Learning Objectives
What is Assessment:
the process of gathering, interpreting, recording, and using information about pupils’ responses to an educational task. (Harlen, Gipps, Broadfoot, Nuttal,1992)
Before we define Formative Assessment
Assessment
Formative Summative
“the end year or end of term assessment to see whether students have learned any set of instructional outcomes; thereby making a pass
fail decision.”
Summative Assessment
“Information communicated to the learner that is intended to modify his or her thinking or behavior for the purpose of
improving learning”
Formative Assessment
“A systematic process to continuously gather evidence and provide feedback about learning while instruction is under
way”
Formative Assessment
Formative assessment aims at improving the students learning process by indicating the students’ deficiencies in learning and suggesting how to improve the gap.
Summative assessment:
assessment of Learning
Formative assessment:
assessment for learning.

Types of Formative Assessment
Students maintain a log: where they record their learning respond to a lesson regarding their
understanding. The teacher can collect some of the logs at the
end of the instruction to further reinforce the instruction as required.
1. Learning /Response Logs
Students practice a presentation model with peer faeedback.
This will enhance their presentation skills and knowledge of subject matter.
Rubrics for presentation should be provided beforehand.
2. Practice Presentation
To challenge students depth of knowledgeQuestions of higher order are asked with
students like Explain, justify, imagine or defend Feedback is given to improve them Questions may be given in the form of
scenario
3. Questions
Students reflect on their learning by answering to the difficult questions.
Self/Peer Assessment Quizzes
The teacher presents a question. Students think for 20-30 seconds. And then share with their colleague .They come to a common understandingThen they share with the class.
5. Think-Pair-Share
The teacher says to sum up the important concept and jot it down.
The work done can be discussed in the class
6. One Minute Paper
Once core knowledge is given to the students, students are asked how they will apply it in different practical situations/scenarios.
7. Transfer and Apply
Importance of Formative Assessment
Formative word means :
Formative word means :
relating to formation, development, or growth
provides feedback and information during the instructional processMeasures student progressallows to “rethink” and then “redeliver” that
material to ensure students are on track
Primary focus is to identify areas that may need improvement
Typically not graded (no summative component to it).
Feedback is a necessary component to it.
