Formula Hybrid
International Competition
May 4, 5, 6, 2009
09 annualthird
We are thrilled to have 30 cars competing this year.
The competition is the result of the hard work of many people at Dartmouth and
beyond. We are grateful to all our sponsors, judges, event volunteers, and supporters.
Most of all, we are indebted to the enthusiasm of all the students who have taken up
the Formula Hybrid challenge. We are delighted that they are directing their ingenuity
and creativity to advancing hybrid technologies, as we believe that ideas developed
for competitions today may lead to everyday applications tomorrow. This event, the
third annual Formula Hybrid competition, is another step in the growing movement
to engineer new automotive solutions.
We are already planning the 2010 Formula Hybrid Competition. We look forward to
seeing you there.

For over a decade, Dartmouth engineering students participated in the
annual Formula SAE competition. In 2003 a team of engineering students
decided to test their knowledge of electric motors and the role they could
play in formula racecars. The team reasoned that because electric motors
deliver higher torque at low speeds than do internal combustion engines,
a hybrid could offer competitive advantages in a few of the Formula
SAE events.
The Dartmouth team converted a former Formula SAE car with a traditional
combustion engine into a hybrid vehicle, overcoming numerous technical
challenges along the way. One of the most difficult aspects was making all
the pieces fit. Despite the smaller size of the hybrid gasoline engine, there
are more components to a hybrid drivetrain, including the electric motor,
motor controller, energy storage system (accumulator), various high-power
voltage converters, and computerized control systems. But the greatest
obstacle of all was that hybrid cars could not meet newly revised Formula
SAE regulations. So the Dartmouth team decided to create a whole new
competition: Formula Hybrid.
Led by Doug Fraser and Wynne Washburn of Thayer School of Engineering
at Dartmouth and endorsed by SAE and IEEE, Formula Hybrid has become an
annual event that continues to gain momentum. From six teams and 60 students
in 2007 to this year‘s 30 teams and 400 students from five countries, Formula
Hybrid is widening the road to energy-efficient automotive engineering.
formula 09hybrid
What is Formula Hybrid? The Road to Formula HybridThe Formula Hybrid™ International Competition challenges undergraduate
and graduate students to design and build hybrid racecars and compete in
a multi-event program. The open-wheel, single-seat cars must conform to a
set of rules—formulas—that emphasize, encourage, and promote drivetrain
innovation and fuel efficiency.
Organized by Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, Formula
Hybrid carries the endorsement of the Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc.
(SAE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE).
The Formula Hybrid competition builds on the highly successful Formula SAE
program by adding an extra layer of complexity. Like Formula SAE events, the
Hybrid competition includes autocross, endurance events, an acceleration
test, and judging of car design and marketing presentations. But in addition,
Formula Hybrid demands completion of
the endurance event on a fixed amount
of fuel—a challenge that proves difficult
to master. The competition gives teams
the opportunity to demonstrate and test
their solutions and glean new ideas for
the future. 09

Hybrids come in many
flavors. Not all use
electricity to accumulate
energy. Students at
Brigham-Young University
have developed a hybrid
racecar with a hydraulic
energy accumulator system.
Although this car does
not meet the requirements
for entry into the Formula
Hybrid competition, it will
be on static display in the
North Garages.
