Celebrating Diversity

Indonesia is full of diversity. We have various cultures, ethnicities, languages

and religions. From our diversity, comes great richness and strength. This

diversity and our multicultural background is reflected in our books—fiction,

nonfiction, children’s books, comics—and cross-media products.

“Diversity” is a term that can have multiple interpretations, but at its core, it’s

all about creating “variety”. Our publishers focus on diversity through ensuring

that we offer a variety of perspectives to match a great variety of readers on a

global level. Diversity from a global perspective means, readers from various

parts of the world want content published that is relevant to them. The future

of the publishing industry depends on how prepared they are to serve readers

in these emerging economies.

Between increased cultural awareness and technological growth, we are able

to be more connected than ever before. In the publishing world, we play a key

role in weaving threads that hold together the global community by helping

to fasten different cultures around the world closer to one another. Just like

the future of our world, the future of our industry depends on diversity and

intercultural cooperation.

Generally speaking, Indonesian publishers have never stopped innovating

and deepening their endeavours as they seek to implement the go-global

strategy, thereby bringing about quite a few new highlights in books, digital

Ibn Sina or Avicenna loved to learn Al-Quran and various sciences since his childhood, especially the science of medicine. Ibn Sina had also written numerous books that would become mandatory reading for prospective doctors.

Aida Kania Lugina or Inong was born on August, 17th, the same day with The Independence Day in Indonesia. She loves to observe her surroundings in silent contemplation about life so that she can be a little bit more grateful and sincere. Some of her friends often treat her as a “shaman” because she more likely than not gives the right answer to their questions, no matter how absurd some of these questions may be. She is a cat lover since childhood and treats them like her siblings.

Ana P. Dewiyana started her career as a child’s book author since 2002. Most of her books are published by Pelangi Mizan. Some of the books she has written include the Encyclopedia for Muslim Boys (team), Halo Toddlers, Rising Animal Stories, Know a Lot, I Love My Al-Quran (team), Wow, Amazing! In 2012, she was chosen as the Indonesian delegation to take part in illustrating a project for Children Folktales in Southeast Asian Countries and Korea by SEAMEO. She was shortlisted as a finalist in 2012th Singtel Asian Picture Book Award for Cap Go Meh and in 2016, her work for Wuusss… Angin Membawa Telur Terbang won her a Grand Prize Samsung KidsTime Author Award. She also represented SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) Indonesia chapter as the Illustrator Coordinator. Currently, she is participating in the Room to Read Illustrator Workshop as a facilitator.

Andari Deswandhy was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. She attended the British International School Jakarta for 12 years before moving to Deerfield Academy, a boarding school in Deerfield, MA, USA, in 2015. In 2014, she participated in a 3-week class at Columbia University for creative writing. Andari is currently in the 10th grade.

Reading and writing have always been a large part of her childhood. When Andari was younger, her parents encouraged her to express all her ideas and feelings on paper, whether it is about an activity with friends, or an experience she encountered while on holiday. Writing quickly became a hobby, and led to her contribution for a school magazine.

Cecillia Hidayat is an illustrator, art director, and graphic designer. Living with her husband in Ubud, Bali, she frequently spends her days doodling and staring at the rice fields. An introverted person, Cecil finds it difficult to talk and express her feeling verbally. Therefore, she chooses drawing and painting to voice her opinion. Some of her works represent traditional culture and feminism, as well as social issues around her.

Al Jazari: The Inventor of Water-raising Machine

Al Jazari’s passion for working with and creating mechanical tools started early on when he was just a young boy. He went on to develop numerous inventions in his lifetime, but his most significant accomplishment must be his hydropower machines. Al Jazari’s life purpose was to create innovations that would help people in their daily lives.

Arif Hidayah was born in Bandung, November 1987. He studied Indonesian literature at Padjajaran University. Arif has loved writing since he was a child. Several of his works were published by Pelangi Mizan, such as Story of Honeybee, Story of Hud-Hud, Story of Elephant, 3D Discovery Series, and many more. A lot of his stories speak about the virtues of Islam. He also wrote soundtracks for some translated children books. Today, in addition to writing, Arif works as a photographer in one of men’s fashion company in Bandung.

Selly Astari Octaviani was born in Bandung on October 26th, 1991. Her interest in writing bloomed when she was still in elementary school. It was her reason to enter the Journalistic Science of Communication Science Department in Pajajaran University in 2009. During her college days in 2013, she started working in Tempo Bandung and PJTV. At the end of 2014, she joined Pelangi Mizan as a contributor. Yos is a mathematics teacher and a part-time translator. Although his day job requires him to deal with numbers every day, he still has time for his first love: literature. He was a group administrator for a goodreads.com group named Sci-Fi Indonesia while finishing his first novel. I Belog is his first published picture book.

Dewi Tri is an illustrator and a graphic designer. Children are the source of her inspirations. She received international recognition for her works such as Pertunjukan Besar Barongan Kecil, which was shortlisted in the Nami Concours Korea in 2015, Pandu, The Ogoh-ogoh Maker which was the 1st Runner-up at the 2015 Scholastic Asian Picture Book Award, and Pinisi which won 2nd Winner Samsung KidsTime Author Award in 2016. Recently, one of her book, which adapts folktale from Bali entitled I Belog was launched at the Asian Festival Children Content 2017 in Singapore.

Mira Widhayati graduated from Bandung Institute of Technology’s Visual Communication Design. Mira is a member of Kelompok Pencinta Bacaan Anak (Society for the Advancement of Children’s Literature) and has represented Indonesia in workshops overseas. Initially illustrating short stories for children’s magazine Bobo, she continues to illustrate picture books while finding joy in storytelling.
