Re-boot Forbes has been operating without a Finance Committee for some time. The idea of not having a Finance Committee was most members of the Finance Committee were also members of the Administration Council. At the time, there seemed to be a waste of volunteer’s time and energy. What we have found was that the Administrative Council did not have enough time to have thoughtful and concentrated financial discussions. To focus on Forbes’ financial responsibilities and the Administrative Council this month re-established (re-booted) the Finance committee and they have begun to meet. Their major focus for the re-boot will be improved communications with congregational members and to address the budget shortfalls.

Your Adoption is Complete Congratulations on your successful adoption of two sections of roadway in Proctor. Each spring and fall church members tackle roadside clean up (or adoption) on parts of St. Louis River Road and Second Avenue. On September 28th, 13 members tackled roadside cleanup of the road-ways and were very successful. Our adoption team this fall included: Flo Bonkowske, Carol Lonke, Kaylee Knight, Daulton Knight, Emma Bobbitt, Mary Knight, Pat Pirnie, jack Baker, Troy Bobbitt, Walt and Roberta Kephart, and Chuck and Donna Froseth. Thanks to all who participated and to all who gave us support.

The Proctor Food Shelf thanks Forbes for their continued support. In September, 194 pounds of food was donated. Thank you! Food shelf items needed include: flour, sugar, pastas, spaghetti sauce, boxed dinners, stuffing mixes, cereal, canned fruits and vegetables, cake mixes, and shampoo and conditioner

What is this? You may have noticed a white board near the entry way into the narthex. This is just another means of communi-cation with church members. Currently we communicate with members using the Sunday bulletin, the Messenger, Facebook, our website, direct email to members, post office mailings, flyers on the bulletin boards, face to face con-tact and announcement at Sunday Ser-vice. The idea of the white board is to post upcoming meetings, church events and update on what happened the previous week. Please do not use the white board for things like birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and other personal items. If you have an appropriate item, please add it. If and item is out of date, please erase it. Let’s give it a try and see how it works.

Water Filter Project Judy Ziegler What an amazing and humbling experience it was to go to Kenya and help with the distribution of the water filters that our church purchased! Altogether, between Missions, UMW, circles, and individuals we raised almost $1,000! Between the ones we provided, and others donated to SPIN (Serving People In Need) we were able to take 110 filters with us to Kenya. We arrived in the village of Eburro to find a line of people waiting for us, and three small boys, who appointed themselves the Welcoming committee, front and center. (These three curious little guys were everywhere we turned, including climbing into the Land Cruiser with Hart at one point) Sue met with Father Francis (a native Kenyan who spent 15 years in the Duluth, Hibbing, and Cross Lake areas) and the village elders to explain how we were going to proceed. The other four of us; Marcia Senerau, Michael Bussa, Hart, and I were a little appre-hensive of what was to come, but also excited. Sue has done this before and has it down pat. First she gave a demonstration to the whole village. Then we went to our stations. Hart manned the label station. Every bucket has to have a label so we know there will be a filter for it. We did-n’t want to drill a hole in a bucket and find out there weren’t enough filters. That would be very wasteful. The villagers had to provide their own 5 gallon plastic bucket ( about $2.50) which for many of them is a real financial stretch. This gives them ownership in the project. Michael manned the drilling station. Marcia and I showed the villagers how to put the filters together and put one on each bucket. Swahili is the first language in Kenya, but most people also speak some English. We had translators who helped those who didn’t speak English well enough, and of course they helped each other too. Sue did the important job of teaching each of them how to clean the filter. As long as they are kept clean the filters should last indefinitely, and provide clean water for cooking and drinking. We worked with a person from each family individually. As I worked my “teacher mode” kicked in and I kept apologizing and telling them I was used to teaching children, not adults. They had a good sense of humor and laughed with me. (But darn it, I wanted to be sure they under-stood each step and what we were doing so I was very specific.) The villagers were excited, and anxious to learn. It went so smoothly that I couldn’t believe it when we finished… I kept look-ing around for another suitcase of filters! It was an amazing feel-ing to look around and realize that we, through your generosity, and the generosity of others, were able to provide safe, clean water for the whole village! We had given out 103 filters. That left us with 7 filters. We gave those to our driver, Hesborn. Sue had worked with Hesborn, and given him a filter on her last trip. He had given that filter to his parents, and their whole village was using that one filter! Their village is small, too. It’s also has about 100 families. Hmmmmm…. there was some whispering among our group. Maybe that should be the next village SPIN visits? We, all of us, are so fortunate. It’s easy, and I know I am guilty of it, to take things for granted and assume they are our due. Clean water, electricity, cars, a solid roof over our heads are things we just assume will be there for us. It was quite an experience to be in a country where this just isn’t true for a majority of the popula-tion. I thank God for an opportunity to experience something so different from my norm.

Forbes United Methodist Church 33 Grove St. Proctor, MN 55810

Our vision is to be an open, trusting, accepting community for all ages where God’s Spirit and a Christ-like attitude invite us to risk, try new things,

and grow in love and compassion.
