raditional Solutions for the Active Modern
BodyTraining/Recovery
The serious athlete focuses attention on training and preparation
of the body: proper nutrition, core strength, a good training plan,
and body awareness. Some of the products that we offer will enhance
performance by stimulating blood flow to muscles and speeding
post-training recovery time. They are useful for relaxing tight
muscles, warming up cold muscles, and cooling down over-heated
muscles. Because these products are based on natural herbs and
applied externally, there is no need to worry about banned
substances being absorbed into the blood stream. When used
properly, these products are safe and effective!
Athletes and Sports Injuries
Acute injuries can occur when we push ourselves beyond our normal
limitations. Our Chinese herbal products focus not only on pain
relief, but increase energy flow and speed healing to get you back
competing in your sport as soon as possible. These products (along
with massage and acupuncture) can help in the treatment of
arthritis, shoulder tendonitis and bursitis, hip bursitis,
shoulder/wrist/ankle sprains or strains, muscle and tendon
tears.
Proper conditioning of the muscles is enhanced by the use of
certain oils and liniments to stimulate muscle and tissue by
bringing strong blood and energy flow to the area in preparation
for competition or a hard workout."Hit" Medicine
While the tradition of Hit Medicine originated with the martial
arts of the battlefield, it is applicable for anyone - whether
athlete, soldier, or backyard sports enthusiast - who needs
medicine to heal wounds and speed that healing for a quicker and
healthier recovery. Check out our section of herbs, jows, and
patent remedies that fall into this category of traditional Chinese
medicine.Click here.
Common Impact Injuries and Their TreatmentLiniments for Injury
Prevention
Posumon Oil works better than Icy Hot, Tiger Balm, and other muscle
rubs to help loosen up your muscles and prepare them for a good
workout. Putting it on calf muscles, hamstrings, any large muscle
that is a bit tight or requires a good warm-up and stretch before
your workout will benefit (and reduce, though not eliminate!) your
warm-up period.

is recommended for the use of bone fractures, dislocations, torn or
damaged ligaments, such as neck, ACL or Medial Collateral Ligament,
torn cartilage, such as the meniscus as well as torn tissue and
overstretched joints that become unstable. This formula is also
great for re-occurring sprains and fractures that are slow healing.
This combination of nine herbs helps the body to clear any residual
blood stagnation, promotes circulation, prevents atrophy, repairs
damaged tissue, tonifies the kidneys, which in turn, strengthens
and heals broken bones and encourages the body to heal
itself.
Bone-knitting powder has been used for centuries by martial arts
physicians and the warrior monks of Shaolin to treat injuries
sustained during combat and training. The herbs in this powder that
specifically strengthen the bones also strengthen the tendons and
ligaments. For this reason, bone-knitting powder can also be used
to treat recurring sprains due to over-stretched ligaments.
The vegetarian formula will be slightly less effective than the
traditional formulation. It is provided for anyone whose diet
restricts the intake of animal and/or insect matter. Keep in mind
that often a vegetarian diet can impede the healing of broken
bones.

used to treat extensive bruising of large muscle areas.
This is the single most useful herbal poultice for your first aid
trauma kit! Where ever you would use ice, use San Huang San
instead!

More Information:
When an injury occurs, blood will stagnate in the muscle tissue
and often does not reabsorb back into the system. The blood can
congeal and harden, adhering the muscle fibers together and
blocking normal circulation, creating pain and stiffness. Applying
ice can exacerbate this injury in the long term. San Huang San will
reduce inflammation and speed healing.
Directions & Ingredients:
Directions:
Pre-Mixed Poultice-
Apply thickly like cake frosting to the injury. Cover with gauze
pads or paper toweling and wrap with rolled gauze. Bandage firmly
in place, but not so tight as to restrict circulation. Leave in
place for several hours or overnight. For large muscle mass, like
hamstring, apply thinner layer and cover with gauze wrapping.
Pre-mix is in a base of pure petroleum jelly.
Powder-
Mix a small quantity of powder into Dit Da Jow, green tea or with
egg white to a thick paste-like consistency (egg white is
preferable for swelling due to ligament/tendon damage, like torn
meniscus). Then apply as above. Prepare only as much as you need
for each application.
Sam Kressin does an excellent job in this article describing how to
apply and when to use San Huang San.
Ingredients:
Da Huang (Rhizoma Rhei -Rhubarb)
Huang Qin (Radix Scutellaria Baicalensis - skullcap root)
Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri - phellodendron bark)
Pu Gong Ying (Herba Taraxaci Mongolici - dandelion)
Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardenia Jasmonoidis - gardenia)
Hong Hua (Flow Carthami Tinctorii - safflower)
Note: the Pre-Mixed San Huang San is mixed into a base of petroleum
jelly. Although less "natural" than beeswax as a base, we found
petroleum jelly to be preferable to beeswax because it is much
easier to remove and clean the skin after use.
Contents:
Powder comes in 2 sizes: 50g and 100g (4oz and 8oz jars)
The pre-mixed poultice comes in 2 oz, 4oz, and 8oz jars.

small applications and is small enough to fit into your first aid
kit.

