April and May Meetings

Charlie W4TMR presented EZNec, Part 1, an exciting introduction into using EZNec for simple wire antennas in April. Last month we continued with EZNec, Part 2, dipoles and modeling more complex antennas. There was a rapt audience and great questions, more than time would permit. Charlie deserves big kudos for bringing great insight and clarity into a complex subject. His enthusiasm was contagious. Helper Gene, WB4MSG who so ably ran the computer program quickly anticipating display needs also deserves kudos, Gene has that rare ability to quickly master complex technical computer programs. And Charlie spent many hours learning EZNec and so professionally preparing his presentation. Thank you guys, a really great job.

Field Day Part 1Main Field Day Operation - Red Cross

by Henry W2DZO

The FARC will be hosting 2 Field Day sites this year! One component of the club will be operating as a 3F station from the Red Cross Chapter House. This will allow us to demonstrate to the public how the Red Cross and Amateur radio are very often side by in times of disaster. Henry W2DZO and Gene WB4MSG will be heading up this operation. We will be inviting the staff of the Red Cross to join us for a cook out at 6pm. Plans are still in development for a joint Press release and possible tours which may include members of the Red Cross staff. The 3F crew will run the 2 shack rigs, a portable rig setup outside and a GOTA station housed in John Kippe's trailer using the club antenna trailer. We will use W4NC and WS4NC (GOTA) at this site.

The second component of the FARC FD operation will be out at Hobby Park under the direction of Doc WB4QIZ (See FD Part 2 below)

We will have a unique opportunity to showcase and demo MT63, the latest data mode being used in amateur radio for disaster communication. We will have a hot link set up for the most of Field Day between the 2 operations using this mode. Regardless of which site you visit (or you may visit both!) you'll have a great Field Day experience!

Dayton Hamfest

If you have never been to the Dayton Hamvention - it is ground zero for ham radio. A group of us go every year and describing the experience is not easy. We are usually limited to a small group of five now but if you are interested I can get you some information on bus trips that leave from the Triad and include hostel-like accommodations, nothing fancy. With planning it is not very expensive - but the operative word here is planning. This means you need to commit well before the end of August. If you weren’t on one of the lists before Oct 1 you can still go - but you will spend more on 2 hotel nights than we spend on the trip.

Fox Hunt Antennas

On the program list for this year is a building program for a tape measure beam for Fox Hunting (or just 2-meter mountain-topping fun). We will have the supplies ready for building at the August or September meeting - cost will be about $12-15 including a BNC cable, payable at the meeting when we build them. But we will need to know how many to order; some of the parts are coming from China and will take more than a month so we have to order soon. A sign up sheet went around at the May meeting, be sure you are on the list email Tim at King <dot> TimA <at> gmail <dot> com .

A “SPIRITED” TRIP HISTORY

The Dayton conversation made the trip - some things were so funny I started writing them down. Here are some lines that I recorded at Dayton. If you weren’t there you probably won’t understand this out of context. The experience with my friends, and meeting new ham friends from all over the world are the reason to go. Seeing all the new and old stuff is a side benefit. Now to the quotes:

“Last time I saw a mouth like that it had a hook in it.”

GPS: “Turn right now.” “DON’T LISTEN TO A MACHINE!!! DAMN IT JOHN THIS IS A SIDE WALK!!!!”

“Spirted.”

“Emergency black cherry juice run. Black cherry juice?”

Happy finish.

Page 6

regard as the essence of a Southern Gentleman. He never uttered a bad word about anyone and generously gave his time and resources in support of others. Ethyl’s sweet and sour cucumbers were a treat at Field Days that I think of every year.

As a point of reference in time FDR starting doing presidential broadcasts in 1933, only 2 years prior. The FCC was created by the Communications Act of 1934 - in 1936 there were 46,000 hams in the US. Three cents for postage sounds cheap but then lunch was a dime (cream peas on toast anyone?) and pennies were hard to come by during the Great Depression. Europe was still reeling from WWI and in Germany the seeds of WWII were sprouting from the repercussions of WWI and the Depression. Edwin H. Armstrong would not publish his classic paper describing FM until 1936.

