FORCES AND STRUCTURES
Force - the influence that tends to change the speed and direction of a stationary or a moving body.
FORCES AND STRUCTURESThe effect of a force depends upon its:
MAGNITUDE Measure of how strong a force is Newtons (N)
DIRECTION Ex. Push vs Pull
POINT & PLANE of Application Where and how a force is applied Ex. High vs Low
TENSION, COMPRESSION,
TORSION AND SHEAR
TENSION – pulling or stretching force
COMPRESSION- pushing or squeezing force
TENSION
COMPRESSION
TORSION – twisting force – applying opposite rotational forces
SHEAR- two parallel opposite forces applied at same point- causes tearing
Draw and label a diagram showing the forces acting on and within a flagpole and its flag in a strong wind.
Strut - A member of structure that is subjected to compression.
Tie - A member of structure that is subjected to tension.