Tendon Liniment is an alcohol-extracted herbal liniment, a
combination of warming herbs that relieve pain and speed healing of
chronic conditions or old injuries such as tendonitis, which
includes tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, shin splints, old sprains or
re-occurring problems made worse by cold and dampness. When heat
makes your injury feel better, this is the formula for you.
This unique blend of Chinese herbs works deep down into the tendons
to stimulate circulation and promote healing. Because of its
warming nature, it is unsuitable for recent injuries or tendons and
ligaments that are red, hot, or inflamed. It is normally used in
3rd stage, or late 2nd stage, tendon problems.
It doesn't just relieve the pain, it speeds the healing
process.
This custom formulation is made by the Modern Herb Shop and is more
potent than commercial formulas. It is hand made and aged a minimum
of 6 months to increase potency. The Extra Strength version has
been aged at least 18 months.
Indications:
Use it on chronic sprains and strains that never seem to
heal.
Tendonitis, tennis elbow, shin splints, other sore areas that are
constantly re-injured

with your fingers and continue to rub the liniment into the area

Iron Palm Dit Da Jow (Die Da Jiu,Dit Da Jao) (lit. "hit-fall
wine") is a customized blend of herbs specific for healing bruises
associated with Iron Palm training and is recommended for use in
combination with the Iron Palm soak. Iron Palm medicines are
formulated with herbs that facilitate healing, strengthen the
bones, tendons, and ligaments of the hand, and help open the energy
channels of the body leading the Qi from Dan Tien to the
hands.
This formula, passed on to us by Sifu Rik Kellerman ofTen Tigers
Kung Fu Academy, is strongly recommended for regular use during
Iron Palm Training. When used intermittently, it is an excellent
bruise-healing medicine.
Most bruises are usually shrugged off by athletes and martial
artists as minor injuries that will heal themselves. Over the
centuries, kung fu practitioners noticed that large bruises or
repeated bruising on one area sometimes created accumulations of
stagnant qi and blood that could cause serious health problems
years later. Trauma liniment was developed to disperse these
accumulations and treat sports injuries, thereby prolonging an
athlete's career and health.
Often a martial arts master blended his unique mixture of many
aromatic herbs such as myrrh and ginseng, which were combined to
stimulate circulation, reduce pain and swelling, and improve
healing for his students' injuries and wounds. The tradition became
known as hit medicine."Dit da jow" is the common spelling. However,
the correct term is "dit da jau" in Cantonese, and "die da jiu"
Mandarin.
Function:
This formula contains ingredients that stop pain, reduce swelling
and inflammation and disperse stagnant qi and blood. It is
comprised of cooling herbs to reduce swelling and inflammation as
effectively as ice and warming herbs that kill pain, promote
circulation, and break up accumulations of stagnant blood and
fluids.Decrease Pain, Swelling, Spasm
Increase Blood Flow and Tissue Healing Response
Break Blood Stasis and Clotting
Strengthen muscle, sinew (tendons, ligaments) and bone
Stop Internal Bleeding
Indications:
When do I use it?
- On sore spots caused by impact, whether they cause visible
bruising or not.
- Use it on sprains and strains.
- For muscles that are sore immediately after training (but not
sore from older injuries).Item#Item NameOur PriceQtyAdd

