Theresa Burke, PhD, LPC, NCP is the founder of Rachel’s Vineyard Ministries and the author of The Rachel’s Vineyard Weekend Retreat Manuals and support group models. Theresa is an internationally recognized expert on post-abortion trauma and healing. Her other books include: Forbidden Grief -

The Unspoken Pain of Abortion with David Reardon (Acorn Books), The Contraception of Grief and most recently Grief to Grace - Reclaiming the Gift of Sexual Dignity, a new retreat model for those who have been sexually abused. Theresa’s counseling work has focused on women’s issues, bereavement, pregnancy loss, sexual abuse, eating disorders and anxiety management. She is the founder of Covenant Family Resources, a licensed Children and Youth Agency. Theresa is a Nationally Certified Psychologist, a Certified Diplomat of the American Psychotherapy Association, a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Counselors.

Kevin Burke, MSS, LSW serves as Associate Director of Rachel’s Vineyard Ministries and as the Coordinator for Men’s Outreach. Kevin has published numerous articles on the effects of abortion on men, couples and families. He is co-author of Redeeming A Father’s Heart and Grief to Grace. He is a

graduate of Bryn Mawr College’s Graduate School of Social Sciences. Kevin formerly served as the administrator of Mother’s Home, a crisis pregnancy residence, which provides housing, computer job training and programs for women in crisis pregnancy and their children. Kevin also spent eight years as a social work clinical supervisor for Catholic Social Services in Philadelphia. Kevin and Theresa have worked together in marriage and family counseling and established Covenant Family Resources, a licensed Children and Youth Agency which supports couples as they build families through adoption. Kevin and Theresa are the proud parents of five children.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:

• Outline the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder as they relate to voluntary pregnancy termination.

• Understand how pregnancy loss may be a contributing or causative factor in depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders, marriage and family problems, or other problems that may bring women to professional counseling.

• Explore how the brain works and what we know about how a brain malfunctions when there has been emotional psychic trauma.

• Understand why the mental health community frequently fails to recognize post-abortion emotional distress and provide appropriate treatment.

• Promote awareness of some of the grief issues, in men as well as women, following pregnancy termination, in order to provide hope and healing
