Principal Report

I had the pleasure of opening the 14th Northern Region

Local Schools Convention on Friday the 28th of July. This

event at Lalor Secondary College welcomed over 100

students and staff from various schools and included

guest speakers such as; David Feeney, Federal Member

for Batman, Bronwyn Halfpenny, State Member for

Thomastown, David Mould, Director of Second strike

and Kate Sedgwick (Associate at Maurice Blackburn Law-

yers). The topic discussed at the convention was “Should

the Marriage Act 1961 be amended by the Australian

parliament to recognise marriage equality?” This topic

is very current and is being debated in forums around

the country.

The students were able to discuss their points of view

and then took part in a plebiscite to gauge the opinions

of all in the room. The results came out with 70% in fa-

vour of amending the Marriage Act and 30% against. I

would like to thank the Lalor Secondary College staff

that coordinate this event, Peter Leos, Sam Kotsopoulos,

Ersilia Bruno and Amanda Cartisano, as well as all of our

visiting schools for being involved in such a fantastic

event.

A reminder to those parents who have received infor-

mation related to the parent opinion survey. The individ-

ual survey links have been sent out to parents via email

and letter and can be completed online taking around 10

minutes to complete. I encourage all parents who re-

ceive the correspondence to please take the time and

share your opinions about how the school is going. It is

information that the school finds vital in helping plan for

future decision making. If you have any questions about

this survey or would like more detail, please refer to the

previous newsletter or contact the general office or my-

self.

Friday the 25th of August is a Curriculum Day for all staff

at Lalor Secondary College. This means they will be in-

volved in a professional learning program that targets

the school priorities and increases their capacity to

teach in the 21st Century. This will therefore be a stu-

dent free day and all students are not to attend school

on this day.

The school Multi-Cultural Concert will run on Wednes-

day the 30th and Thursday the 31st of August. Tickets will

be on sale as of Monday the 14th of August and I encour-

age all members of the school community who wish to

attend to get in fast before it is a sell-out. Tickets will not

be sold at the door on the night.

If you have any questions or queries in relation to the

information above please contact me at your earliest

convenience.

Year 11 & 12

The Year 11 and 12 Sub School team have just complet-ed our Parent Information Evenings for students enter-ing Year 11 and Year 12 next year. This involved a range of information on possible options including VCE, VCAL and VET studies. As well as some important career ad-vice. I’d like to thank the parents who attended and took time from your busy lives to help us better support your children through this process. The more that teachers and parents can actively work together to support our students through these times of transition, the better outcomes for all. We enjoy every opportunity that we have to meet with parents to answer questions and I am grateful to the staff that gave up time away from their own families to attend the evening.

I’d like to alert you to a compass notification that I up-loaded last week about our IT infrastructure. We have been undergoing some extensive upgrades to our net-work and these will continue over the course of the year. I look forward to sharing some exciting updates about our new systems in the near future.

The exciting work from our SRC continues. They are bus-ily planning two casual clothes days this term. The SRC has been working with youth workers from Whittlesea council on a number of exciting initiatives such as ‘kids teaching kids’ and RU OK Day. This has involved a lot of hours and organisation from our SRC as they try and in-stitute events that we have not had before at Lalor. It’s exciting and we can’t wait to share our experiences of the day in future newsletters!

Years 9 and 10

Supporting our students through their

Pathways Journey.

Selecting the best suitable academic pathway for your child can be at times a little confusing however, the mid-dle school team are aware of the challenges and uncer-tainties that some parents and their children may face. Last Week, on Friday all year 10 and 11 students were provided with the opportunity to attend the Lalor Sec-ondary College Careers Expo. The Expo was designed with the goal of providing students with additional infor-mation to assist them in their planning towards possible future career pathways and as support for the upcoming subject selection processes they will shortly be under-taking. Exhibitors included representatives from Univer-sities and Tafe Colleges, the Police Force, Defence Force and various community based agencies. Students were able to collect information and obtain insights to details relating to the nature of the required study. The Expo was organised by Ms Sakelaris and Ms Cujic and follows on closely from year 10 work experience. Some students have also been taking up opportunities provided by Ms Sakelaris to become involved in VET Taster Sessions, which enable them to experience practical career path-ways, including the trades of Brick Laying and Building and Construction. These events ensure that LSC students are certainly well placed to make informed decisions about their pathways into the senior years and beyond. I would like to thank Ms Sakelaris, Ms Cujic and Ms Chan-try for providing these opportunities for our students.

Over the coming weeks, the College will be continuing to host Parent Information Evenings for 2018 subject selec-tions. These Information sessions are designed to pro-vide you with information that will enable you together with your child, to make confident and suitable choices for the best possible educational pathways into their senior years of secondary school. These have begun for current year 10 and 11 students.

