Forest in Vietnam
Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 2
• Vietnam has 16.2 million ha. (40 million acres) of forest, of which 10.2 million ha are considered natural forest.
• In 1992, Vietnam imposed laws to control logging within its borders. This leads to manufacturers began relying on other countries for their timber supply, fueling illegal/unsustainable logging in key forest regions
• Forests are home to over 20 million people, most of them belong to ethnic minority groups and they are the poorest of the poor.
Some Facts

• Habitats include tropical evergreen forests, wetlands that include mangroves, peat swamps, coral reefs and lagoons where there are species that live in salt water and freshwater. All of these contributes to Vietnam’s recognition for its rich biodiversity, which means the number and variety of native animals and plants within an environment.
• Forests in Vietnam contain 15,986 species of plants (10% endemic), 7,750 insects, 260 reptiles, 120 amphibians, 840 birds (100 endemic) and 310 mammals (78 endemic). All of which are threatened by widespread forest loss.

Conversion of forests into other land uses, especially agriculturally and aqua-culturally cultivated land;
Development of infrastructural facilities and construction of hydro-power plants;
High population growth, resettlement, migration and poverty ; Increasing market demand for timber products and fuel wood; Inappropriate forest management and harvesting methods (e.g.
excessive timber logging); Incomplete legal systems and lack of capacity to enforce the
laws;
Major driving forces behind the deforestation in Vietnam

Common types of forest-level illegalities • Artisanal (small-scale) logging • Logging of protected species • Logging outside of licensed areas and in protected areas, including logging in licensed areas where harvest is prohibited • Logging more than allowed volumes on authorized logging sites Other common illegalities • Illegal sawmilling

Effective exploitation, combined with forest resource protection and development
Strengthening current forest planting and protection Forest protection and development need to follow planning,
ensuring benefit balance between forest owners and state All activities threatening forest resource must be banned Government supports livelihood activities through
infrastructure development and land and forest allocation policies
What to do?

Homework• Research 3 endemic animals in
Vietnam.• Due: Wednesday 11 May
• For example: Tonkin snub-nosed monkey It is a black and white monkey with a pink nose and lips and blue patches round the eyes.It is believed there are fewer than 200 Tonkin snub-nosed monkeys left in the worldThe main long-term threat to the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey at Khau Ca is the limited area of the forest. Surveys have highlighted several potential threats to the species such as: illegal logging, hunting, exploitation of a range of non-timber forest products, shifting cultivation, fuel wood collection and grazing of livestock in the forest.
