Process titanium
The physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics make titanium complex to machine. Its low conductivity can affect the rapid heat evacuation generated by its machining, which focuses on the tool level and the cutting edge. Titanium is likely to develop inserted edges causing cracks and a premature wear of the tools, resulting expensive machining and tooling costs.
Given these constraints, Fives has been working on the chips evacuation, the rigidity of the machine, the 5-axis milling head capabilities and the safe process, to bring dedicated ultimate solutions.

Thanks to the Forest-Liné Modumill Ti and the Forest-Liné Powermill Ti, Fives offers adaptive solutions for titanium.
To ensure parts quality, the high pressure cooling system, up to 70 bars pressure, allows efficient cooling of the cutting cool edges and effective removal chips rate which would otherwise tend to stay around cutting tools due to low cutting feed and material characteristics.
The patented “constant overhang ram”, the largest section ram used in the machine tool industry, offers the conducive milling conditions whatever its position.
The “in-house” design and manufacture of 5-axis milling heads, provides high torque up to 2500 Nm (1843 lb-ft) with rigid and compact structure.
To apply the requested applications, the safety of the process is essential. The Geometric Fives Axis Control System helps to determine the status of the geometry of the machine with an accurate description of temperature variation and within 15 minutes.
The solution can be developed together with collision detection device, video camera supervision and 3D scan of the part.
The patented “constant overhang” ensures a high stiffness and accuracy of the machine for titanium processing whatever the position.
