Innovations at Forgotten FarmsInnovations at Forgotten Harvest Farms along with the support of volunteers who recorded over 11,000 service hours in 2016 resulted in a harvest of over 600,000 pounds of nutrient-rich produce.

Four Season FarmingOur new greenhouse allows us to harvest crops throughout the year. A vertical farming experiment was conducted last fall resulting in the harvest of cherry and grape tomato specialty crops of over 1,000 pounds. The winter kale crop planted last November is thriving this winter.

Sustainable Farm PracticesOur successful implementation of a “cover crop system” over the past two seasons has improved the soil health of the farm and reduced both irrigational needs and chemical herbicide applications. The system will be expanded to 11 more

acres of land this year enriching our harvest of kale, cabbage and broccoli.

Fields of rye were planted this fall. Upon maturation in the spring, the rye will be “rolled down” and serve as a healthy mulch bed for planting and the harvest of farm-fresh produce.

Michigan Veterans Foundation Tyrone Chatman, Vietnam Veteran and Executive Director, Michigan Veterans Foundation, has led the Detroit Veterans Center for 11 years and paved the way for a relocation of the current facility to a new 42,000 square foot center that will offer Veteran services and house over 100 homeless Veterans. While 8% of the country’s population represent those who have served our country, it is estimated that Veterans constitute 25-35% of the homeless population.

The all-volunteer staff of the Veterans Support Center, Vietnam Veterans of America – Chapter 154 offers Veterans support services ranging from food for veterans and their families, accredited Veteran’s benefit counseling services and a Michigan Vietnam Veterans Traveling Memorial that honors the 2,654 Michigan servicemen and women killed in the war.

Carl Darling (r) served in the Iraq war. He is legally- blind and serves as a regular volunteer at the Vietnam Veterans of America – Chapter 154. Last year, the center provided fresh, healthy Forgotten Harvest food to over 1,200 families. Gil Claunch (l) serves as the Food Pantry Director.

Noon Chow… Veterans are served three meals a day with food provided by Forgotten Harvest at the Detroit Veterans Center. Veterans housed at the center undergo an 18-24 month program to help them return to society through professional guidance and Veteran-to- Veteran reinforcement. Forgotten Harvest provided 65,438 pounds of nutritious food to the Michigan Veterans Foundation in 2016.

Our fleet of 35 trucks serve as a lifeline for thousands of individuals in need of food throughout metro Detroit. The Detroit Pistons have ensured that our mission will continue with the gift and commitment to fund the cost, maintenance and operation of three new single axle trucks over the course of three years. The first was awarded at a Thanksgiving Dinner hosted by the Pistons for Forgotten Harvest agencies at Eastern Market. “We are pleased to partner with Forgotten Harvest in an effort to help fight hunger and assist those in need throughout our communities,” said Arn Tellem, Vice Chairman for Palace Sports & Entertainment. “Food transport capabilities are vital to their food rescue operation and we are proud to add another truck to their fleet and resources that help streamline their processes.”

Our Best Wishes For The New Year and Heartfelt Thanks For Your Support In 2016We move forward into our 27th year of service to the community with the firm conviction that we can significantly reduce food insecurity in metro Detroit. Through this work, we will meet the mandate of our Vision statement that sees us as a vital part of a consortium of partners dedicated to creating a healthier and more productive life for individuals in need.

Our confidence is derived from the outstanding partnerships we have been able to form over the years, like the Veterans organizations featured in this edition. The many agencies we serve complement our core mission to fight hunger and food waste with the provision of economic, emotional and spiritual sustenance.

Last year, we evaluated every aspect of our organization’s unique food rescue model with the help of experts in the field of food access and supply mapping, food distribution logistics and facility assessment. Our goal is to ensure that Forgotten Harvest remains a significant force in the well-being of our neighbors and valued partner for the diverse spectrum of people and organizations who share in our vision of a healthier community.

Sincerely,

Our Vision:

“ We envision communities that work together to end hunger…creating individual, neighborhood, economic, and environmental health”

Detroit Pistons team members and Coach Stan Van Gundy brought smiles, Thanksgiving dinner and our new truck to the tip-off celebration of their “Season of Giving” celebration hosted in honor of Forgotten Harvest recipient families.

Palace Sports & Entertainment Vice Chairman Arn Tellem accepts our highest honor, a “Harvey” award, from Forgotten Harvest Chairman Hannan Lis (l) and CEO, Kirk Mayes.
