"This is the time of fulfillment.
The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and be-lieve in the gos-
pel." Mark: 1-14
I can not help but wonder if the people of Hawaii look at this scrip-ture a little differently today. For more than 30 minutes on Saturday, January 13, 2018 they thought they were facing certain death.
Imagine being on the Islands and hearing the warnings of incoming missiles! WE can be certain there were many repentant souls.
Then I think of the scripture from Matthew 25:13; “Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour. “
We are now 7 or 8 days after the false alarm in Hawaii, are they still repentant? Then I wonder what about you and I? Are we truly re-pentant? Do we believe in the Gos-pel enough to live it with all of our heart? Daily? If we can not say YES, then I wonder why not! For there is great truth in the fact we do not know the “day nor the hour”.
We are called to hope in Jesus Christ. Jesus made that clear, pro-claiming that “The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP
RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
I use GPS wherever I go and it serves
me well most of the time. However,
sometimes it leads me to a place that
does not exist. Then there are those
times when I am about to turn and
the man inside my phone shouts out,
"GPS signal lost" or "Rerouting!" The
problem is when the area is unfamil-
iar to me, I have no choice but to lis-
ten. I could try to get where I am going
by simple intuition or pulling over to
look at a paper map, but I don't trust
my sense of direction and haven't
bought a paper map in close to a
decade.
Many people move through life with-
out any direction. They find them-
selves constantly rerouting and
wondering when they will ever get to a
satisfying final destination. What they
need is a compass and a companion
for the journey, yet they have no idea
how to get either.
Prayer can serve as a compass and it
connects us to a companion for the
journey. Stewardship living is impossi-
ble without prayer. If we count on our
own will and believe we can become
fruitful without daily contact with the
divine we can find ourselves looking
for directions more than moving to-
ward a destination. God through pray-
er will help us see all we have as gift.
God through prayer will lead us away
from materialism and selfishness to-
ward freedom and generosity. Even
when we fall to sin, the path back is
clearer. God's GPS signal is never
really lost.

The Light of the World Retreat weekend was a truly enjoyable experience for us. It stressed the importance of making Jesus the center of our lives and that it is necessary to give him control of all areas of our life. It was a fun experience. We made new friends and developed a bond with the other retreatants. Since then, we have participated on retreat teams which has brought us a growing sense of community or family. LOTW is an important facet of our faith life together and it continues to grow as we journey forward.

ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
"So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him." What did Zebedee think about all of this?
His sons and his partners, James and John, suddenly left their post and followed Jesus. So there he stood in the boat with a crew of employees, but not one of his sons. We can't help but wonder whether Zebedee was in favor of this promise that his heirs would become "fishers of men." Most likely, this event was the cause of some familial tension.
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus instructs us to love and serve oth-
ers for the love of God. But the Lord also makes it clear that our devotion to him is meant to trump our devotion to anything--or any-one--else. For our part, we are called to allow this divine alle-giance to exist in those we love, even when it means a sacrifice for us as well. Parents for example, like Zebedee, are called to en-courage their children to follow the Lord's call. A son or daugh-ter's vocation to religious life cer-tainly exemplifies this kind of sac-rifice for a parent who might have had a different plan in mind. But in truth every son and daughter has a vocation from God and parents have the opportunity to support and assist their children
as they seek to hear and follow God's special plan for their lives.
We don't know for sure how Zebe-dee responded to the vocation of his sons, but we know that James and John were counted among the Twelve Apostles and that their de-votion and dedication helped to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Regardless of what he might have thought as he stood in that boat, we can be quite sure that looking back now, Zebedee can rejoice heartily in the choice of his sons to leave their nets and follow Christ.
