GermàBel

Germà Bel has a Masters in Economics by the University of Chicago and a doctorate by the University of Barcelona, where he is a professor in Applied Economics. A Member of Parliament between 2000 and 2004, he was spokesman for the Economy and the Treasury for the Socialist Group from

2001 to the end of the legislative term. Between 2004 and 2006 he was a visiting professor at Cornell University and worked as a researcher at Harvard and later at the European University Institute in Florence.

A new updated and extended edition of the book that

questions the Radial Model in

Spain.

With Spain. Capital: Paris, first published

in 2010 and now extended, Germà

Bel has become an essential voice in the debate about the management of infrastructures

and transport policies.

English rights sold to The Alpha Press

Ltd.

In this book, Germá Bel analyses the factors that have been crucial in the process of the construction of the Radial State in Spain: the politico-administrative capital of Madrid and the radial system of transport and communications. These actions have been driven by administrative and political objectives, rather than economic dynamics, following a continuous and regular historical pattern since the 18th Century. This explains why the infrastructure policies in contemporary Spain are so distinct from the countries around it and why they are supported by such a wide consensus. This leads the author to conclude that “after over a decade of rigid infrastructure policy, it might be a good idea to just stop and think.”

Pablo Gallego & Fabio Gándara

Pablo Gallego and Fabio Gándara are two of the main activists who energised the social networks that mobilized thousands of people in May 2010 with peaceful occupations of plazas and centres of 60 Spanish cities.

The new book by the leaders

of 15-M is a call for optimism for

young Spanish people and

Europeans in general.

A book that sets out a project for the future arising from reflection, debate, socio-cultural practice and the politics of the main leaders of the 15-M and indignados movements. The work seeks to offer proposals for the future, based on the experience of the authors and those who have been active in the trenches of committed and conscientious indignation.

Alberto GarzónEspinosa

With this book, Alberto Garzón Espinosa, the author of Esto

tiene arreglo, once more becomes the

voice of popular indignation.

It is repeated ad nauseam that the economic crisis is a passing accident that can be solved with tough sacrifices done by workers, the unemployed, retired people and students. Like the ancient Mayas, governments across half the world are hoping that a ritual rain dance will do the trick. But there’s no sign that any of this will work. In fact, all the evidence points to the fact that we are victims of a lie and that the economic crisis is nothing more than a cover up for an immense theft.

StéphaneHessel

Stéphane Hessel was born in Berlin in 1917 but has lived in Paris since he was seven years old. In 1939 he was mobilized just after entering university. Two years later, he joined the Resistance and, in London, joined De Gaulle’s Free French army. Caught by the Gestapo in 1944, he

escaped certain death at Buchenwald after switching his identity with another prisoner. After the war he became a diplomat and worked with the United Nations. In 1948 he was part of the team that drew up the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1977 he was appointed as the French

Crisis is still the current

buzzword and the issue demands

thoughtful and respected

proposals: Hessel continues to be

an internationally respected and

renowned voice.

His last book Indignez-vous!

reached and moved millions of readers across the

world.

With the crisis at its most acute phase and with apparently no hope of a resolution any time soon, with the future of Europe, its currency and political institutions committed to a path that would seem to have no short or mid- term solutions, Stéphane Hessel reflects on the situation and offers his proposals to keep going on without succumbing to the doomsayers or simply accepting a future being written by the new Gods of the 21st Century: the financial markets and their political agents in government.

and International Immigration by the French government in 1998, he was a member of the European Parliament between 1999 and 2004. He currently writes for several newspapers: Le Monde and Libération in France and El Periódico de Cataluña and El País in Spain. He is the author of numerous books.

Is it the End of the European Dream?Deusto / 200 pages / September 2013

SamiNaïr

In this book Sami Naïr examines all the causes of our current situation, focussing on the barriers that prevent European progress, the ‘strong’ euro policy, the inherent contradictions of an optimal monetary zone, the Franco-German game, the responsibility of the elites of all the European countries for this failure, the absence of a vision for the future and the betrayal of the magnificent European dream by those who have confused it with economic liberalism and the conception of a hierarchical Europe restricted to mere mercantilism.

The new title by Sami Naïr, specialist

in migration and creator of the concept of co-development.

The indignados’ manifesto in 25

proposals.

Rights sold to Italy (Marco Tropea).

The Indignados peacefully

occupied the Spanish plazas and spread the movement to

other European and American

countries.

