D u f f . I am indebted, lo not only all he had gathered together, but for much

assistance in procuring more data. Dr. C. I f . LuRue, Farrottsvitte, T,;n.;

Mrs. II'. IF. DonCarlos, Atlantic, Iowa: Mrs. Emma Chapman. Craig,

Col.: Mrs. John'York, Columbus, O.; Mrs. Ersa Beatty and' 'Mrs. James

Fo the memory of my grandmother, Mary Farrett Thomas, I witn lo

G. Of Elinor and Sariann we know but little. One of them married a man by the name of Rose.

Jacob Parrett, a descendant of Samuel the first, during the Civ iLWar enlisted as a private in Co. K , 33rd O. V. I. For his bravery he was promote^-to 2 n d ; t o atJSavaniiah, Ga., June 3, 1865.

V . G E O R G E P A R R E T T was killed in the Revolutionary War.

V I . J O S E P H P A R R E T T was born in Virginia in 1760. In 1 775 he enlisted as a private in Captain Jonathan Clark's Company, Colonel Peter Muhlenberg's 8th Virginia Regiment, and served until December 25. 1777. when he was made Lieutenant and Purchasing Commissary ot Provisions and Clothing for the Army at Valley Forge. He was in the battles of lirandywine and Germantown and at the taking of Cornwallis, and was discharged in November. 1781. at Woodstock, Va„ having served five years and ten months. For the above he was allow ed a pension and 200 acres of bounty land. He married Sarah Wendel and there were seven children. He moved to Ohio about IS12 and settled in Faiette County, about live miles north of Washington C. H . He later in life married Anna Hartman from Clinton County, and lived at Wilmington until his death, which occurred August 28, 1847. Owing to the fact that he had a military funeral and there was to be a salute fired over his grave, he was refused burial in the cemetery [Quaker] and was buried just outside the wall in the old Morris woods. We have been told that as the procession came down the street the small bovs sang;

V i t . F R E D E R I C K P A R R E T T , the youngest son of Frederick and Barbara Parrett was born in 1764. At the age of seventeen he was called to service at the siege of Yorktown. He only got to ss-rve a short time, but was permitted to witness the surrender of Cornwall.s, which he often described to his grandchildren as a wonderful scene. After he came to Ohio he wore his Revolutionary uniform at a big celebration ... Chili.cothe given at the time of the Harrison and T i l e r campaign! borne of my earliest recollections are of the stories of the Revolutionary war which my grandmother told me, as told to her by her grandfather. His son Joseph wrote and read a paper at a Parrett reunion in the year 1859, in which he gives an account of Ins fathers war experiences and mentions incidents in the life of his grandfather who lived to a good old age. After the Revolution he was Ensign in the Virginia M.I.tia and Ins commissions signed by Henry Lee and Edmund Randolph are still in existence. He is numbered among the soldiers of 1812. M r W A Parrett has a roster of his company, but as there are no dates on it we do not know whether 'it was ot a company at that time or of a companv in the militia

Frederick Parrett ,n. Elizabeth Keller. Of her we know but little From an old paper we find that she was the daughter of Johann or John Kellar and that the others in her family were: Mary, George. Daniel. Jacob, Henrv. David, and David Kee Letters from Daniel Kellar concerning his father's estate tell that he (Daniel) lived in Green County, I ennessce.

In IS 12, John, the oldest son of Frederick and Elizabeth Kellar Parrett and who at that tune was married and had two children, came to Ohio, »liere some of l.S father s brothers had already settled. The next vear Frederick came to Ohio on horseback to buy land for his son John. He nas so pleased with the country he went back determined to sell his Virginia farm and bring the remainder of his family to this state. So on August 26. 1814. he sold his possessions at public sale The original paper, stating the terms of this sale, is still In existence and reads as follows-

