he Balearean Boc is an ancestral species present in Mallorca for morethan 5.000 years. After suffering a problem of miscegenation, theBalearic Government is actively assisting in its recovery and conserva-tion as an endemic animal of the island. This process has led to therecovery of a unique hunting trophy all around the world and itsrecognition by the Safari Club International. The Balearean Boc is awild goat that inhabits the Tramuntana range. It has a reddish fur, ablack cross on its back, a black beard and horns that grow sideways. Itis a medium-size goat whose horns grow up to 90 cm.

o talk about the partridge shootings in Formentor means to talk about adifferent concept of this hunting modality. In Spain, this activity takesplace in large extentions of land where the partridges appear in groupsfrom small hills. In Formentor, the lines are situated at the bottom of the mountains ofthe Tramuntana range, facing the rocks. Beaters surprise the partridgeshidden in the grass and bushes and these begin their flight attempting topass over the line of shooters. In this way, high and long shots that testthe skills of the shooters are usual. Also, one characteristic is the powerand speed of the birds, a feature that results in it being a very sportingshoot. Formentor has the benevolence of the Mediterranean climate. A veryimportant condition that permits the hunting season to run fromSeptember to May, usually with blue skies and very little rainfall. The Formentor concept is distinctive for its hunting but also for itsorganization based on good taste and exquisite conditions.

alk-up shootings take place in 300 hectares located on the plain, in thecentre of the valley. The forest -mostly composed of pines, oaks holmsand low bushes- is the usual hideaway of partridges and pheasants, eventhe woodcocks. These species are wild in Formentor, where there arelarge populations of them, which ensures the development of huntingin its most natural environment.The woodcock is the most appreciated bird when we talk about walk-up. This migratory bird comes to Mallorca getting away from the colderclimates of the north and east of Europe, finding in Formentor theperfect shelter among pines and oak woods. The last and first months in the year are ideal for the woodcock hunt,although this modality is possible practically all the year with a forcedbreak in the summer months.

s a hunting and fishing combined offer, Formentor offers the KingSancho Balearic Slam. This is a recognition for hunters and also forfisherman who are capable of completing the circuit of activities thatdetermines the regulation. That is, the capture of a big game trophy,the Balearean Boc; the capture of a small game species; and the captureof a fish in a deep-sea fishing day. For this purpose, the participant hasup to 12 months since the first species is captured until the circuit iscompleted. The Majorcan Big Game Preserves Association holds the organizationof this competition, which has the support of the SCI. This award takes its name from the King Sancho of Majorca, whointroduced red-legged partridge, the pheasant, and the francolin to theBalearic Islands in the 13th century, when Mallorca was a Kingdom.Until then, hunting was not a leisure activity and it was hardly ever prac-ticed outside the nobility and royalty. As a pioneer of the vision thatthe hunt could be compatible with the conservation of the environ-ment, we pay him tribute with a prize within reach of not many.