Dit Da Jow (Die Da Jiu,Dit Da Jao) (lit. "hit-fall wine") Bruise
Liniment is a customized blend of herbs that is thenumber one
remedy for bruises of all kinds. It is rubbed into the skin and
known for its ability to heal bruises, sprains and strains, carpal
tunnel inflammation, shin splints, and other injuries. A
traditional jow shouldn't provide any particular sensation when
being applied (except for a slight cooling sensation as the alcohol
evaporates). What you should notice is that your pain just seems to
disappear. It's not masked by local stimulus, instead the
obstruction of qi and blood is moved by the medicinal nature of the
substances in the liniment and your pain is gone. There is a saying
in Chinese- Tong Ze Bu Tong, Ze Tong Bu Tong - Where there is pain
there is no flow, where there is flow there is no pain.
Function:
Cooling herbs decrease swelling and inflammation as effectively as
ice. Warming herbs stop pain, promote circulation, and break up
accumulations of stagnant blood and fluids. This increases blood
flow and improves the healing response. Special herbs also
strengthen muscle, sinew (tendons and ligaments) and bone; and stop
internal bleeding.
Indications:
Use Dit Da Jow on sore spots caused by impact, whether they cause
visible bruising or not, sprains and strains, muscles that are sore
immediately after training (but not sore from older injuries),
joints sore due to arthritis, rheumatism,bi syndrome, and Delayed
Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS).
This formula was passed down through Hung-Gar practitioners from
Wong Fei-Hung's lineage, generation after generation, from Sifu to
student. Sifu Rik Kellerman ofTen Tigers Kung Fu Academy, a current
disciple and holder of the formula, was kind enough to provide
Modern Herb Shop with the opportunity to offer this formula to the
general public. It differs in characteristics from the Ten Tigers
Iron Palm formula by having a stronger qi-moving action, thus
making it's healing activity more potent.
This potent formula has brewed for more than 18 months.
Function:
This formula contains ingredients that stop pain, reduce swelling
and inflammation and disperse stagnant qi and blood. It is
comprised of cooling herbs to reduce swelling and inflammation as

Yunnan Baiyao () also known as Yunnan Paiyao [Jiaonang=
Capsules] has been extensively used and considered a sort of
miracle drug for wounds, pain, and hemorrhage. Unlike Western pain
drugs, it does not turn off pain centers in the brain, but instead
facilitates circulation, bringing oxygen to the injury.
It is useful for any type of open cuts and any kind of surgery. It
reduces recovery time for surgery by half because it mends injured
blood vessels. It does not interfere with Western sedative drugs,
so can be used the same day as surgery. By immediately activating
blood circulation, it helps resolve bleeding, pain, and swelling.
It heals oozing wounds and damaged blood vessels, while expelling
pus and counteracting toxins.
Indications:
Its primary application is acute traumatic bleeding, where the
powder is applied directly to the cut. The product is antibacterial
as well as homeostatic. Cuts heal quickly with even a single
application, and with a butterfly bandage it can help seal smaller
wounds that might otherwise require stitches. In various clinical
studies, it has shown to reduce clotting time by 33% to 55%. The
powder form is more appropriate for topical application in
traumatic bleeding, while the capsules are meant to be taken
internally. It is used for traumatic swelling or bruising, or for
other blood disorders including hemangiosarcoma, thrombocytopenic
purpura and leukemia. It is also used to inhibit internal bleeding
due to trauma, surgery or cerebral hemorrhage.
Features:Stops bleeding, dispels blood stasis, disperses swelling,
clears heat, resolves toxins, relieves pain.
Helps the flesh regenerate and prevents blood stasis and infections; reduces scarring.
Treats chronic stomachache, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer bleeding; sore and swelling throat.
Treats hemoptysis caused by bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchiectasia, and tuberculosis.
Treats all gynecological blood stasis, including amenorrhea, irregular menstruation, excessive menses, uterine bleeding and leucorrhoea, and postpartum blood stasis.
Treats hot sores, oozing sores, and poisoned sores.

his rib fracture formula, taken as a decocted tea, is composed
of herbs that specifically target the ribs and chest area. It
speeds healing and significantly reduces pain.
Indications:
This formula should be used only for rib pain resulting from a
fracture with no complications. It can also be used when
intercostal muscles are damaged from an impact injury.
This formulation is very strong and specific for ribs. Taking rib
fracture formula can significantly reduce the pain, ease your
breathing, and help speed the healing time; especially if used in
conjunction with Yunnan Paiyao plaster or Wu Yang plaster.
It should not be used for rib pain due to internal causes such as a
cough, lung abscess, lung cancer, and the like.
Directions:
One package of herbs makes 1 cup of tea.
Decoct the herbs by cooking with water to make a tea. Take 1 cup of
tea daily for 3-4 days or until all pain has been gone for one
week.
Decoction:
Place 1 bag of herbs in a stainless-steel, glass, or porcelain
cooking pot. Add 5-6 cups of water. Cover the pot and bring to a
boil. When the water is boiling, reduce the flame and simmer
uncovered for 35-40 minutes or until about 1 cup of liquid remains.
Strain out the herbs and discard. Cool to room temperature. Drink
one cup per day until all pain has been gone for one week.
Traditionally, you drink 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup at
night. (between meals).
Optional:
Take Die Da Wan hit pills for 2-3 days immediately following the
rib fracture (1 pill, 2x day, morning and evening). Then begin this
formula. Use Yunnan Paiyao or Wu Yang plasters to aid in reducing
pain, but take care not to burn the skin through over-use or if
your skin is sensitive.
Do not take:
- if the rib has punctured a lung.
- if you are pregnant or nursing.
- if you suspect there is internal bleeding.
- if there are other complications to your injury.
- If you are taking blood thinners or any type of heart
medication.
- If you are taking any type of anti-seizure medication.
Ingredients:
Dan Shen (Salvia), Qing Pi (immature tangerine peel), Chenpi (dried
tangerine peel), Mo Yao (myrrh), Zhi Shi (bitter orange), Xiang Fu
(nut grass rhizome), Chuan Lain Zi (pagoda tree fruit), Chai Hu
(bupleurum), Lulu Tong (Fructus liquidambaris taiwanieanae), Mu