Who do the indignados blame for the crisis? What do they want? What is their strategy? Do they have a program? Will it change the course of Europe? Is this a worldwide citizens’ revolution? The indignados want another model for society and they know that it is possible. They have sent a message out from the plazas to the whole world: we want it all and we want it now. The result has been a chain reaction, an ethical revolution which blames all political parties equally. They are not protesting; they are making demands. And they have a political program which is full of ideas. They want real democracy for real citizens.

The subject of this book is not love, but the continuation of love, which is apparently one of the most difficult problems we humans face. Addressing issues such as misunderstandings, autonomy within a relationship, handling jealousy, the peculiarities of one’s character, and the basic beliefs of partners show that these are all of great importance in developing good communication between partners. At the end of the day, love is a conversation and good communication is vital.

Spain in the winter of 1939. Among the hundreds of thousands of people who crossed the border seeking refuge in France, the Lamana family becomes separated, hoping to meet up again in the neighbouring country. The testimony of José María, the father, is an immediate account of those months in 1939. Almost fifty years later, in 1985, his son Manuel discovers his father’s manuscript and writes a parallel diary of his own memories of that time.

Q UA R T I E R L AT I N

Archer se detiene un instante ante un enorme cuadro, Apotheosis of Henry IV and the Proclamation of the Regency, de Rubens.

title Relaciones. Cita en el sofá.

A day without smiling is a day wasted. Taking Charlie Chaplin’s maxim to heart, this book reminds us that a smile is the best weapon to combat difficulties in times of crisis. Small pleasures, the best kept secrets for relaxation in big cities and free activities to overcome boredom and anxiety are just some of the original proposals to be found in these pages. Readers sick of mind-numbing monotony will find a hundred suggestions to ensure that they’ll wake up each morning in a good mood. William Shakespeare was right: “It’s easier to get what you want with a smile than the tip of a sword.”

I am Josef Ajram Tares, I was born in Barcelona on the 5th of April 1978 to a Syrian father and Spanish mother. I like a few things very intensely including the stock market, sports and travel. The key to the secret of my fortune is knowing what I wanted to do from when I was very little and what I didn’t. I didn’t

like to study, so I stopped as soon as I could. I liked numbers and in the stock market I found a unique place where the numbers dance their own dance and I’ve been there for almost a decade. My other passion is sport, which I have played since I was young.

JosefAjram

I Don’t Know Where the Limit Is But I Know Where It Isn’t is Josef Ajram’s most personal book to date. In it he uses his own anecdotes and experiences to demonstrate the keys to outdoing yourself every day, explaining his idea of failure and success and conception of effort, amongst other subjects. Life, says Ajram, is short, “so instead of complaining you’d do better to get back up and try again with renewed effort.”

Risto Mejide is a great Spanish

marketing guru.

In ANNOYOMICS Risto Mejide presents a biting, ironic analysis of successful annoying case studies as well as a practical manual to getting the most out the quirks, tics and defects that most annoy other people, transforming them into our primary source of income. This is an ode to the creation of premeditated discord to earn money, a formal invitation to swell the number of your enemies so that they will do your bidding. And above all it’s a one way ticket because once you’ve begun you’ll never see the world in the same way again.

The contemporary world is full of paradoxes which can be mostly summarized by the phrase that it’s a world of everybody and nobody. Issues that affect everyone but for which no-one wants to or can take responsibility proliferate. In a world in which the economy to a great measure ignores international boundaries and interdependency makes our common vulnerability more acute, the only solution is to progress towards the de-nationalization of justice and global governance.

The new challenges for

ethics (capitalism, Internet privacy, copyright issues)

presented via a series of questions

students have asked Fernando.

Fernando Savater is a Professor of Philosophy at the Universidad Com-plutense de Madrid. He is the author of numerous philosophical, literary and political essays as well as books and plays. Some of his books have been translated into over twenty languages. His works Ética para

Amador, Politica para Amador and Las preguntas de la vida have managed to bring philosophy closer to young people and have become real bestsellers.

How can we find out how young people think? By asking them. This apparently simple answer conceals a great difficulty: you have to know how to ask. You have to know how to put yourself in the shoes of young people, to win their confidence; to listen but also to give advice, offer opinions and take positions... Fernando Savater held a series of meetings with young students and answered the questions they put to him. This book represents Fernando Savater’s newest contribution to his dialogue with young people about the moral issues that worry them the most.

How can we improve our charisma? How can we make the best impression at a work interview? What is the most empathetic way to greet someone? How important are hugs to our relationships with other people? Why do we behave in one way and not in another, even though we know we’re getting it wrong? In this book, Elsa Punset provides an essential guide to understanding why we are the way we are, why we act the way we do and what we should know to better organize our emotional universe. Punset has taken emotions out of the academic field, saved them from cold dissection and delivered them into people’s hands, to real life.