I he condition, on which the properly of ihe Subscriber will be sold this dm are as follows: I he highest bidder is the purchaser. .1 credit oi nine months will b* given on all sums exceeding twenty-four shillings (excepting herein alter excepted) the purchaser giving noles with such scanty a, the subscriber approves this dav ana' before the goods bought are taken away. .Ill the sums not exceeding twenty-lour shillings must be paid with cash in hand. The salt ivill be sold for cash only Some articles will be excepted for ihe use of ihe subscriber lor about ten day, which will he made known by the crier al every article so sold. So bids less than a penny will be accepted. Disputes arising between bidders concerning bids, will be decided by the crier. Persons buying and nol performing as required by the conditions, shall have such goods so bought set uf and sold again, and il they then sell for le'S Ihe first purchaser shall pay the deficiency. I will not be answerable lor any properly sold alter delivered lo Ihe purchaser by the crier.

"I'REDERI C K FARR E TT." •'August 26, 181-1."

A line added to the above said the sale was continued the next dav on the same terms. Also there ,s an agreement between Parrett and |o„es as to the sale of the farm. In tins he reserves the plot used for the family burying ground. Thev came vest, as al did then, In horseback and wagons. Aunt Barbara Harper was onlv five years old at that time, but she often told of the gold they brought in a trunk on a car and upon winch she used to ride when she was tired of walking. They arrived in October. 1814, and purchased the land and erected a home. Tins is now owned n Mrs. P. J . Parrett. I l„s being on the Chillicothe pike, he for awhile kept a tavern and some of the old account books are In the possession of M r . VV. A. Parrett,

Lyndon, Ohio. When his wife died .., 1821 he purchased an acre of ground adjacent to the old church at South Salem, for a burial place for his wife. This he afterwards gave to the church. Here he and many of his familv lie today. His children for the most part lived and died in this vicinity and their genealogy is as follows:

A . John, the eldest son, was born February 24, 1786, and married Catherine Wendei January 12, 1808. I wo children were born to them, Eli and Sarah, before thev came to Ross County, Ohio, in August, 1812. The next year he moved his family to rayette County to the farm where he spent the rest of his life His death occurred Aug. 20, 1859. Notice that the "chest of traners" once given to the older children now h- omes i "burou" and that Catherine's "patestrt" is "Vransh." Also note prk:• given in these accounts. While these dmv rys no doubt seem meager to us. T * r ri thev were very ample to "comment e funis." Perhaps it would interest you to f - ar that "Katy." as she was called, was the little lady of the family. Her sister Barbara once said that for some uncxplaioable reason the other members ot tli. family would always "fetch and cany for "Katy.

I X . There was another daughter of Frederick and Barbara Edwards Parrett. but l i t t le is known of her. She married a man by the name of Shoemaker and moved to Per ry County, O h i o . I have been told that one of her daughters married a man by the name of Poorman.

There are many gaps to be fi l led in this history, and I presume many corrections. I am giv ing it to you as it has been sent to me by the different branches. If the book falls into the hands of those who know of omissions, send a letter to myself or the Secretary of the Parret t Association, we w i l l onlv be too glad to write between the lines. In fact, a l l births, deaths and marriages should be reported to the Secretary and w i l l be added each year.

I have been asked the questions, W h y are you doing this? and W h a t good w i l l it do? A great man once said, "People w i l l not look f o r w a r d to posterity, who never look backward to their ancestors." D o we not owe these ancestors much ? Sliall w e forget who blazed the t ra i l , broke and drained the soil, erected churches and >chooU and smoothed the way for us? W a s not the message to the prophet, " f e l l \ r your children of it, and let your children tel l their children, and their children •uiafhir (feneration'' ? Eet me close the book by quoting a few lines f rom a toast I heard riot long ago given to the O h i o Pioneers:

Ah daughters brave and strong and real. Ah sons of days lont/ past. I he glow of altar fires yon watched, down all the years is cast.

And we shall pray on bended knees to keep the light aglow. That burned to f reedom, Love and God. on hearthstones long ntj<,