Next week we on Tuesday 15th August we have the year 11 2018 Subject Counselling Day. Parents of current year 10 students would have already received a letter regard-ing the arrangements for this day. On this day, no formal classes will be held and students have been issued with appointment times for their subject selection interview. Details of which, have already been conveyed during the information evening this week. We are expecting that you will have had discussions with your child about their selected pathway prior to this interview. Staff will be available to answer any questions you may have. Par-ents are encouraged to attend on this day.

For students currently in year 9, the Parent Information session for year 10 2018 will take place on the 15th Au-gust at 6.30 in the Drama centre. Again, it is vital that parents attend.

It has been great chatting with many year 10 students who have had such positive learning opportunities through their work Experience Placements a couple of weeks back. I am proud to convey that several students were offered part time work from these placements, and that all students were impeccable ambassadors of our school in the wider community.

Together with Mr Danher, Mr Mc Donald and Mr Wil-kinson I am looking forward to the year 10 formal to be held on Friday 25th August.

Years 7 & 8

To combat a recent rise in cases of Meningococcal W disease, the Victorian Government has introduced a free, time-limited vaccine program for young people in Years 10, 11 and 12. Although uncommon, meningococ-cal disease can become life threatening very quickly. If people are vaccinated, they protect themselves and those around them by reducing the spread of the dis-ease. The vaccine is safe, effective, free and only availa-ble this year. Young people receiving the vaccine will be protected against the ‘W’ strain of the disease, as well as the three other strains (‘A’,’C’ and ‘Y’)

The City of Whittlesea Immunisation Team will be at the school Wednesday, 16th of August to vaccinate Year 10 students and again on Wednesday 23rd of August to see students in Years 11 and 12.

The students were given consent cards this week. I ask you to ensure these cards are completed and returned to the school as soon as possible. Please complete and return the cards even if you do not want your son or daughter to be vaccinated.

We are all aware that the volume of traffic on our roads is increasing. This is especially true of the main thor-oughfares around LSC. With this in mind, I would ask parents who are dropping students off before school to comply with the parking restrictions that are in place on Dalton Road and David Street. Cars parked in restricted areas represent a danger to students on foot (who are often hurrying) and to other drivers on these roads. I would also ask students to cross these roads at the crossings and to respect the directions of the crossing attendants.

Work Experience

Second week back of term 3 saw over 180 year 10 Lalor Sec-ondary College students embark on a week of work experience. Students worked in a variety of workplaces including law firms, pharmacies, builders, hospitals, Wildlife Park, primary schools, retail outlets and even parliament.

The feedback from employers has been extremely positive with students upholding the college’s values whilst out in the work-ing world. Highlights for most students was having a staff mem-ber attend their work placement. Students should be congratu-lated on their efforts for representing Lalor Secondary College in such a positive manner and I hope that you all got an insight into what the working world is about and maybe even found your dream job or career!

I would like to thank all the staff that went and visited students over the week and Ms Cujic for all her hard work with the pro-gram. Well done!

Ms Chantry and Ms Cujic

Year 12

Next week Year 12 students will be assisted to submit their online VTAC applications for university and TAFE courses in 2018. This can be a daunting task, but students should feel as-sured that Ms Chantry will take them through the process step by step. All Year 12 students should have a good idea of which courses they plan to apply for, through various presentations and attending expos. The key dates are listed below and I re-mind all students to download the free VTAC app to research courses and prerequisites. This is an extremely important mile-stone for year 12’s, so please ensure the appropriate prepara-tion has occurred at home before these sessions commence

Students should visit the Careers Office if they have concerns or questions about the VTAC process and parents are most wel-come to contact Ms Chantry if they have any questions.

OPEN DAY REMINDER – Make sure you attend Open Days this year. They are your opportunity to ‘try before you buy’ your university or TAFE course. Remember to use Open Day planners before attending. For example, La Trobe University has a handy tool for browsing the Open Day activities and lets you build a personalised schedule to follow on the day. You can download the La Trobe Open Day app which you can use to access your timetable as well as maps to help you get around.

2017 Careers Expo

On Friday 4th August, Lalor Secondary College staged it’s 2017 Careers Expo, for students in Year 10 and 11, to assist with their subject choices and future pathways.

On the day we hosted 25 exhibitors, representing Uni-versities, TAFES, Training Organisations, industry associations, employer groups, Victoria Police, Australian Taxation Office, and the Defence Force along with our own Amanda D (team Psychology).

The vibe and feedback in the Drama Centre on Friday - was very fantastic from all staff, students and exhibitors.

We were particularly impressed with the stu-dents’ maturity in seeking advice about courses, pathways and connecting with various exhibitors.

Whilst the day held many memorable moments for us the following student’s response was the quote of the day.

“ Ms I didn’t realise I had so many career options. I feel really good about my future now”

This event could not have come to fruition with-out our dedicated team of student helpers. They were awesome with assisting us prior to the event and also made everything run very smooth-ly on the day, for which we are grateful.

We look forward in making the Careers Expo an annual event at our college.