There is no mention of a frequency but I’m fairly

W4DCW - Tink KanoyContinued from page 1

Continued on page 7

certain this would have been on 80 meters. Crystal operation was mandatory. It was common practice for a station to call CQ and then sign “CQ and tuning”. That meant tuning up and down the band for a response since few people would have a crystal on your frequency. Replies could be anywhere in the band so contacts were mostly hit or miss. In the 1930’s you had to make at least 3 contacts (CW, not phone!) in the 6 months prior to renewing your license and certify that you could meet all the current requirements for renewing your license.

Tink used a 58 tube as a detector and a 56 tube for audio output, almost certainly a regenerative circuit. The probable schematic is on Page 6. His transmitter eludes me a bit; the QSL reads “’59 tri tet osc 15 Watts”. A number 59 tube is a power pentode so I’m not sure what he meant by “’59 tri”. 15 Watts was a respectable amount of power then.

Tink did his QSL card neatly with a fountain pen (remember those?) and proudly added ARRL. I tried hard to read the comments: “Sorri I had to (unreadable), but I had to go to breakfast pronto. (more unreadable)”

At the time of this QSO Tink would have been 18 and had been licensed for only about a year (but the FCC was only a year old). Tink was station engineer of WSJS (29 years) and then WFDD (11 years). Tink was the main contact for the Moravian Mission in Honduras and Nicaragua and his medical phone-patches were responsible for saving many lives and limbs. He passed away August, 2010 and was 93 years old. This QSL will go into the files at FARC.

Regenerative circuit probably close to W4DCW’s 1935 receiver. Number 58 vacuum tube used as a regenerative detector and a number 56 tube as an audio amplifier. This was close to state-of-the-art for hams in 1935. This circuit didn’t appear in the ARRL Handbook until 1937. Circuit from http://www.ohio.edu/people/postr/bapix/30sregen.htm

I need to check on what the staff is doing under the table.

John assumes the position.

“Look at John sleeping there so peacefully. Laying there on his side, with his ear up. So carefree. Did you know that if you carefully pour a single tiny drop in his ear he'll pop up like he's drowning?”

“John bought a goat sacrificing kit (goat sold separately).”

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION QSO A SUCCESS - The May 2nd QSO between the McNair Elementary School in Brown’s Summit near Greensboro and the International Space Station was a rousing success. 2,800 students across Guilford County submitted questions of which 20 were selected to ask astronaut Tom Marshburn, a native of Statesville and a graduate of Davidson and Wake Forest. The ten minute pass permitted 16 of the 20 questions to be presented by students of the school which emphasizes STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. McNair Elementary is named after Dr. Ronald McNair, North Carolina native and NC A&T graduate who perished in the 1986 space shuttle explosion. ARISS – Amateur Radio and International Space Station, a joint program between NASA, ARRL and other Amateur Radio organizations – coordinated the QSO. The McNair ARISS contact was only the third in North Carolina over the past six years. Special thanks to the Greensboro Amateur Radio Association (GARA) and to RF Micro Devices in Greensboro for coordination over the past ten months in preparing for this event. RF Micro Devices also donated radio equipment to McNair Elementary so it now has a fulltime Ham Radio station.

MEDIA HITS – The McNair ARISS QSO was covered by three area television news operations and the NPR station at Wake Forest University, WFDD-FM.

Ghosts of Field Day Past

Diddle-de-Dah-de-DonThis month I went back to the banner I used in 2009. Yeah, I know, you didn’t notice. The one I had been using for the last few years didn’t print well in black & white.

I’m still hoping for a Hallicrafters HT-30 and a HT-33 (not 33A or 33B - just the 33 - it uses 4CX300’s). Also for a good cause (not for me) I’m looking for a cheap 6-meter multimode rig.
