and to experience the Land of the Bible. is a monumental experience. It is also an unparalleled fellowship opportunity- a journey that can begin well in

advance of the trip with lessons focused on the biblical importance of going to Israel. Thus. making the bible com.~ to life. I

Israel: the planning process 10 tried-and-true tips for faith-based travelers

If you want to ensure your Israel trip is as transformative as it can be (and so often is), it pays to plan well. To that end, keep these 10 travel trips in mind, as gathered from many faith-based travelers before you.

Bos. sert's first trip. to .Israel came in 2014, as a journ. al.ist and guest of IMOT. She spent IO days in-counlry. 'fl:iough Bossert had worked as a writer and syndicated columnist for a decade, that trip was the

Today, she ha? the opportunity to travel to Israel once or twic~ a year. It's an excellent benefit because, as Bossert explains, "Israel has become my ultimate destination."

Fears - and facts

For many people, flying itself is scary. Bossert knows this fear firsthand. "I fk•w to England in ·my 20's - and I didn't fly again until probably four years ago [at age 50]," s_he s;ys. ~Now, I fly so much th.at it's like catching the bus or getting on Amtrak. Ifs easy, and I don't worry a'tmut it.0

Then, of course, there are th_e fears ass9ciated with flying to Israe_l, specifically. To that end, Bossert says El Al Airline is extremely secure, with the top-notch security measures in place.

Even for domestic flights, travelers undergo security screening at airports iri. Israel. ~It's eXtensiVe in that you'll be asked questions about

where you're going, who you're traveling with, and where you11 be staying," she e_xplai_ns. "Then, when you ka_ve the country, [they'll ask]

where you stayed, who y'ou traveled with, and what your ptirpose Was for

being [in Israel]." While this might soun_d i_ntimidating, Bossert points out th_at the

screeners are very polite. "They just let travelers know that they simply must be vigilant and take Security Very s·erioUsly.~

Additionally, faith-based travelers are familiar territory for security pe_rsonnel, as Bos_se_rt points out. ~When you say, Tm traveling with a group;

it's faith-based; we're going to some of the holy Sites,' there's a pretty standard

When you arrive at your hotel, you might be asked for your passport. And, th_ough you might not see the vigilant security personnel, they're very likely nearby. MThat's what they do," Bossert says. "They may not have a gun where you can see it, but they're ensuring your security.N

Of course, armed military personnel aren't :a familiar sight for most Americans. To this end, Bossert rec·alls one tbur group who, on their travels, noticed Israeli defense forces carryin~ guns. Mlt ma_de them a little nervous," she admits. ~But I said, 'Doesn'f.it also give you a sense of security? B'ecause they're here to protect you." 1

Holy s_ites, in particula_r, are rife with secufity measures. Visitors to the Western Wall, for example, are likely to bben:t from bag-scanning.

' "So. T Would highly recommend visiting there!'. Bossert says. ~It's such a wonderful opportuni_ty to pray. It's one of the pl~ces that wciuld have been there at the time of Christ. It's just part of the landscape."

This vigilant and experienced approach to ~ecurity has made Israel a very saJe travel dest_ination. "They've just learried through the years how to implement [security rneas'"iltes]," Bossert say~. "Mea'nwhile, some of the soft targets in Europe are becoming more and more dangerous because they haven't done the same. Israel is really a~ead of the curve when it comes to security.

It's [a feeling] like that, but it's that way all the tim_e [in the Holy Land]. It's like entering into your prayer space; it stays like that

the entire time you're there." Indeed, a visit to Israel is a once-in-a-lifetin.ie opportunity towalkwhere

Christ walked and where the Bible comes to life. Among Bossert's favorite sites are Mount Carme_l, Nazareth and Cana

in Galilee, and the Sea of Galilee. "Everyone on the ~ea of Galilee has a moment of grate," she says. "It's fantastic."

But, person~! moments of grace also happen everywhere else in lsrael. "ll can't be predicted, but everyone has their own personal moment of grac;e in a certain place," she adds .

It might be at MoUTlt Tabor, where the transfiguration Occurred. From there, your group might visit Caesarea Philippi (Bani_a_s), which i_s fu_rther !')Orth, not far from the Golan Heights. Then, you might drop down to

Jerusalem and go to the Old Cit)', the Mollnt of Olives, and the Garden, too. After this, you might divert from the usual faith travel journey to

visit Masada - more of a Jewish historical site, but highly recommended because ~it really harkens to the Psalms and being in high places,"

according to Bossert "As Christians, we talk about 'mountaintop experi~nc.es,"' she adds,

t_ravelers-.are important factors in the decision. To that end, B_ossert says, ~I've never once heard someone corile back [from 'Israel] and say, 'Oh, that was kind of sca_ry.' Never."

What she has heard: It was the experience of a lifetime. T'm so glad l went when l was in my 30's I 40'.s. Now, I have a lifetime

of reading the Bible and immediately being able to Jfel my spirit back there in

Israel. I can kn_ow ju_st wha_t i_t's like; I can truly enviSion it.

But don't just take th_eir word for it. Before you decide, Bussert has some unfa_i_ling advice: pray. 1
