FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF MEDIA

How is ‘Abduction’ like (or unlike) other real media texts?

Camera Shots

Camera shots play a significant part in the movie as it indicates the importance of a particular shot because in a way, it backs up the monologue. In ‘Attack of the Block’ the medium shot is used because the character is the one speaking therefore the main focus is on him just like in ‘Abduction’ the main focus is on Ellie as she looks gloomy and remote.

CAMERA ANGLESA high angle shot highlights the unimportance of the specific object in the movie and also enhances the vulnerability of the subject. Ellie is being carried away by her kidnapper out of her free will and as they are slowly retracting away from the camera, it makes the object inferior and that satisfies the stereotype that people have of the characters that are perceived as the “bottom of the food chain” in terms of media (binary structure).

SOUNDIn our movie, we inserted sounds such a woman screaming to replace Ellie’s (played by Akua Ntiamoah) to an actual scream because the scream from the original recording sounded a bit faint and indistinct. For our blooper reel, we used Labrinth’s “Express Yourself” to show that through the hard work, we also had moments where me messed up and laughed just like any other movie. We also used tense music to build up the suspense and tension within the movie and to get the audience sitting at the edge of their seats.

Mise En SceneMise en Scene is the props used to give a more realistic effect to the storyline. Mise en scene is a French term and originates in the theatre. It means, literally, "put in the scene." They aid and enhance the purpose of the scene as it gives it more of a practical and actual effect.

NarrativeOur Storyline is like every mainstream storyline because Torodov’s theory is

used to execute the storyline effectively. We mainly focused on the elements of the binary structure because the perception and observation from our target audience is the key thing. ‘Attack of the Block’ very distinct from our own movie because although same techniques are used, the narrative and storyline is a lot more different. We attract the same age group, however because we use the same colloquial language as well as age cast however our movie includes an all black cast which is an usual element.

CHALLEGES THE GENREThe way ‘Abduction’ challenges the genre is firstly, we have

an all black cast. We don’t have the “pretty, blue eyed blonde who helplessly screams for help but the complete the opposite that a typical main character would execute in an actual Hollywood movie.
