of his life in Duisburg, where he died in 1594.
The symposium will concentrate on various aspects of the relationships between language and space such as: 1. Language about space. The subjects to be discussed include the conceptualization of space as a single continuum in various languages or the unity of space and time in other languages; the general principles underlying the construal of spatial concepts and the effects of word classes on the type of spatial concepts. 2. Space in language. Discussion will centre on the spatial basis of more abstract conceptualizations, e.g. spatial prepositions used as expressions of cause. Further subjects are, for example, metaphorical spatial expressions for segments of experience, such as the conduit metaphor for communication, the workshop or manipulation metaphor for mental activity, the steaming container metaphor for emotional expe- rience, etc. 3. Language in space. Topics to be explored will include the material and linear structuring of language in space or time and the various (left to right etc.) constraints this structuring imposes on the possibilities for the subjective organisation of expe- rience by means of perspectivising strategies such as orientation, vantage point, directionality and construal. All these strategies very strongly bear upon spatial deixis and reference. 4. Language and space. Different languages encode different kinds of spatial distinc- tions. How fundamental are the differences and what do these differences reveal about the relationship between linguistic representation and cognition?