frying pan and cover with whiskey or vodka. Cook over a low flame
until mixture thickens and turns dark brown. Then add a tablespoon
of honey towards the end. Apply while warm but be careful not to
burn the skin. Cooking with alcohol increases circulation-enhancing
& warming effect. This method is preferable if the discomfort
is exacerbated by cold.
Apply paste to affected area and cover with gauze pads or paper
toweling, followed by a wrapping of rolled gauze.
Wrap tightly enough to press the poultice against the skin but not
so tightly as to restrict circulation.
Poultice can be left on for up to 24 hours. Best use is 24 hours
on, 24 hours off for several days. This allows the skin to breathe.
For overstretched ligaments use this way for up to 2 weeks.
Many people cannot go to work with a poultice on their wrist or
ankle. If this is the case, leave it on overnight and allow skin to
breathe during the day.

Tendon Warming Soak contains warming herbs that strongly increase
local circulation and drive cold and damp out of injured tissue.
Many of these herbs also reduce pain. It should be used only where
the muscle or joint is stiff, painful, and sensitive to cold.
Do not use if there is any residual heat or inflammation in the
area. If use of this soak increases the pain, then it is usually
because there is some residual inflammation. Discontinue and try
more neutral or cooling remedies.
This formula was created by Tom Bisio.
ut herbs in a pot large enough to cover the injured area. Add 1-2
gallons of water. There must be enough room in the pot to cover the
injured area. If the injury is to the foot or hand, enough water
should be added to cover the ankle or wrist as well. Cover the pot
and bring the liquid to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 25-45
minutes. Remove the pot from the stove. If the injury is to an
extremity, you can bathe the affected part in the steam as the
liquid cools. This warms the area and allows the steam to penetrate
the superficial tissues. When the soak has cooled sufficiently- it
is warm but not uncomfortably hot- soak the injured part for 15-20
minutes. If the injured area does not fit into the pot, soak towels
in the liquid, let them cool briefly, and put them over the
affected area. The towels will cool fairly quickly, so you will
need several to keep a warm, penetrating heat on the injury for
15-20 minutes. After using the soak, dry the skin and keep it warm
and away from cold or drafts. Cover the pot. The soak can be used
once or twice a day for up to 7 days. Simply reheat the liquid to a
sufficiently warm temperature. There is no need to boil it again.
As long as you keep the pot covered and reheat the soak every day,
the liquid will not get moldy.
Leave the herbs in the soak to increase the strength of the herbal
mixture.
Vinegar and alcohol are often added to herbal soaks to enhance
their therapeutic effect. Add a quart of rice wine or vinegar to
the soak after you have simmered the herbs and removed the pot from
the stove. Vinegar softens spasms in the muscles and tendons and
"smooths out" the flow of energy through the injured area. Alcohol
warms tissue and increases the local circulation by moving qi and
blood through the blood vessels and meridians. Warnings:
FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY.
Do not apply to red, swollen, or inflamed areas.

Discontinue use if skin irritation develops.
Avoid contact with the eyes or mucous membranes.

Primarily for chronic tendon (sinew) injuries, this poultice is
ideal for sprains or bone fractures where the swelling and
inflammation are gone but residual pain and stiffness remain. It
promotes the healing of over-stretched ligaments and is
particularly useful for old wrist or ankle sprains where
over-stretched ligaments cause complications; and also where the
joint is more painful in cold and damp weather.
Indications:
For bone, stage 3-4; For tendon, stage 3 Warming w/ cold
complications.
Use only after all signs of inflammation are gone.
Contains warming ingredients that strongly stimulate circulation to
damaged tissue.