SWINBURNE ITALIAN JUNIOR POETRY COMPETITION

In the last week of Semester One, our Year 7&8 students of Italian participated in the Swinburne Poetry Competition. The junior competition is held at school and the Swinburne Uni-versity of Technology sends an examiner to the school.

All the students nervously recited their poems and when it was all over, they were treated to an Italian-style morning tea of pizza, salami, Italian cheese and biscuits, crostoli and to top it all off gelato in a variety of flavours. All the students who participated ate well and had a very enjoyable time.

Congratulations to the following students who performed and participated very well in the competition.

Library News

We are down to the last month of the Victorian

Premiers’ Reading Challenge. The last day is Friday

8th September.

Our challengers are reminded to log on to their Reading Challenge account regularly, to enter any books they have read so far. Some students are so close to finishing. If they are struggling to read the final few books, they are encouraged to see the Teacher Librarians to find some suitable books that they can read quickly. Suitable books include picture books and graphic novels.

The number of students who have completed this year’s challenge is now 70! This is a fantastic achievement so far. Let’s see how many students will complete this year.

The VIP Reading Challenge Lunch Party will be held during the last week of Term Three. All students who have met the Challenge will receive a special invitation in Week 9.

As students enter their books on their Reading Challenge online account, the system collects data on students’ reading habits. The following book titles are being read and enjoyed by our

Challengers.

The following book review was written by a Year 7 student:

Dragon Ball is a Japanese manga series created by Akira Toriyama who is also the crea-tor of Dr Slump. It is visually appealing to a young audience. It is about Goku who is a wild boy fighting for survival who runs into a green haired lady called Bulma. They team up after they agree to hunt for the seven dragon balls. Dragon balls are seven magical orbs that summon an eternal dragon when gathered. The dragon is called Shenron and can grant

almost any wish. Goku and Bulma run into an old mas-ter called Master Roshi. He is the creator of the infa-mous move Kametlametla which took him fifty years to create but Goku masters it in a few seconds. After they acquire a dragon ball and run into the shape shifter Oo-long. They disagree and befriend Oolong and later Yam-cha. One of the main messages of the book is 'why have enemies when you can have friends'.

Art

On Monday, select Art students across years 8 to 11 commenced their SmArts Printmaking workshop, run by the Smith Family and the APW. We first learnt some of the history of etching and printmaking; printmaking goes back to the 15th century to print books that were first handwritten. We then watched Simon, from APW, run through the process of etching and creating prints using plastic and copper. After a short recess, we walked the streets of Fitzroy to appreciate various street art. After meeting back at the APW, we began sketching our first print. We then gathered at the NGV International to visit a Jim Dine exhibit. Jim Dine is an American printmaker, using themes of tools and memories within his prints. We then walked through the 14th to 20th century exhibit to take a look at print-making in its historical origins. This week we begin our sketches that will be used next Monday for our prints.

We are grateful for this opportunity to work with Simon to broaden our skills in printmaking. Through this, we will be able to enforce our skills in and out of the class-room.

LITERACY CORNER

The Literacy support team gained a new member at the end

of last term and we thought we would take this opportunity

to introduce Tram Nguyen to everyone. Miss Nguyen knows

the school very well having been a student here in 2011.

Miss Nguyen has very fond memories of doing her Year 12

here, although she still dreads the stairs in the 100s building.

One of her most enjoyable experiences while at Lalor was a

live version of ‘Cosi’ that was performed for the students. This

inspired her to study Shakespeare and focus on live theatre

during her time at university. She also remembers Mr James

well, as he inspired her to become an English teacher. Accord-

ing to Miss Nguyen, “Mr James just made English make

sense.” Luckily for us, Miss Nguyen is now doing that for our

students too. Her favourite book is ‘The Night Circus’ by Erin

Morgenstern which she said seems to be rather polarizing

book. People tend to love it or hate it and Miss Nguyen is

firmly in the love it camp. If you’ve read it, Miss Nguyen is

more than happy to discuss any comments or feelings you

might have about the book and you can add to her tally. Her

favourite movie is ‘A Walk to Re-

member’, which she says “Makes her

cry every time.” Who doesn’t love a

good tearjerker now and then?

Please make Miss Nguyen feel wel-

come and say hello if you are passing

by the Literacy Office. Thanks for

joining the Team!!

Canine Comprehension Program

During Term 3 a group of Year 7 students have been lucky enough to work with Canine Comprehension on an Animal Assisted Therapy Program called "Communication on the Inside and Out". This program, which runs for 8 weeks, works with a tutor and a specifically trained therapy dog and has great success in reducing students anxiety, helping them un-derstand their learning, getting them to communicate more effectively and enjoying coming to school. We are up to week 4 and I would like to report that we have many positive stories of the students connecting with the dogs and building their confidence around the exercises they have been work-ing on. We look forward to working with the Canine Com-prehension team in Semester two. For more information about the Canine Comprehension program please visit: www.caninecomprehension.com.au.
